Hello all,
For preparing the coming Election, we have to update two MediaWiki
messages, advised Tim Staring.
"Tim Starling" <t.starling(a)physics.unimelb.edu.au> writes:

You are not qualified to vote in this election. You need to have made
$3 edits before $2, you have made $1. Also, your first edit was at $4,
it needs to be before $5.
> boardvote_notloggedin:
You are not logged in. To vote, you must use an account with at least
$1 contributions before $2, and with a first edit before $3.
(hmmm, that's a new element ...)
Those changes could be done automatically by MediaWiki default, or
not. Anyway, it would be nice to prepare translations of those
messages in my opinion.
Other MediaWiki:Boardvote_* files have not to be changed.
You can see those messages on meta too:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Election_UI_text_2006
If you feel at ease, you can work on that page.
Cheers,

Hello all,
thank you for your help and interest as usual, now we close candidate
accepting. I hope we can release soon the complete list of candidates.
This election gets a wide attention, and we have now close to 20
candidates. I'm really excited about that.
Quicklist of candidate statement by language:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Election_translations_2006/En#Candidates
Some of those candidates came late, but I hope the Wikimedia community
pay impartial attention to all those candidates. All statements will
be read closely, ideally in the language most convenient for each
reader, that is, each voter. Regretfully we need to admit not all
voter can read those statement in the language they are most familiar
with, though.
But luckily and thankfully being helped by many eager translators,
some language speakers will be able to have each of those statements
in their own languages - or not. It depends on our volunteering staff,
and if you are multilingual, you can help it. Your translation will
help your friends in your community and help assuring the neutrality
and impartiality of this coming Election. I think no one will be happy
if some candidates have their statements in multiple language, and
others have only in few, or some language speaker voters can read what
a certain candidate think and promise, but need to rely on machine
translation or a language version which is obscure for them at all. I
want to pursue the equal opportunity to the highest extent. On this
Election. Not only because I am serving as officer to that, but also I
believe in the equal right of us the Wikimedia editor and trust you
all as collaborator to the same goal; to provide free knowledge in
every potion of this planet, in every language. And voting for our
community representative should be one of most significant part to
pursue this goal in my opinion. And for that, we need your help, you
German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Polish ... and many other
translators.
Again, we need your help. To provide all our voters enough information
consider this Election as serious as possible. As impartial as
possible. And you can help us. Us the Wikimedia community, assuring it
the global character, the equality - and free access to a certain
knowledge: what those candidate think about our mission. So, give a
look to our workspace and consider what you can do!

> I too found it odd that most statements were only in English, while most candidates stated that they participate in several languages (I wonder, what is the level of participation if you don't speak the language...). But what bothered me more was the level of English used in the statements. I've translated candicacy statements before, among other things on foundation and meta, but this was the first time I almost gave up: guys, what difficult words you use! Please keep in mind that the statements are also meant for non-native English speakers. If you use such difficult English now, how will that be when non-native English speakers try and understand board discussions? Fruggo 07:39, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Well said.
I hope all native English speaking editors, in particular who are
ambitious to get involved into the Foundation level, or even on the
community, all who wants to join the interproject a/o -language type
activities, more than half of the Wikimedia project participants are
NOT native speakers of English.
Fruggo is a good translator and one of core staff of En -> Nl
translations for a long time. Not only on candidate presentation, but
on other pages, I myself have faced several problems. I appreciate her
to bring up this problem in this occasion.
Also, I would like to stress hereby the Election Committee don't
assure each of candidates the possibility of translation. If you
writes unclearly, your statement loss the chance to be translated and
read on the community. So, dear candidate, please check your statement
and consider if it is clear for everyone, not for your friends who are
native English speakers, but for all. And if possible, consider to
rewrite it more clearly, or provide the community with another english
version - simple English or alike. And if you are capable in multiple
languages, please try to prepare another language version by your own
hands. For multilingual translators, such possibility of comparison
might be helpful to make a better work.
We try to find translators, and currently many translators are
volunterring to put those statement into their language, but as Fruggo
properly said on the above, no one cannot translate what they cannot
understand. It might be harmful, misguiding the reader-voters.
To translators: I request you all the Election translator to consider
to leave your work incomplete, boldly, in case you are not sure you
understand properly. Misinformation is worse than no information in my
opinion. Leave the original message in the original language and leave
your comment on the talk or as comment on that page. If you ask the
candidate to ask to clarify what he or she intended, I will greately
appreciate you for your efforts, and possibly the community, but
please note, it is not mundetory for you and you needn't be exhausted
for this work. Please give up, before you are torn. Close the window
and go out to take a fresh air of the late summer.

