I have created MediaWiki:Blogtext and MediaWiki:Blog-url to the WMF wiki. Shall I wait until MediaWiki:Blogtext is translated into multiple languages before I add this to the places where Jay is asking me to?

Cary, when you get a chance please update the WMF wiki tool system.
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Home
We still need a 'Wikimedia blog' link on the left-hand menu under 'about wikimedia'
And at the very bottom of the page, in the bar with the 'A wikimedia project' logo, please also add a "Wikimedia blog" link between the "About Wikimedia Foundation" and "Disclaimers" link.
Thanks!

Nope, because we don't translate sidebar elements on the Wikimedia Foundation wiki (we probably should.... but that's for another day ;-) ).

My answer is: go for it.

Since only registered users can be benefitted by localized interface messages (there are ways to sneak it but we haven't implemented it). And a i18n related MediaWiki extention was not on that site (you remember Brion rejected). So translation is nice but interface translation is no matter of us currently (sigh). We need to hack it later.

Hmm, I think we could manage it if we changed our templates a little bit. See for example what we do with Wikimania 2008 wiki: http://wikimania2008.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (try clicking on the different language links and see what happens to the interface).

The problem with that is that unless you encode all links with &uselang=XX, the interface will "jump" back to default (English) after just one click. It could be argued that that effect is disorienting, confusing and unexpected (there is no clear way to understand "what you did" to make the localised text disappear, nor "how to get it back").
So, IMO that is a very poor hack that is no substitute for a proper solution. (We tried to confront this problem at Commons. :) No good solution yet. More tech is needed.)
cheers, Brianna
On Betawiki we have the link encoding ?setlang= which changes the language until you setlang something else. But that doesn't work on other wikis, but would be a nice feature. Especially useful for Commons links from local projects.

I completely agree, but I think that's actually what Brion denied http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12604. If someone knows more about the extension and can sell it pretty well to Brion, please do! :-)
