Howdy translators!
I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce some of the Foundation's
fundraising staff to you and explain how things are going to work with
this year's fundraiser (currently scheduled to start November 7).
Basically, what we're planning on doing for this fundraiser is not just
"translate" the fundraising messages, but also "localize" them. We
realize that not all messages work the best in every language, culture or
region so in addition to translating the English messages, we will also
have the option of other messages specific to your language or region...
and who knows better how to get people to donate in your language and
your region than you do? :) We really need your help this year to come
up with local messages yourself and also to help get the rest of your
local community involved.
This is where the fundraising team comes in. This fundraising season
myself, Keegan Peterzell, and Deniz Gültekin are the ones who have been
tasked with reaching out to every single wiki to try and get local
participation in the fundraiser planning and implementation. We're here
both to answer questions as they come up and to listen to your feedback
about what types of messaging will work and won't work. We'll
constantly be tweaking or changing things, based on your input, to try
to make everything as perfect as possible for the readers and donors in
your language and region.
If you have any questions or want to help out please feel free to
contact me, Keegan, or Deniz:
* James Alexander, User:Jalexander, <jalexander(a)wikimedia.org>
* Keegan Peterzell, User:Kpeterzell, <kpeterzell(a)wikimedia.org>
* Deniz Gültekin, User:Dgultekin, <dgultekin(a)wikimedia.org>
Thanks and I look forward to working with you throughout this
fundraiser! We'll be kicking off the discussions on your wikis very
soon, and would be delighted if you all would participate and also help
translate our initial message into your own language!
James Alexander

Being new to translation of video subtitles, it took me a while to find out how to view the videos. This is what I found out:
1) You can view the videos on Wikimedia Commons at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_Foundation_videos.
2) If you can't play the videos on your computer, consult the help page http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Media_help.
3) To see subtitles on videos at Wikimedia Commons you need to enable the MwEmbed gadget - see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:MwEmbed
4) The talk page of the english subtitles has got links to the subtitled videos and so has the file description page.
5) Because the videos are made up of more than one speaker, you have to view the videos to find out when one speaker changes to another. Cues for change of speaker in the English text would have been helpful, but no big deal.
Have fun with these.
Regards,
Eleri James (Lloffiwr)

All three videos released to-date already have English language transcriptions:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=TimedText:Edit_Button.ogv.en…http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=TimedText:Nice_People_MEDIUM…http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=TimedText:Wikipedia_User_Nam…
Translation is straightforward without the use of any external tools
-- just replace "en" with the language of your choice, copy in the
English transcription, and start translating.
For transcription, a very open web-based effort, as Michael points
out, is http://universalsubtitles.org/ -- dotsub.com is user-friendly
and well-established, but deeply proprietary. But at this point, we
don't need transcription, just more translation. :-) So please forward
this mail to any relevant lists and help us get more TimedText
translations. We can then import them into any of the large
distribution channels.

This ended up being a bit long. In the future, I'd like to make a
2-paragraph version of these specially for translation.
At any rate, while we currently hold meetings in English, I hope we
can work out a way to have summaries of Board meetings and resolutions
translated on regular basis.

Hello,
This is a quick update on recent and pending Board work. I intend to
send these out on a regular basis, including the work of Board
committees.
Summer meetings
In July, the Board held its summer meeting in Gdańsk before Wikimania.
We discussed internal Board committees, movement roles, and the last
stage of the strategic plan. We agreed to try out a revised meeting
schedule this year, with additional IRC meetings and just three
in-person meetings, as well as a possible retreat (this would be the
first one in four years -- we would
finally need to disambiguate m:Board retreat ).
We said goodbye and a hearty thank you to Michael Snow, and welcomed
our new chapters-selected trustee, Phoebe Ayers. New officers were
elected. And the Trustees spent more time enjoying Wikimania than
has happened in recent memory - less overbooking, more time
participating in sessions.... a welcome change.
On August 31, we held the first IRC meeting of the fiscal year, to
review and discuss broad targets for the strategic plan. Minutes of
that meeting will be posted shortly.
At the same time, we also approved the formation of Wikimedia Eesti.
Welcome to the Estonian chapter! This chapter has the distinction of
having received approval without translating any of their core
documents into English. (While I like this, I hope that ee. editors
will find time to update the Estonian pages on Meta to reflect the
current state of the projects, in the language of their choice...)

You can read the latest minutes and resolutions here:

Upcoming meetings
The next meeting of the Board will be in San Francisco, October 8-9.
The agenda will include a review of the final version of the five-year
strategic plan, and the controversial content study facilitated by
Robert Harris. Comments and suggestions on this and future meetings
are welcome:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Board_meetings
Finally, there will be an informal open Wikimedia meeting Saturday,
September 11 on IRC, with our two newest Trustees.

On behalf of the Board,
Sam

Open Meetings welcome questions and discussion in all active Wikipedia
languages. If you want to attend, and are not comfortable with
English, we will find someone who can help translate during the
meeting. Please contact me via my talk page on Meta.

Hello,
In an annual effort to welcome new Board members with an informal
chat, the newest Wikimedia Trustees (Phoebe and Bishakha) are taking
part in an open meeting on IRC this Saturday. This is a forum to
discuss Wikimedia issues and anything else that's on your mind.
Where : #wikimedia on irc.freenode.net
When : Saturday September 11, 1600-1700 UTC
(That's 0900 PST / 1200 EST / 1800 CEST / 2130 IST)
All are welcome - please join the meeting with ideas or questions
about Wikimedia and the Projects, or simply with good cheer! If you
have a topic to add to the agenda, please add it on Meta:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_meetings#September_2010
We will keep the meeting to an hour, and will cover the agenda before
moving to an open discussion. Summary minutes will be published.
I hope to see many of you there,
Sam