Hello all,
thank you for your works always, also for Election related matters.
Now we have over 25 language version of Election notice thanks to your
work. I am very happy with all your cooperation.
Still we need to work though, specially on candidate presentations
(some language versions aren't available, some is still ongoing), I
expect our works go in progress surely, day by day. If you want to
involved more, please visit the Election pages!
I would like to show my full appreciation to Arno Lagrange and Jd.
Those French guys did a great job for organize the translation or its
mulitingualization. I would like to stress Arno's hospitality, he has
cared for all candidates' presentations; translated them into his
language(s), and tried to save them in case some of them didn't appear
in particular language version of general presentation page. It is a
noble attitude which a candidate can show to other candidate, and I
expect other candidates behave as nice as him.
Jd took care of translators' page and turned it very user-friendly. He
did other many nice works.
And if I mention all names here, this mail is too long to read at your
mailer. So please forgive me not to mention you here in particular,
but please remember I am aware of you all and deeply appreciate each
of you.

Dear all,
The Special Projects Committee is holding an open meeting this Friday
at 2200 UTC on IRC (channel to be determined). Please sign up on meta
if you are interested in attending, and add notes to the agenda
whether or not you can be there at that time:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Special_projects_committee#Public_meeti…
The meeting is expected to last around two hours. Note that there is
also a public mailing list, spcommittee-l, that you can subscribe to
discuss projects before and after.
Best,
SJ
Hi!
Aphaia/britty and I were talking on irc about the latest "Operations
report" by Domas (see Foundation-l) and agreed it would be great "You,
outhere", translate it and forward it to local mailing lists :)
I will do so tomorrow for WikiFR-l.
As britty said to me, tech things are among the biggest concerns for
many people, and since it's the largest part of the foundation budget,
it would be great to spread as much information as can be on this subject.
jd :)
Dear all,
Wikimania 2006 just closed its doors a week or so ago, and it is
already time to think about the next edition.
As happened in 2005 and 2006, the city hosting Wikimania in 2007 will
be chosen among whichever candidate cities dare/deign/want to
participate in the "hosting Wikimania" contest.
All information concerning how to launch a bid for your city/location
can be found on meta:
*http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2007/Bids
*http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2007/Official_requirements_for_bidding_cities
Please follow the instructions on that last page to build your bid.
The Wikimania 2007 organizing team stays at your disposal for any
questions you might have concerning the bidding process and/or the
bidding requirements.
Happy bidding!
Delphine
PS. I have removed all red links to non-existing unoffical bids.
Please only add a link when there is some kind of content to the bid
and make sure the bid is classified with the name of the city, not the
country.
PPS. Dear translators, thank you for translating this message and
sending it to your respective home lists.

Ciao, ho iniziato a tradurre qualche programma per la elezione del board
verso l'italiano. Utilizzo un CAT-Tool in modo che posso facilmente
aggiornare le traduzioni, Questo facilita anche il proof-reading, perché
la frase in inglese è sopra la frase italiana.
Visto che il mio italiano non è perfetto servirebbe qualcuno che da uno
sguardo ad una pagina.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Eloquence/Programma_2006/tmx
Quando si clicca su edit il testo diventa ben leggibile - a vederlo così
sembra strano.
Ad un punto è stato modificato il testo originale - quindi la frase
dall'inglese non si trova esattamente ("la possibilità di dimostarvi che
posso far valere tutte le mie abilità")
Domani farò un altro pezzetto - ho visto che ci sono parecchie cose dove
manca ancora l'italiano (anche di altri candidati).
Grazie!!!
