Hello, all
a translation drive seems to have come ;)
WMF website
need to update
- [[Board of Trustees]] translations (esm fr it, ja, nl, zh)
- [[Wikimedia bylaws]] translations (de, fr, it)
- [[Template:News-xx]]
Also there is a press release. You may translate and disseminate it to
your local press.
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Press_releases/Wikimedia_Foundation_boa…
Sorry, I have now no time to reorganize TR. Could someone care for it?
In my opinion this series of translations is worthy to be ranked #1 on
Current requests (Template:Translation requests/curreqs).
I will be absent almost in the next week. Sabine Cretella and other
experienced translation coordinators will answer your questions
expectedly.
Your translation of the forwarded message into your community will be
great, too.
See you at the next week meeting hopefully,

Subject: [Foundation-l] Board officers elected; Anthere is Chair!
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)wikimedia.org>
I have been asked to announce this in my new formal officer role as
Executive Secretary:
The Wikimedia Board met in Frankfurt, Germany on October 22,
immediately following a planning retreat attended by the Board and
more than 20 members of the Wikimedia community. The Board voted
unanimously to elect Florence Devouard as the Chair of the Board, Tim
Shell as Vice-Chair, Erik Möller as Executive Secretary, and Michael
Davis as Treasurer. Jimmy Wales assumes the title of Chairman
Emeritus of the Foundation.
Jimmy Wales said: "I nominated Florence to be the chair of the
foundation in recognition of her outstanding service for the past few
years and her unsurpassed passion for our goals. Having such a
trusted community representative elected as our new chair demonstrates
the growth and strength of our organization."
- - - -
For reference, the resolution:
The Board resolved that, from the 21 of October and for a term of one
year at most, as defined in the bylaws:
Motion by Jimmy Wales, following discussion, the Board consensus
resulted in the following officers:
1. Florence Devouard shall be the chair of the board of trustees
2. Tim Shell shall be the vice-chair
3. Michael Davis shall be the treasurer
4. Erik Moeller shall be the executive secretary
Jimmy Wales shall assume the title of Chairman Emeritus of the Foundation.
Approved unanimously at the board meeting - 21 october 2006

Hello Kizu,
I've translated the Foundation office staff text, but have trouble with substituting the English text with the Hungarian.
I don't want to mess up the photos, so well arranged, but I am not yet too familiar with the switches used in the programming.
During my effort to put all the translation into the appropriate page WP has also forgotten my password and refused to enter me, so when I was trying to sign the translation, unfinished, as it was, the whole lot has disappeared from sight, so I'll have to try later, this evening perhaps. Thank you for your other mail, not yet read, as I've got to leave the house now, goiung shopping;

Hello again, Sabine,
Thanks again for the explications.
I have now extracted the zip files, I looked at all the OmegaT files, browsed through the instruction manual.
I understand that extracting the spell and grammar checker in the target language would be highly adevisable (and I take it that these I'll find on my system disk.)
There are two things not yet clear (at the moment)
1. How do I start up OmegaT, and
2. How do I start, ie import a textfile (.doc file in MS word) into the OmegaT environment.
Kind regards, Louis

That is strange ... well you can also download it from my server where I
have a copy of RC10 for Windows including Java.
http://wordsandmore.org/Downloads/omtrc10java.zip
> 2. When I tried to download the programme without Java I received

OmegaT does not install Java itself - only the bundel-version coms with
the bits and pieces of Java. By clicking on OmegaT.bat in the subfolder
you start the program without installing it on your computer: so no
entries in the registry and no problems when there is an update, since
you don't need to install it. OmegaT, as much as I remember, has no
localisation in Hungarian for now - so it would load with English as
default.
> When I looked for Java on my computer, to my surprise I could not find it
Well normally that should be installed separately if you use the version
without Java. You can get it from here:
http://java.com
(sorry for some reason I cannot force the website to show up in English
... my System is in German so I suppose it automatically reads that info).
> Oh, one more q: do I just type the address of the chatline on my
> address line to get to it ?
Well you need, for example Chatzilla installed if you use Firefox as
browser - or other chat software. If you don't want to install this you
can also go through various web interfaces:
* http://www.bitshuffle.org/cgiirc/
* http://java.freenode.net/index.php
* http://brujula5.brujula.net/cgi-bin/cgi/irc.cgi
If you have problems in using these, please let me know which one you
are trying to use so I can help with descriptions.
Off to bed :-) Good night!

