Hello,
I'm writing to request help translating info for the Wikimedia Commons
Picture of the Year competition for 2007. We consider this
competition is for the whole Wikimedia community so providing
translations is important to us.
Translation strings and info is all here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2007/Translat…
Round 1 starts on 10 January so we still have a few more weeks, but we
don't want to leave everything to the last minute.
German, French and Spanish are almost complete or complete. We
especially want these languages:
Polski
Italiano
日本語 [Chinese]
Русский
中文 [Japanese]
Svenska
Português
Norsk (bokmål)
Suomi
Other languages besides these are ALSO WELCOME.
For voting we are using custom software on the toolserver, you can
test it out here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2007/Voting
If there are any questions please just ask me.
thanks,
Brianna

If you could translate the following film into other languages, I
would greatly appreciate it! I also plan to show it in about a week
in Japan, so if someone could translate the Japanese subtitles, that
would be great! Just create an account, scroll right on the video and
then click choose which language you want to translate under
"Translate this film". Thanks for your help! It already has
translations in Esperanto and Norwegian, surely we can do better...
:)

Hi Maria,
You don't have to worry about anyone working over you, because as soon
as you start working, the translation will lock for an hour, so that
no one can interfere until you click Done. Also, thanks to everyone's
hard work, this trailer is now the top film in dotsub's featured film
list on the main page, so now it will really get exposure!
Thanks everyone!
Chuck
Hello,
I suppose you are interested in participating :)
Your translation and forwarding to your favorite language will be appreciated :)

Subject: [Foundation-l] [EWW] Edit Wikipedia Week
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear community,
Few days ago a pretty neat idea was proposed, an idea which could
involves all of the community members, all of you: the "Edit Wikipedia
Week". That week will take place from December 3 to 8, 2007 and the
concept is pretty simple: you, as a community member, will have the
chance to spread the word about how to edit Wikipedia or learn how to
work on one of the other sister projects. We want it to be a worldwide
event, and why not, transforming it into an annual event.
Everyone can be involved in helping to stage a bunch of "Edit
Wikipedia Week" events during that week. The idea is to stage outreach
events around the world designed to encourage people to participate in
the projects.
The events can be practically anything – big or small. It doesn't
matter how simple they seem to be, everything counts. You can talk
about the project at a local school; get yourself booked for a
television appearance; have a chat for a local photography club about
the advantages of contributing to Commons; organize a marathon weekend
for translations; discuss the different uses of the WikiPolicies to a
group of regular users you know in your place, recruit new people to
help you launch a WikiProject, or even just teach your mom how to
press a button, edit an article and save. Simple steps that will help
the world to know just what are we doing here, and why are we doing
it. Anything you think will improve the projects is valid: the idea is
to reach out to people who don't edit, or have no idea what Wikipedia
is, and encourage them to contribute on the project.
Edit Wikipedia Week is intended to be an experiment. The premise is
that anyone can organize an event for Edit Wikipedia Week, and it can
take whatever form makes sense to them. You don't need a permission,
it's a community event: feel free to just participate.
There are no fixed rules, except the following:
* Spread the word as you see it fit in your language community,
local chapter, project, family etc.
* Make sure to record the ideas that are developed in your
community, local chapter, project, family etc, in order to share your
experiences with all of us.
* Start your own Edit Wikipedia week metapage in your own
language, if you consider it useful to promote and monitor the ideas.
Spread knowledge. Spread the Wiki love. :)
Please translate this mail as much as you can, and spread it all
around you. Your local mailing lists, your local village pump, your
blog, etc...
* See http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Edit_Wikipedia_Week for more informations

Quote of the Day (English): http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/WQ:QOTD
Hi,
we updated "Template:fundraisingmenu" so please match your language
version to it, giving localized values to those new variables.
According to the page, we have now 28 language versions. English and
Japanese ones are already updated:
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Template:Fundraising_menu#Variants
Here is the diff from the current version and the version just before
the ongoing campaign started:
http://wikimediafoundation.org/w/index.php?title=Template%3AFundraising_men…
The variables I'd like you to make translation (and update your
language "fundraisingmenu-xx" are two:
|linktext_spendingplans = Planned Spending
|linktext_giftcertificate = Gift Certificate
For your information, all new variables added today's update are:
|linktext_spendingplans = Planned Spending
|linktarget_spendingplans = Planned Spending Distribution 2007-2008
|linktext_giftcertificate = Gift Certificate
|linktarget_giftcertificate =
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/foundation/0/03/Gifttoken.pdf
But, as for linktarget, you may just ignore them on your language
version: unless it is translated (and for Gift Certificate, we decide
to keep it only in English), it should be targeting the English text.
Last not but least, as you may have noticed, we are updating now the
Fundraising page itself ... while it is largely changed graphically,
in the source level, it doesn't required massive changes - you need
only to create five short phrase translations for new variables. After
some tests and checks, I hope you are informed much about that very
soon.
Cheers,

Hi,
The forwarded mail was posted originally to foundation-l.
As said, we need those who select good quotes in their language -
currently we almost picked up English quotes only for the
international version, while I added some from the first day quote.
Please visit http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2007/comments
dated subpage (e.g.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2007/comments/2007-10-23)
and make the good quotes from your eyes bold. Later we'll be able to
copy to the banner setting ... also if someone separate English ones
and other languages, even if not by lang completely, it would be a
great help (and kudos to Casey who did it for some early days quotes)
Cheers,

What we need is more people who speak the languages to select the good
ones from the dates pages. If there are any more good quotes on the
"Dates" pages, please do not hesitate to bold them and they will be
get added to the sitenotice.

Cary can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the ones for Chinese and
Japanese are just because those languages do not show up in most
browsers. We should try to keep all other language versions on the
same page, I think.

Hi,
Sitenotice was redesigned. You can see it on Commons, meta and English
projects.
To match your language version to the latest one, please visit

I hope you love it too :)

Dear translators.
For those of you who are using Betawiki, please update your bookmarks.
Betawiki is on http://translatewiki.net now and it's performance has
improved dramatically.
Betawiki can be used to translate all core messages of MediaWiki (~1900) and
the messages of about 85 extensions for MediaWiki (~1100) without requiring
any technical knowledge. Developers commit the work of the translators to
MediaWiki so it is available in the product.
In October 2007 we have committed changes to 71 languages from Betawiki. We
expect this number to grow to over 100 before Q2-2007.
Please check http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Localisation_statistics and try
to get translators to Betawiki for those languages with poor support in
MediaWiki.
You continuing support for MediaWiki localisation in Betawiki
(http://translatewiki.net) is highly appreciated.
Cheers!
Siebrand
P.s. I would appreciate it of you forwarded this mail in some form to any
