Translation requests: some minor changes on Foundation website

Transcom core lang is being revised (and a question to Portuguese language editors)

Hello translators, today I ask Portuguese language editors a question about a rumor; to what extent do you understand Spanish documents? Or to what extent can those Spanish document be substitutes of equivalent Portuguese documents? I have heard such a rumor and I would like to hear the Portuguese Wikimedian opinions. Transcom [[m:Transcom]] have been working along a frame named "core langs". It is almost a set of languages Transcom members care for primarily, assuming they may be first requirement on public relation of the Foundation. From the start (this April) it has been English, French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese (ah it isn't because I am Japanese ... I think it no favorism ... it reflects just facts that most of Japanese are illitate in any other language than Japanese and that Japanese projects are today in a significant size ......). I hope it goes live after discussion and improvement(s). Just note, core lang doesn't mean the significance of each language per se: it works just as a short term goal of Transcom, and we Transcom are willing to revise it periodically, mainly following each language community growth and also growth of volunteering translators' pool. And my first question therefore arises here, since my evaluation (see meta please) suggests Portuguese may be considered a possible candidate to that "core lang" and it is regretfully one of languages whose translators we can find not every time. So I would like to ask you Portuguese translators: how could Spanish documents helpful for you? I heard from several Skandinavian editors that they are okay with other Skandinavian language document; a Swedish editor is okay with Norwegean document, vise versa. I would like to know whether the helpfulness of Spanish documents to Portuguese language editors is so strong as Skandinavian languages to those editors or much weaker. And if Portuguese language community need to have Foundation related documents in their own langauge, beware, you Portuguese language translators will be stalked by Transcom members ... <g> and some other language (perhaps Russian according to the current proposal) will be less suffered by such ostinate contacts from Transcom, just because of the limitation of human resources on the coordinators' side. Just fact-checking. After I read this inquiry, I moved the latest version on meta to the foundation website. Of course, I am not sure if it is the best version, as non-Spanish speaker, however, it seemed more Asturian ... A native Spanish edited those versions, supposedly from the reason of closer familiarity between Spanish and Asturian. Later a ast-3/es-n editor made correction, and that version was what I moved to, and what you see on the website. Has any editor recommendation for fixing that? Translating wikipedia articles using OmegaT - Q&A chat

Hi, sorry again for one of those unpersonal mails. And sorry for some typos - I am not re-reading the mail and my "r"-key still creates problems. I will crosspost this mail to several mailing lists that could be interested as well, so you won't see the single recipients. From your answers I noted that being in different time zones and having different requirements we probably will not make it to do a real OmegaT-course online - some also don't have Skype. So I will be online for sure tomorrow morning from 07:00-09:00 UTC and on Thursday from 07:00-09:00 UTC (corresponds to 09:00-11:00 Italian time). I very likely will not be here on Friday morning. Anyway I am online normally every morning in the mentioned hours as well as in the evening. I'll try to create a schedule I update on a daily basis so that you can see when you can find me. All of the bids were considered against a range of criteria, not only location. Amongst many other factors, Taipei offered the venue and accommodation on a single site, and their organizing team had prior experience from running the Chinese Wikimania this year. It's unfair to them to suggest they only won because they're in Asia. If Asia was a sure winner from the start, we wouldn't have needed a meeting lasting more than 4 hours on Saturday to determine which city would be successful. A few people seem to think that the others were rejected purely for being in Europe, but that was not the case, and we would have said from the start if we were only accepting bids from other continents so as not to waste people's time. Taipei chosen to host Wikimania 2007

The Wikimania jury has met and are pleased to announce that Wikimania 2007 will be held in Taipei, Taiwan. Taipei had the winning combination of a dedicated and experienced bidding team, a great venue with centralized accomodation and community areas, and strong sponsorship opportunities. Taipei also provides the opportunity to focus attention on the growing Asian language projects and the international aspect of the Wikimedia Foundation, as well as learning about other free knowledge efforts and projects in the region. This was a very difficult decision. Every one of the shortlisted bids this year were outstanding. The Turin bid came in a close second; their team made a great effort to procure two strong locations and extensive government support, and gathered the Italian community together to develop an outstanding bid. Alexandria deserves recognition for bringing the Egyptian and Arabic-language community into the spotlight, and for finding a remarkable venue partner in the Library of Alexandria. London also produced a very strong bid, with a great venue, focus on educational outreach, the diversity of London, and the strong Wikimedia UK team. Thank you to all of the bidders, including those who did not make the shortlist, for your time and energy in developing these bids. We hope this year's city teams will find ways to build on the contacts and sponsors developed in the bid process for a 2008 bid or for hosting a regional event. We strongly encourage all who bid this year, and those of you wondering whether your city could have done the same, to consider preparing city bids for Wikimania in 2008 or 2009. Unofficial bids for 2008 should be started now, as the decision on that city will be made this winter (more details on 2008's bid process coming soon; watch http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2008/Bids for updates). Now the work for the winners will begin, as they develop plans for the conference next summer. [meta] TR subpages overhaul

Hello There are some theme-specified translation request (TR) pages on meta. They were created in this February. They are including: - TR/Announcement http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/Annoucement - TR/Policy http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/Policy - TR/Reports http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/Reports Since they seemed to be outdate, I commented them out in a certain moment. Perhaps in this July. So you may have not been aware of them. I have questions on those three pages; I would like to know 1) who watches those page / visits them regularly 2) who thinks them useful 3) who are interested in maintaining those pages (currently none in my assumption). They are list pages which one has to edit automatically, not automatically generated (e.g. on Wikinews). I am afraid we have no automatic generated list feature (DynamicPageList?) on meta. And each requests are not categorized by their theme. Personally I find it useful for certain people (but not me, since I), and myself not to have enough time to update them. I think poorly maintained pages are not helpful and we are better to archive or delete them. As usual, I welcome anyone who is willing to maintain one or more of those pages and if my third question is answered by such a devoting one, I have no reason to request their deletion. On the other hand, if no one is interested in their maintenance, I would go to request for deleting them even if there are some people who are watching those pages. Not updating request pages is meaningless, or in a worse case, harmful because of potential cause of disinformation in my opinion. If no one shows interest in their maintenance in one week, I think I would like to bring them to Request for Deletion. On TR/materials, I am not sure currently ... perhaps it makes a sense to move TR/WSIS to that page. Or not. I asked Elian who are engaging promotion if she had any idea about that. As the discussion on the germanlanguage Wikipedia are, well, in german, here is some short information in english about all this. When Jimbo visited Germany in June, me and other members of the german community approached him about stable versions. After some discussion, he decided that it would be good to finally start with stable versions and, as this is a very fundamental change, to use one project as a testing ground before starting this everywhere. As you know, we are the lucky ones ;-) A few parameters were agreed upon, namely that it should be kept simple, in particular that what version is marked and what is not, should not be the result of some voting process and that we need to seperate two issues of stable versions: fighting vandalism and controlling the factual accuracy. Thus, a concept was then worked out, based on the discussions on meta, en and de and Brion was assigned with implementing it, which he is still busy with and it will still be some months before this actually goes life. A first decision was not to call this stable versions, as this is a term where everybody understands something different. An unvandalized version is a version of an article that has not been vandalized. The right to flag a version like this is given to accounts by an automatic process, based on the number of edits and the time passed since account creation. We will start the test with 30 edits/30 days.
