Hey guys,
So I wanted to do two things, firstly a brief keeping you guys in the loop on the state of the international fundraiser and what to expect over the coming months.
As many of you may know from the metric's meetings and emails to the wikimedia-l list last november, the plan is to shift from the big push annual fundraiser to a more subtle, lower impact year round fundraiser. This is going to be happening over the coming months and I am sure that more details about how exactly this will happen will appear in time.
With regards to the international portion of the 12/13 fundraiser, we intend to restart testing in the top ten languages in the coming weeks, with the remainder of languages following later on. This means that you will start seeing translation requests coming in somewhat regularly over the coming months. Most of work that was done will still be used so nothing has gone to waste but there is a greatly expanded thank you portion to the fundraiser featuring numerous editors from all backgrounds that will require alot of work.
We are going to aim to try and keep a torrent of notifications from being sent out so some will be sent out in batches via a bot as well as through this mailing list to at least reduce some of the annoyance.

It seems that its related to the migration of our main services to the new data center http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_center in Virginia, USA.
The wiki will be down for at least an hour if things go smoothly, possibly longer if things go wrong :)

Good to have you on board :)
Here is a quick run through on how to translate using the extension:
1) http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2012/Translation/Drop_down_banner... This will take you to the source text which in this case is english.
2) You'll see "Translate this page" near the top, click that.
3) Select your language from the drop down menu and then click "fetch" on the right hand side.
4) Double click on a text that is highlighted in green
5) Translate! :D
There are other ways of getting to this screen via a notification, or via your languages semi-translated page but they will all take you to this interface.

Ok, thank you Joseph, I began translating some entries from the list into Italian. There is a problem with the 3rd one: It says: "We have only 150 staff but serve 450 million users, and have costs like any other top site: servers, power, rent, programs, and staff."
It was translated as the 2nd entry, whereas a solution to this is:
"Abbiamo solo 150 dipendenti, ma siamo al servizio di 450 milioni di utenti e abbiamo dei costi come qualsiasi altro sito importante: server, energia elettrica, affitti, programmi e dipendenti."
But a writing appears: "Edit conflict detected", and I cannot save the suggested translation.

An English site notice has appeared about the picture of the year competition on Welsh wikipedia. I can see it listed in the meta site notices but I can't see it listed anywhere on the meta translation statistics listing of things to translate. There is no link for translation on the site notice, and I do not remember receiving a post from the translators-l mail list. I have looked on Commons, and can see an admin page there, but I can't understand how to do a translation from that page. I am getting very frustrated. Help please.

I don't know exactly how to do that. But I found a way to do this:
Go to page
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2012/Translati...
and scroll down to the section "Announcements and sitenotices". Click then the word Translated in row "English" and in column "Banners" to open the page with the English text that has the URL
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2012/Translati...
Open the edit window of this page and copy the English text into the clipboard, change the language code "en" in the URL to "cy" that you will have the URL
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2012/Translati...
This will be a non-existing page. Open the edit window of this non-existing page and copy then the English text into this window and replace the English text by the Welsh one.
Finally you should create the Welsh link on page
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2012/Translati...
Click the edit link behind the header "Translations" and copy the text of another language (probably English) behind the language which is alphabetically before the Welsh language code. Replace the language code of the copied language by the language code cy of Welsh and set the translation state to ready.
I'm sure you know how to do that all.
I did it for Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian and I hope it will work. Unlike Welsh Wikipedia, in Sorbian Wikipedias the sitenotice doesn't appear until now.
I hope that Commons doesn't choose the chapter language so the translation into our minority languages will be for nothing.

The last sentence of the site noice on cyWP is covered by the text in the link you provided. However, the first sentence is slightly different - "Round 1 of the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year competition will end January 30".
I have found a template which I think might need translating here: [http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:POTY2012/en] . I have also requested a "Translation FAQ" to be written for this on Wikimedia Commons, plus a link to the translation page to be added to the site notice (similar to the links to meta). I hope that will help to decrease the frustration levels of users on cyWP confronted by yet another English message posted without warning, as far as I can see, on cyWP. Since the site notice hasn't appeared on the Sorbian Wikipedia, it would not surprise me if it turned out that the message is confined to some regions only, including the UK, and that whoever is the administrator on the site notices doesn't realise that there are 6 native languages with Wikipedias in the UK! Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Eleri, actually I send a message to this list in November to ask for translations, also a sitenotice asked people to contribute with translations for almost a full month in Commons. The logic in the central notice is: You get the message in your language, if that doesnt exist, in english. Geo tagging doesn't play any part in it. _____ *Béria Lima*

I don't know exactly how to do that. But I found a way to do this:
Go to page
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2012/Translati...
and scroll down to the section "Announcements and sitenotices". Click then the word Translated in row "English" and in column "Banners" to open the page with the English text that has the URL
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2012/Translati...
Open the edit window of this page and copy the English text into the clipboard, change the language code "en" in the URL to "cy" that you will have the URL
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2012/Translati...
This will be a non-existing page. Open the edit window of this non-existing page and copy then the English text into this window and replace the English text by the Welsh one.
Finally you should create the Welsh link on page
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2012/Translati...
Click the edit link behind the header "Translations" and copy the text of another language (probably English) behind the language which is alphabetically before the Welsh language code. Replace the language code of the copied language by the language code cy of Welsh and set the translation state to ready.
I'm sure you know how to do that all.
I did it for Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian and I hope it will work. Unlike Welsh Wikipedia, in Sorbian Wikipedias the sitenotice doesn't appear until now.
I hope that Commons doesn't choose the chapter language so the translation into our minority languages will be for nothing.

Since the site notice hasn't appeared on the Sorbian Wikipedia, it would not surprise me if it turned out that the message is confined to some regions only, including the UK, and that whoever is the administrator on the site notices doesn't realise that there are 6 native languages with Wikipedias in the UK! Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Thank you Mono, it works fine for all three languages. BTW, Lower Sorbian has the language code dsb, not lsb. The Sorbian language codes are based on the Sorbian words hornjoserbsce resp. dolnoserbski.
The translation state should be still changed from ready to published on the banners page. Do you want to do that or shall I do that?

No, you put the banner in hsb and dsb, lsb doesn't exist, at least not for Sorbian. :-) Never mind.
You didn't answer my question about the translation state. I will change it now myself.
