Hi all,
We have finished programming the Second 2011 Editor Survey in 15 languages, with the Japanese programming still in-progress. Once again, thanks for your help with all the translations.
Re: Japanese, there was an internal mix-up, due to which a Japanese translation request was not setup on the Meta hub. To meet our deadline to launch the survey this Thursday, we had to hire a professional translator at the last minute. We will be sharing the translation on this thread as soon as it is ready, and would like the Japanese community to provide feedback on the translated survey.
Please help us test the translations:

We plan to take the survey live on all language Wikipedias tomorrow, with the exception of the English Wikipedia, which will launch on Monday. This is in order to accomodate a Harvard research study that will go live in the next day.
Please let us know if everything looks fine.
Side-note: [1]The Chinese (Traditional) banner for the survey needs a minor update, should only take a few seconds - http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_Editors_Survey_November_20...
Thanks a lot for your help. In case there are any questions/concerns, please contact me.

This is not related to the translation, but usability-wise the survey is surprisingly bad (no backward navigation, languages ordered by ISO code, pointless ordering controls for multiselect, no language/country guessing at all, broken progress bar etc). Is this the final interface?

Translation-related issues: - error messages are in English and sometime clearly wrong (e.g. on the page where one has to select 3 options, th error message says "selet two choices"). - Q35b seems to be missing at least in the Hungarian translation; instead Q35c seems to be duplicated.
Tisza, thanks for your diligence.
Could you provide me with the correct translation for Q35b: "On a 0-10 scale with 0 being NOT AT ALL GOOD and 10 being EXTREMELY GOOD, how would you rate the performance of Wikimedia volunteers overall, in contributing to the Wikimedia movement?"
Thanks.

Hi Ayush,
according to http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_Editors_Survey_November_20... Q35b should be translated as "0-10-es skálán (0: EGYÁLTALÁN NEM JÓ, 10: RENDKÍVÜL JÓ) hogyan értékelnéd a többi önkéntes közreműködését a Wikimédia mozgalomban?" and that is a good translation (I guess it was left out by mistake and not because the translation was missing).

Hello everyone,
Thanks a lot for the feedback. We have included all the translation-related changes for most of the languages. The survey is now live on the Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese Traditional. English will launch on Monday, as I mentioned earlier.
For Catalan, Serbo-Croatian, Japanese and Croatian, we will go live early next week, so that we have enough time to incorporate changes. I will share updated versions of these as soon as they are ready.
Thanks.

Can you mark translations as published on the template when they are, please?
Also, some questions are hard to translate because they're unclear; there are several unanswered questions about it (and other things) since the previous edition. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research_talk:Wikipedia_Editors_Survey_November_2011#Unanswered_questions_about_previous_survey

Hi Ayush and Mani,
I appreciate your decision to give the time for further improvements. I will be working on proofreading/improving the Japanese translation and spreading the word to other translators.

It seems there is a problem on the french survey. In the section about competences, I see the "Sur une échelle de 0 à 10 avec 0 pour PAS BONNES DU TOUT et 10 pour EXTRÊMEMENT BONNES, comment évalueriez-vous vos propres performances pour contribuer au mouvement Wikimedia ?" question two times. Has a question not been translated correctly (copy/past) or does the second question not exist at all?
There are alors some sentences which does not sound like fluent french, but there is a big mistake on the survey homepage. The last sentence "Si vous avez toutes questions au sujet de cette enquête ou des préoccupations au sujet de la confidentialité, soyez libre de bien vouloir contacter l’équipe en charge de conduire cette enquête : survey@wikimedia.org" must be something like "Si vous avez des questions à propos de cette enquête ou des préoccupations au sujet de la confidentialité, n'hésitez pas à contacter l’équipe en charge de la conduite de cette enquête : survey@wikimedia.org".
Thanks!

Vincent: Thank you for pointing this out. I'll go ahead and make the changes rightaway. If you have a moment, you can take a look at the meta page for the French translation: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_Editors_Survey_November_20...
Amir: Since the translations have already been marked as ready and moved over, I have no way of knowing changes were made to the meta page. A notification would have been helpful. I'll look at your changes and implement them now.
Nemo: I haven't changed the status yet, in order to accomodate any last minute tweaks that might be needed. I do plan to change the status to "published" for the languages that are currently live by the end of the day. Also. I will follow up with you (on-wiki) about the questions you have in a few days.
Thanks.

That's where the confusion lies then. Translations on Meta are usually marked as "ready" *before* publishing and after publishing they are marked as "published".
It would be even better to use the Translate extension for this, but that's a subject for a separate email.