Hi Louis,
> 1. Is this program applicable to translating into Hungarian ?
Yes
> 2. Does it have signifcant advantages ?
It depends from the articles you translate and if you also translate
updates.
- If you translate similar articles where sentences are very similar or
the same, you will find them translated. One example where I often
use/used it (I don't have much time lately) is the translation of the
Calendar pages. With some special segmentation rules (they are easy to
set - I can help you there) you will find quite a good amount of text
translated the more you do. Example: there are so many presidents of the
United States, so many Italian painters, so many German writers, so many
... so if you have the entry "[[Name of the person]], German writer "
you will find German writer automatically translated.
- If you translate a page and in a second moment you want to update the
text with the re-elaborated one from another project you simply use the
translation memory created with the first version. So all changes show
up and all that remains equal will become automatically translated or
the potential translation will be proposed by th software. So you save a
lot of time by not having to compare the text manually.
> 3. Is it too complicated ?
That depends on what you understand with complicated. Normally after a
first page you know the basics and then, according to what you want/need
to translate you learn the specific options. It is not more complicated
like any other new software. Some people just took the software and
started with a file and did not even have questions, other people that
are worrying a bit more about how to do things before they actually do
them - these are normally the people that need a bit more time.
I wrote an how to for Persian - and that is valid also for any other
language:
http://wordsandmore.org/index.php?title=Wordsandmore:Persian_wikipedia_cont…
You can find me in several chat-rooms - just giving two of them:
irc://irc.freenode.net/wikimedia-translationirc://irc.freenode.net/wiktionaryz
Btw. there is a WikiRead/WikiWrite feature being programmed - for now we
don't have an exact time scale when it is ready, but I will let you know
sending an e-mail to the list.
If you have further questions: just contact me by mail, chat or skype
(sabinecretella)
Have a great evening!

Hi, sorry again for one of those unpersonal mails. And sorry for some
typos - I am not re-reading the mail and my "r"-key still creates problems.
I will crosspost this mail to several mailing lists that could be
interested as well, so you won't see the single recipients.
From your answers I noted that being in different time zones and having
different requirements we probably will not make it to do a real
OmegaT-course online - some also don't have Skype. So I will be online
for sure tomorrow morning from 07:00-09:00 UTC and on Thursday from
07:00-09:00 UTC (corresponds to 09:00-11:00 Italian time). I very likely
will not be here on Friday morning.
Anyway I am online normally every morning in the mentioned hours as well
as in the evening. I'll try to create a schedule I update on a daily
basis so that you can see when you can find me.
Therefore we will do it in a Q&A style in IRC on
irc://irc.freenode.net/wikimedia-translation
I chose the #wikimedia-translation channel, because it is about
translating Wikipedia articles. The how-to material will be online by
tomorrow morning - so I'll give you the link to the various pages during
the Q&A.
Don't panic if you cannot be online tomorow morning for this: since the
poject will last for some time you will find me online for questions
whenever I am at the computer - and that is quite many hours of the day.
Download OmegaT:
Version 1.6 RC10 - including Java for Windows:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/omegat/OmegaT_and_JRE_Win_1.6.0_RC10.zip…
(you don't need to care about the installation of Java on your
computer or about updating it)
Version 1.6 RC10 - including Java for Linux:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/omegat/OmegaT_and_JRE_Lin_1.6.0_RC10.tar…
(you don't need to care about the installation of Java on your
computer or about updating it)
Version 1.6 RC10 without Java:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/omegat/OmegaT_1.6.0_RC10.zip?download
(here you need to have an updated Java version on your computer -
this works both for Windows and for Linux and OSX)
Most of the people adhering to this project will use Windows - so I am
going to work with only Windows during the next days.
Access to the Chat-channel: you can do this in various ways. If you
already have a chat-software installed (for example Chatzilla for
firefox) you simply connect to the channel like you do with othe channels.
If you don't have such software and would like to avoid doing tests here
and there now: there is also a web interface where you can access to the
channel - I tested it with Firefox and Internet Explorer - both work fine.
Go to the URL:
http://www.bitshuffle.org/cgiirc/
As for "Nickname: " choose a name for youself and overwrite the contents
of the box
As for "Server:" please subsitute the contents with: irc.freenode.net
As for "Channel:" please substitute the contents with:
#wikimedia-translation
Then click on login. It can take a minute or so to really access the
channel.
Now to the sample text we will use:
Please go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OmegaT
Click on edit
Select the whole of the contents
copy it (ctrl+c)
and paste it in an empty .txt file - save the file with UTF-8 (the
windows editor is great for doing that)
From there: we will see from tomorrow on in the chat.
The how to's will be online here:
http://wordsandmore.org/index.php?title=Wordsandmore:Persian_wikipedia_cont…
Actually there is the WikiRead-WikiWrite feature for OmegaT being
programmed - so as soon as we have this it will be introduced. For now
most files will reach you as .txt files (even if this means more
organisational work). The way of doing things like above would be the
actual way to go, but I don't want people, who are new to wiki and
OmegaT to learn too many things at once - it could create more poblems
than doing good.
During the next days the texts to be tanslated will be prepared and I
will start to distribute them among the included translators. You will
see a schedule for each involved translator online so that you also will
be able to see from there who is going to do what and when. The links
will be added to the project page where you also find the how to's.
The Chat-logs will be made available as well through the main project page.
What else: I suppose not much more right now. Well if you feel this can
be interesting for other people: just tell them :-)
Meet you in the chat then :-)
Cheers,
Sabine

