Hello,
Seasons greetings
Transcom is beginning a spring house keeping drive on Wikimedia
Foundation website [1]. We happily invite you to join this cleaning-up
and help renew pages or add new translations.
WMF site needs to be up-to-date, in every language ideally. By now WMF
site has its content in many languages. Some pages are available in
over 10 or even 20. But not every page is regularly updated. Some
contents are based on year old one or much older ones, like the
English version created in 2005. For example,
- Spanish Home Page (Portada) is based on September 2005 English version.
- Romanian and Italian Home Pages are based on an much earlier version.
- Korean page seems to be much older (2004?)
- Turkish and Finnish "About Wikimedia" were last modified in 2006,
and thus not in form of FAQ.
We Transcom propose a schedule for cleaning-up as follows:
#0. This announcement
#1. Waiting phase (2 weeks, until April 7)
We Transcom ask every translators to check their language pages, and
if they are outdated, to renew those pages. We expect you translators
to begin your work within 2 weeks ... you can jump in translation
directly or just say on this list "I'll take care of it very soon", if
you are willing to help.
#2. Determine outdated and abandoned pages (from April 8): if someone
works or will soon work on a page at that moment, we are happy to wait
for their translation.
#3. Turning those outdated and abandoned pages into soft redirects.
Soft redirects will be template messages with a link to another
language version or more. We are thinking English versions, unless the
other language is recommended. We'll make a template for this purpose.
The draft is on meta [2]. An example of look and feel of French
version "sorry for your inconvenience template" is available [2']
#4. Final review (May 21)
There would be the pages which are not ready on April 8 but ongoing
or just said to be ready in days. If no work is done at all by this
date, those pages will also be turned into redirect.
Cbrown1023 made a list of outdated pages [3], it will be a good start
to review your language pages.
Workspace for translation of each page may be found through
meta:Translation requests (aka m:TR). [4]
Questions and suggestions are welcome as always. You are welcome to
ask a question on this list, m:Meta talk:Babylon [5] or IRC
channel #wikimedia-translation. For general guidance about translation
on meta, m:Translation will be helpful. [6]
Happy translation!

Hello and Namaste!
Although not in the official bidding list,Kathmandu has aspired to host
the 2009 Wikimania conference .For a country like Nepal, poor in economy
as well as several other aspects of technology and knowledge, such an
opportunity not only bestows us with improvisation in our existing
capabilities but helps us broaden our horizon of inquisitiveness and
knowledge.Wikimedia is an established institution which has helped
millions of people worldwide in terms of unbiased and easily available
source of information on a click specially in developing countries like
us.It has also fostered a feeling for community participation and social
meeting from all over the world.
In such terms , it would be a high privilege to host such a grand
organizational meeting in the doorsteps of a country like ours.Kathmandu
is capable for handling such an event provided the rich Nepalese
hospitality, excellent hotels , excellent international convention
facility and rich cultural and ecological diversity. It would be an honour
for us as well as the rest of the wikimedia community to avail such
opportunities to Kathmandu.
All the cities bidding for such aspirations are far better in terms of
services, but still we are optimistic that with the community support
Kathmandu can bid well.
We look forward towards your co-operation.
Thank you

Hi there
Wikimania 2008 has just released the scholarships info page, and we would
appreciate translations of the document, which can be found at

Many thanks
Mark
All -
the below announcement needs to be translated into as many languages
as possible. I would suggest, as a process, that
* I will send it to a bunch of mailing lists on Thursday evening PST,
e.g. wikipedia-l, wikien-l, foundation-l.
* People on this list speaking various languages will have prepared
translations ready by then, and can send them directly to the relevant
lists in their language.
Does that make sense?
Thanks,
Erik
Subject: Help us Test Stable Versions!
Please translate this announcement into other languages and forward it
to other mailing lists and village pumps.
The Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Germany have collaborated, with
financial support from Wikimedia France, to support development of a
new extension to our software
which makes it possible to flag versions of wiki articles as having
reached a certain quality. This new toolset could mark the beginning
of a new era for Wikipedia and its sister projects, giving readers
more transparency than ever about the quality of a given article. A
special note of thanks to Aaron Schulz, who has developed much of the
functionality as a volunteer -- we would not be where we are today
without him.
Before this functionality will be enabled on any Wikimedia project, it
needs to be tested thoroughly for usability, bugs, security and
performance. Test wikis have been set up in English and German
(because the German Wikimedia community has been driving the
development of this functionality from the beginning).
http://en.labs.wikimedia.org/http://de.labs.wikimedia.org/
These wikis contain a copy of the Wikibooks database. This copy is
completely separate from the "real" Wikibooks, so do not worry about
destroying anything of value. Please follow the instructions on the
Main Pages to participate. If you do not speak English or German, we
encourage you right now to
- set up test wikis independently using the open source extension
available from http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:FlaggedRevs ,
or
- change the user interface preference, and create pages in the
English test wiki in your language.
This is due to our limited capacity to set up additional wikis. If you
feel you really, absolutely, strongly need a test wiki in your
language, please file a request through:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/
Wikimedia communities will also have to decide what kind of
configuration to use for their project. Key questions to answer
include:
- What quality attributes should there be?
- Who should be permitted to flag changes as having been reviewed for
vandalism, or for other quality attributes?
- Should the default view for unregistered users change to the "stable
version" on all pages, some pages, or no pages?
The German Wikimedia community has implemented a particular
long-standing community proposal and will probably go live the soonest
with this configuration; other communities will still have to develop
consensus.
What's next?
The test will run at least until April 10, 2008 before the extension
is implemented live on any wiki. This is to allow any serious problems
to be surfaced by the community. If there are no critical open issues
as of April 10, any language/project community will be permitted to
file a request through https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ to activate the
extension. This request will have to point to pages in the project
indicating a consensus to move forward. Detailed instructions to do so
will be posted on the test wikis.
If it's still of use, I have posted a German translation here:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Lirion/de-labs
Someone should review this translation, I bet it has weaknesses,
especially since I've just done it in a few minutes ;) My experience tells
me that an instant review by me would leave too many faults.