Edit and change it if you want. There's no problem to improve the translation. But don't say it was not made by a non-fluent. You should have looked at the history and would have seen all the translations I did on Meta or elsewhere. I'm French, live in France, French is my native language, and I made that carefully, even though there is no "BIG MISTAKE", that's only a question of style.

I didn't intend to offense you and the other translators at all, you did a huge work in translating the whole survey; it's always easier to proofread than to translate. In addition I'm conscient you were a native french speaker.
I've slightly improved the introduction screen in order to make it more readable, somes sentences were (from my point of view) not very natural, that's what I was trying to say. Well, I'm not very subtle in english, but I respect all the work done by contributors and especially translators.

I guess it was left out by mistake and not because the translation was missing
It was left out because of a missing newline I fixed later [1]; probably whatever software was used could not parse the options that way. (It might be a good idea to notify the translators in the case of automatically detectable errors. If you use the Translate extension (which, as Amir already noted, is very well suited for translating interfaces which can be broken down into short pieces of text, some of which can be reused), it has real-time syntax checking capabilities, maybe that could be used to see if you have the correct number of options. Of course, if you used Translate, every option could be a separate message, eliminating the possibility of error altogether. )

I would like to second Tisza's opinions below. If you have time to fix nothing else, please fix at least the progress bar: that it is showing around 50% completion on the first page where one arrives looks quite unprofessional. An unprofessional look again may stop people from responding (which is why it would be great if also the other usability issues were addressed, at least for the next survey).
There was one language / logic mistake in the English version: the question about why one created an account had as one alternative "...wanted to create A new articleS"
Best of luck with the last tweaks!

This is not related to the translation, but usability-wise the survey is surprisingly bad (no backward navigation, languages ordered by ISO code, pointless ordering controls for multiselect, no language/country guessing at all, broken progress bar etc). Is this the final interface?

Unfortunately this Japanese translation looks very bad, containing grammatical errors and unusual expressions that require time for Japanese speakers to understand. If you are going to use as it is, I would guess that this would hurt participation to the survey, as well as the quality of the answers.
If there is any raw material of this translation available, I would like to help improving it. Best, Yusuke Matsubara On Thu, Dec 8, 2011 at 12:42 PM, Ayush Khanna akhanna@wikimedia.org wrote:

Thanks everyone, We'll make some of the changes suggested by you.
Amir, you are right, all the links take you to English, Ayush will fix it. Based on the feedback from everyone, we have made all the questions optional so editors can skip questions that are not valid like WikiLove, and another good thing to remember is that most editors edit English Wikipedia so even if their primary Wikipedia is Hebrew they might have come across Wikilove on English. But I would still look into deleting the question for Hebrew.
Benjamin, thanks for the modification to Chinese translation, we'll make the changes.
Surya, unfortunately, we are launching the survey today so we can't run the survey in Tamil. The programming of the survey takes a few hours.

Will there be an instruction somewhere telling editors that they can skip questions? Otherwise, making them optional doesn't do a lot of good, and I'm afraid it biases the results towards those who are technically proficient enough to bumble around and figure that out. pb ___________________ Philippe Beaudette Head of Reader Relations Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.

We plan to take the survey live on all language Wikipedias tomorrow,
with
the exception of the English Wikipedia, which will launch on Monday.
This is
in order to accomodate a Harvard research study that will go live in
the
next day.
Please let us know if everything looks fine.
Side-note: [1]The Chinese (Traditional) banner for the survey needs a minor
update,
should only take a few seconds

(de) WikiLove is missspelled. Language selection is awkward. Progress meter is always on the same value. I was told to say something to experiences that i have never said that i have had them. (de) Helfern is spelled wrongly Helfers. “Wie bewertest du auf einer Skala von 0 bis 10 (0 überhaupt nicht gut, 10 sehr gut) deine eigene Leistung in der Wikimedia-Bewegung?” is there two times.
I have found several issues with the Catalan translation, starting with the fact that it does not appear in the selectable menu for languages so I needed to copypaste the corresponding URL. However the most important one is that I have not been able to finish it, as it keeps telling me to have only two answers in Q17 no matter how many of them I check. The other issues I have found before getting to that point are the following ones: Question Q2b is not the one in the meta translation page but a nonsense sentence. Q4b-e should have a field to fill that does not seem to work. The possible answers for Q8c and Q8d are not translated. The text of Q19 was shown but with no possible answers. SMP

Hi all,
We have finished programming the Second 2011 Editor Survey in 15 languages, with the Japanese programming still in-progress.
