A few comments on the localization of volunteer.wikimedia.org:
* the translations for "Volunteer now" are beyond horrible (e.g. volunteer translated as a noun in the Hungarian version), and apparently do not come from the usual translation process (I found no trace on strategywiki, at least). Did somebody use Google Translate, or what? One would expect such mistakes on the packaging of a chinese product, but on an official Wikimedia web page which is trying to convince people to join, it is rather awkward and should be fixed ASAP. * same goes for the translation of the title in some languages, or so I've been told. The title is present on the translation page ([[strategy:Call_for_participation/Appeal_letter]]) but has been added after many of the translations were already done and without notification, so I suppose it was simply not noticed in some cases. * asking people the last day to translate the task force application text and then not using it at all is probably not a very good idea. * all options in the language select box are in the content language (that is, in English when you first visit the page) which is not very helpful. It would be better if each would be in its own language like the interwiki links. * sorting of the options is done based on the English names of the languages, which looks stupid when they are not actually in English. (Not very relevant as there is no reason to use the select box twice, but if you already go through the effort of translating them...)

Same thing in the Spanish version, not translated into Italian, German and several others, but done right in French and Czech.

Agree on that. Anyone has any idea where is this?

That text says "please do not distribute it yet". Plus, there's no "Volunteer now" to be translated.
There are things that have been done in a rush. I just hope we can fix the problems that came with that decision as soon as possible.

I've just added a == Button == section with that text. Please translate it, and the previous section (Title) too if it's not translated yet into your language; I'll file a bug in the (UTC) evening if developers do not notice the problem until then.

Good idea, Tisza.
We should reflect that also here: http://strategy.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Translation/Call_fo...
Would you file the bug now? This thing is already out, so we should try to solve it ASAP.

Hi folks:
Thanks for your comments about these translations. As you know, the interface translations were sort of a mess - there were interface elements that we didn't know about until almost the last moment. Rather than present them totally in English, we made the conscious decision to get what we could from previous forms and other places, and know that some of it would be flawed. The alternative would be to send out ANOTHER request for translation, which we didn't want to do, because translators had already done so much on this project and we didn't want to keep hammering you with requests, particularly for things to happen in a very short amount of time.
The application was not presented to us as early as we would ideally have liked; interface elements were unknown... all of these were issues with the process, but are issues that we're learning from.
Going forward, your solution (add a section for button so that we can manually update flawed translations) is a good one. Any that are added, I'll get updated as quickly as possible. In the meantime, if there's something particularly horrible, feel free to send me a private mail and I'll see what we can do.
Thanks for your hard work...
Philippe

If you need a few very short phrases translated quickly, the best approach is probably asking around on the #wikipedia-<language> IRC channels, or the local versions of the Village Pump (which you can find through the interwiki links). I very much doubt that anyone would find a request to translate "Volunteer now" burdensome.

The largest languages seem to have translations already:
http://strategy.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&redirs=...
Hopefully these can be added quickly.

Any progress on that? The page still displays the wrong button text.
huh. I thought all translations had been updated. Let me check. On Sep 27, 2009, at 11:51 AM, Tisza Gergő wrote:

Hi, Don't want to make this thread repetitive, but could you please make sure that the Hungarian version uses the text specified at http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Call_for_participation/Appeal_letter/hu #Button Thanks, Bence Damokos

In the improbable case somebody is reading this and is going to do something about it in the near future, you might consider fixing the cs version, too…

I know it's frustrating. The process to get those translations updated requires accessing the server, and Eugene is the one who can do that. Unfortunately, he's traveling. We are ready for him, and once he's back we will be ready to update.

No idea what makes you think so… In Czech, it is a nonsense fragment “Dobrovolně se” (something like “Voluntarily”), definitely not “done right”.
And the same problem is the page caption “který sepsali Michael Snow a Jimmy Wales.” (“written by Michael Snow and Jimmy Wales”) – which is only a fragment of “Dopis, který sepsali Michael Snow a Jimmy Wales.” specified at http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Call_for_participation/Appeal_letter/cs#Title

Sorry about that, Petr; it sounded like "volunteer yourself" from my Slovene.

Perhaps there was a problem while moving the text?