Hello all,
as consequence of with a recent discussion on Communications Committee
mailinglist (archive is closed), we are going to have a new guideline
about the Foundation website maintenance.
http://wikimediafoundation.org/
That is, if we find a translation page too much outdated *and* there
is no volunteering translator around, we will turn it into the
redirect to the originals, possibly to the English version.
Current candidates are:
* most of Korean pages (not updated since 2004) except Home page, including
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/%EC%9C%84%ED%82%A4%EB%AF%B8%EB%94%94%EC…
* most of Finnish pages except Home page, including
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Tietoja_Wikimediasta
* some German pages including
** Kuratorium (De version of Board of Trustees)
** Benefactors/De
See the website and consider if you would like to help updating.
After a long consideration, we reached that conclusion would be the
best for now. Since we think it would be better to lead the visitors
to the latest content even in a foreign language than to offer them
totally outdated pages (and mislead them). Transcom will continue to
seek translators for those pages, of course, but it is not sure
whenever translations of particular langauges will be available.
Therefore we are going to remove outdated materials. Anyone who would
like to revive those once existant page(s) will be welcome, and they
can restart those pages on meta ([[m:TR/WMF]] subpages).
Cheers,

Subject: [Foundation-l] UMP Convention
To: foundation-l(a)wikimedia.org
Hello,
A very short word to say that yesterday I attended a convention in
Paris, organised by the UMP
(http://www.u-m-p-paris.org/article.php3?id_article=454).
UMP is the first (as far as I know) political party in France, leader
being Mr Sarkozy, current minister of interior in France and a leading
candidate for the future presidential elections.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarkozy
The convention was focused on education and research
(http://www.u-m-p-paris.org/article.php3?id_article=454) I was speaking
in a panel along with french internet entrepreneurs, the idea of the
panel not being to "inform" people, but rather to tell them about what
we were expecting/hoping from this party (and likely, ahum, well,
possibly, from the next government...).
After a short introduction to Wikipedia, with proper figures ("4,4
millions of french electors are visiting Wikipedia every month" - I
could see every one bending to write down the scary fact that 1/10
french electors was a Wikipedia user), I insisted on two facts.
First is the DADVSI law (which was supported by UMP - making them the
real bad guys for free software supporters) - please see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DADVSI with this relevant bit
"The law was highly controversial within France for it could
significantly hamper free software, and also may significantly restrict
the right to make copies of copyrighted works for private use.
Second was to talk about the fact USA releases information in Public
Domain, versus our government (and more generally the EU, or most public
organisations) under classical cp. I mentionned as examples
* most pictures of french politicians on wp being from the US
governement (not the french gvt)
* Spatial research images from the NASA rather than ESA
* Etc
The whole convention was *extremely* interesting (which actually amazed
me, because it is rather unusual to attend a convention and be
interested all along). I was in particular amazed at how understandable
people were (very little political talk), how specific and how ready to
state what was not working. It was very refreshing...
In terms of audience, well, I'd say a quite decent part of it was
parliament members and current or ancient ministers. Others being
typically presidents of universities etc... In short, powerful people.
I was very glad to finally meet Loic Lemeur, probably the famous blogger
in France, and who I read occasionnally but never had the opportunity to
meet. Also the creator of several internet success.
I was invited to later talk privately to the person in charge of ict et
al from the office of Mr Sarkozy. I'll try to take care of that in november.
Guys, I hope you all feel the power of what we are building. This is HUGE.
Ant
