Aphaia,
If you look at the English letters (meaning English-only), you'll see that it's an increasing ask string.
We started with the currency most people would likely be familiar with (besides their own) and then selected others to fill in the string.
Someone's had to be the highest ask.

I support to list many currencies in general, but not buy this exact phrase. $20 is now equivarent 1600. Why do you recommend US donors $20 and Japanese donors more than the double? That has been criticized "US greed for Asians" in some Japanese net commuity ...

It's actually meant to suggest that we accept many currencies. However, we strongly encourage translators to replace that with an appropriate amount for the locales they're dealing with. Just be sure to let us know that you did it. :) pb

I'm sorry if this has been already discussed but I don't remember. The appeals now read "a donation of $20, EURO 30, ¥4,000, or whatever they can to keep Wikipedia free" (e.g. http://meta.wikimedia.org/?diff=2234129&oldid=2234128 ). Is this a way to encourage translators to localize currencies, or we really want to stress that we accept donations in many currencies, or is this meant only for the English text? Do we have stats on the effects of different currency proposals?
