Hi all,

Today the Wikimedia Foundation released a broad statement to the community about the recently completed editor trends study and our general priorities for the calendar year. The intent here is to stimulate conversation about this data, and to provide clearer insights into our immediate priorities following the strategic plan release.

A bit of constructive criticism:

A few days ago i represented Wikimedia Israel at the Israeli Librarians Association conference. A lot of people asked me: "Wikimedia? But isn't it called Wikipedia, with a P?"

Translating this message brings this up yet again for the god-knows-which time. Wikimedia, Wikimedia, Wikimedia, Wikimedia, Wikimedia, Wikimedia. The word appears six times until the word "Wikipedia" finally pops up. Nobody knows what this Wikimedia thing, that is being shoved in their face on the top of Wikipedia, is. I am donating my time to translating a rather long text, knowing that no-one will actually understand what i am translating.

I, and many other people, wish that the the WMF was renamed to WPF. Until that happens, every time the WMF releases such a big message, please, at least think about this problem and word the messages accordingly.

The Wikimedia/Wikipedia thing is just something we'll have to live with, and in that world, using "Wikimedia" is the best way to avoid pissing off people from the non-WP projects. On the bright side, this is a message to the community, where the confusing branding is less of an issue.

Oh, now i see that the banner is only shown to logged-in users. It makes it less bad, i guess, but i am still quite sure that not all the logged in users know what "Wikimedia" is.

All i'm asking is that the people writing the next message keep this in mind.

It's a term that refers to a group that shares certain characteristics, typically a time period. In this case it refers to a group of editors who started editing in a given month, e.g. January 2008, and it follows the development of that group over time.

If you can't find a better translation, the equivalent of "group" would be fine.

I am in the middle of translating of the complete article into Hebrew and i would like to ask not enable the banner on the Hebrew Wikipedia, Wikisource etc., before i finish it. I plan to finish it tomorow. This is probably the right thing to do for all the languages, but there needs to be a way to notify the admins about it.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the plan is to only display the notice on languages that have translations right now, and then switch it to all wikis on Monday.
