Hi all,
The Wikimedia Foundation has started to deploy the latest version of MediaWiki, labeled "1.20wmf1".
Deployments will now happen every two weeks (tentatively) so I've modified the set of pages we use to communicate to our users, so that they don't require too much updating every time.
In particular, the landing page for the CentralNotice maintenance banner is now using transclusion to avoid invalidating the translations.
If you have a few minutes, your help would be welcome to do the following:
* Update the translations of https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_maintenance_notice to implement the transclusion;
* Check https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CentralNotice/Generic_maintenance_notice to see if the translation of the banner in your language is complete.
* Additionally, if you're willing, there is a more complete summary of changes available for translation at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.20/wmf1 ; I've already done the French translation. This will change for each deployment.
Many thanks for your continued help!

We are not just updating MediaWiki, but also many extensions. Yet I don't see any mention of changes in extension in the linked pages. -Niklas

Hi Niklas,
Not sure if this is relevant to the translators list, but you should of course feel free to expand the list of notable changes at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.20/wmf1/overview with what you think should be added.

Hello Guillaume,
I wanted to translate the additional sentence of the Wikimedia Maintenance Notice into Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian but the editor window says to me that I don't have the permission to translate although I translated the original text into both languages.
Regards,
Michawiki

Hi Michael,
You may be getting this message because you're trying to edit the page directly. The translations are now done using the Translate tool.
You can access the translation interface through 2 ways: * If you click the edit button and you see the "You do not have permission to edit" message, click the link labeled "the translation tool" at the end of the second line. * If you're on the page but haven't clicked the edit button yet (for example https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_maintenance_notice/hsb ), click the link that says "translated version" in the small sentence at the top of the page.
Either link should bring you to the pages where you can edit the translations; I've put the direct links below in case you can't find them: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=pag... https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=pag...

Hi Guillaume,
yes, I wanted to use the edit button. Clicking the link "translated version" it works.
Thanks,
Michael

What are the future version numbers which will appear there? Are they all going to end with "wmf1"? In some languages, including an unknown number/word in a text can be non-trivial due to vowel harmony rules.

Ah, I hadn't thought about that. The future versions will be 1.20wmf2, 1.20wmf3, 1.20wmf4, etc. and after a few months we'll switch to 1.21wmf1, 1.21wmf2 etc.
Would it be possible to use {{GRAMMAR}} for languages with such rules?

Not impossible, but limited in what it could handle (at least for Hungarian - I don't know how many other languages are in a similar situation). I have some half-baked PHP code for Hungarian inflection rules, but they can't handle a word ending with a number (wouldn't be hard to include as a special case, though), or foreign words (as choosing the right suffix depends on the pronunciation of the word). I wouldn't be comfortable using such automatic language processing if I had no idea what the parameter will be.
Also, sysadmins used to scoff at magic functions in frequently displayed templates - you need to load more code because of them or something. I'm not sure if that still holds, and whether central notices are special. Anyway, when setting up the translation, it is usually a big help if you explain what values a parameter will take (there is a pseudo-language "qqq" for that).
