This is Brian from Der Mundo. Several people have commented about our
choice to use Facebook Connect and I'd like to respond to that.
We don't require a login to view translations, but to edit
translations we do. Requiring users to login under some sort of
verified identity does two things: it rewards good behavior (we can
credit translators, show their pictures on a map, and so forth), and
it discourages anonymous trolls. It is also easier for users if they
can log in using an existing account versus creating yet another
account. We went with Facebook for the initial release because so many
people are already there, its easy to use, and is also widely used to
share links.
We do plan to support other systems, including Wikipedia (we are
working on a proposal for a signin process that will enable users to
login with their wikipedia account, while our system will get
information about a users access rights in wikipedia and weight their
submissions). Google, Linked In and Twitter are also on the plan.
For now, we are focused primarily on the following tasks:
* fixing what's broken (often someone else's html)
* adding crowd funded professional translation and more machine
translation options
* adding social features, such as showing translators for a page on a
popup or map
* identifying a few initial affinity groups who will use the system
heavily (we already have a group forming to translate LGBT news and
blogs for example)
We'll add more signon options once we have things running smoothly and
have the core features in place. We're very much of the release early,
release often mindset, so we will be adding more options. Google
signon is pretty easy for us to support since this runs mostly on App
Engine, so that will probably appear fairly soon. The other services
are somewhat harder to connect to, so we'll probably get to them a bit
later.
BTW, we are looking for people who are leaders among various affinity
groups (for example, people involved in reporting news from the
uprising in the middle east) to create translation communities. It is
easy to do with services like Google Groups, Listserv, etc to curate
content and organize translators, while Der Mundo is useful as an
editing and link sharing tool. I'd like to see a group emerge to
translate art related sites and blogs. In any case, there's lots of
interesting stuff out there that currently remains bottled up in its
source language.

Der Mundo was built by the team behind the Worldwide Lexicon, an open source human/machine translation platform that has been in operation for about three years now. Der Mundo is an open content service. Our aim is to create a global translation corpora using user edited translations, and to share this data with translation technology researchers so they can build open systems comparable to Google Translate (at present most machine translation systems are closed systems with closely held translation data).

I'm new to this board, so I'm not really sure how to do this yet.
I'm just letting you know that a new translation is underway on http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/WMF/Staff/tpi - I'm translating the page from English into Tok Pisin (Pidgin English form used in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, New Britain, New Ireland).
If anyone has any comments on the work or what I'm doing, point them here or leave them on the talk page for the translation, and I'll be happy to deal with them.

Thank you for your comments. For your information, I raised a bug report on this. The problem has been identified as follows: if you start a line with the word "From" then the message is truncated in the archive (and also in the copy sent to yourself). This bug was first identified in October 2010 but has yet to be fixed, so we may still have to live with it for a while yet. I have requested, via on of the list administrators, that some thought be given to ways of providing information about bugs and other guidance on using the lists. That might save us all a lot of time and frustration.
I think it's ironic that my e-mail, which is partly about the
missing localisations of the fundraiser, should itself be missing.
I also apologise to those members of this list who were seriously annoyed and greatly inconvenienced by my futile attempts to fix the problem myself.

it's generally not wise to resurrect an unfriendly thread, but I'd
like you all to know some glitches we've seen for years.

issue affects no entire subscribers but have repeated.
Sadly there is nothing to do on the level of list moderators. Mailman
developers or Wikimedia admins may help or not.
I'd like to stress it's beyond both list moderators and stewards.
Stewards have rights to manage Wikimedia wikis and list is separated
from those wikis. It is a different system at all. And on moderators -
you may know I'm one of moderators of this list and some of my mails
have not been archived for years. I don't know why. But it happens.
Sorry Eleri for late response and giving no help. I'd love to see it
fixed, but have no idea how to do.

Dear all,
First, I would like to thank all of you who helped with the "MediaWiki
1.17" notice translation request.
As you might have seen, the tech team encountered quite a few issues and
had to postpone the upgrade. Because the previous request mentioned a
specific date and time, we couldn't reuse it.
In order to avoid this problem in the future, I've created a new
translation request, for a generic message that we can reuse for future
maintenance.
That way, we won't have to translate a different notice each time. It'll
be less work for translators, and it'll give the tech team more
flexibility.
