All of the bids were considered against a range of criteria, not only location. Amongst many other factors, Taipei offered the venue and accommodation on a single site, and their organizing team had prior experience from running the Chinese Wikimania this year. It's unfair to them to suggest they only won because they're in Asia. If Asia was a sure winner from the start, we wouldn't have needed a meeting lasting more than 4 hours on Saturday to determine which city would be successful. A few people seem to think that the others were rejected purely for being in Europe, but that was not the case, and we would have said from the start if we were only accepting bids from other continents so as not to waste people's time. Taipei chosen to host Wikimania 2007

The Wikimania jury has met and are pleased to announce that Wikimania 2007 will be held in Taipei, Taiwan. Taipei had the winning combination of a dedicated and experienced bidding team, a great venue with centralized accomodation and community areas, and strong sponsorship opportunities. Taipei also provides the opportunity to focus attention on the growing Asian language projects and the international aspect of the Wikimedia Foundation, as well as learning about other free knowledge efforts and projects in the region. This was a very difficult decision. Every one of the shortlisted bids this year were outstanding. The Turin bid came in a close second; their team made a great effort to procure two strong locations and extensive government support, and gathered the Italian community together to develop an outstanding bid. Alexandria deserves recognition for bringing the Egyptian and Arabic-language community into the spotlight, and for finding a remarkable venue partner in the Library of Alexandria. London also produced a very strong bid, with a great venue, focus on educational outreach, the diversity of London, and the strong Wikimedia UK team. Thank you to all of the bidders, including those who did not make the shortlist, for your time and energy in developing these bids. We hope this year's city teams will find ways to build on the contacts and sponsors developed in the bid process for a 2008 bid or for hosting a regional event. We strongly encourage all who bid this year, and those of you wondering whether your city could have done the same, to consider preparing city bids for Wikimania in 2008 or 2009. Unofficial bids for 2008 should be started now, as the decision on that city will be made this winter (more details on 2008's bid process coming soon; watch http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2008/Bids for updates). Now the work for the winners will begin, as they develop plans for the conference next summer. [meta] TR subpages overhaul

Hello There are some theme-specified translation request (TR) pages on meta. They were created in this February. They are including: - TR/Announcement http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/Annoucement - TR/Policy http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/Policy - TR/Reports http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/Reports Since they seemed to be outdate, I commented them out in a certain moment. Perhaps in this July. So you may have not been aware of them. I have questions on those three pages; I would like to know 1) who watches those page / visits them regularly 2) who thinks them useful 3) who are interested in maintaining those pages (currently none in my assumption). They are list pages which one has to edit automatically, not automatically generated (e.g. on Wikinews). I am afraid we have no automatic generated list feature (DynamicPageList?) on meta. And each requests are not categorized by their theme. Personally I find it useful for certain people (but not me, since I), and myself not to have enough time to update them. I think poorly maintained pages are not helpful and we are better to archive or delete them. As usual, I welcome anyone who is willing to maintain one or more of those pages and if my third question is answered by such a devoting one, I have no reason to request their deletion. On the other hand, if no one is interested in their maintenance, I would go to request for deleting them even if there are some people who are watching those pages. Not updating request pages is meaningless, or in a worse case, harmful because of potential cause of disinformation in my opinion. If no one shows interest in their maintenance in one week, I think I would like to bring them to Request for Deletion. On TR/materials, I am not sure currently ... perhaps it makes a sense to move TR/WSIS to that page. Or not. I asked Elian who are engaging promotion if she had any idea about that. As the discussion on the germanlanguage Wikipedia are, well, in german, here is some short information in english about all this. When Jimbo visited Germany in June, me and other members of the german community approached him about stable versions. After some discussion, he decided that it would be good to finally start with stable versions and, as this is a very fundamental change, to use one project as a testing ground before starting this everywhere. As you know, we are the lucky ones ;-) A few parameters were agreed upon, namely that it should be kept simple, in particular that what version is marked and what is not, should not be the result of some voting process and that we need to seperate two issues of stable versions: fighting vandalism and controlling the factual accuracy. Thus, a concept was then worked out, based on the discussions on meta, en and de and Brion was assigned with implementing it, which he is still busy with and it will still be some months before this actually goes life. A first decision was not to call this stable versions, as this is a term where everybody understands something different. Therefore, the following are the concepts: i) Unvandalized versions (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Gesichtete Versionen). An unvandalized version is a version of an article that has not been vandalized. The right to flag a version like this is given to accounts by an automatic process, based on the number of edits and the time passed since account creation. We will start the test with 30 edits/30 days. Versions can be flagged similar to the small changes mark with some features to make life easy, like automatic marking of articles newly created by users with this right. ii) Reviewed versions (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Geprüfte_Versionen). The meaning of this version is that the article contains no factual errors and that there are no misleading omissions, while not requiring any other form of completeness. The right to flag an article like this is given by a bureaucrat. This flag can also be removed again and the same version may be flagged by multiple users. We agree that the reviewers should come from an active portal in the wikipedia. The discussion on qualifications from within the wikipedia respectively from outside the wikipedia is going on. The notion of outside experts is also discussed. iii) Who sees what? Nothing is changed for logged in users. IPs see the latest reviewed or unvandalized versions, meaning that the reviewed version has no priority over an unvandalized version. If the version the IP sees is not the current one, a warning is shown with links to the current version. If no version of the article was ever flagged, a warning is shown. Note that this point is subject to MediaWiki settings, meaning that if in your project/wiki, this sounds like a contraproductive idea, you can turn it off, which is important for example in young wikipedias. "Wikimedia Foundation Website translators' FAQ"?

One idea about the Wikimedia Foundation website: if we have a document or a series of pages which indicates what and how often the Foundation website translators do or are expected, where we are working, even if it is veery short, is it helpful for us? Not only seeing many account requests whose submitters thought they would be working on the site directly (oh no ... never ... since we need stability for public relation) and saying (precisely c&p-ing) "eh, but ... we are working on meta?" like comment, but also just after contacted one possible translator, this idea struck me. How do you think? We need "WMF website editing/translating for dummies"? Or not? Wikimania 2007 - bidding process - deadline and process reminder

Hi all, There is much activity on the "unofficial" bids for Wikimania 2007, which is great, but none of the bids are "official" yet. It would grandly help if those who *really* intend to present their bid to the jury moved their city bid to the "official list" so that we know which bids are being pursued. For the first round, remember that we are aware that this is a *work in progress* and will need fine tuning, so do not be afraid to put up an official unfinished bid. I remind you all that the deadline is September 10th to make an official bid. No bid will be accepted as official after this date. For those of you who have hidden bids (I know there are some out there), please *do* make those public as soon as possible (ie. today would be great), it is very annoying both for the jury and the other participants to see a bid springing out of nowhere at the last minute and you are keeping potential helpers out by hiding your bid in a corner. Again, making a bid official does not prevent you from working on it, and bids will not be considered as "finished" until the very final deadline of September 24th, we know that it takes some time to get final approvals and fine tune things and deals. Requests for translation from an individual editor?

Hello, if you offer a help for translation to an individual editor who might speak your mother tongue but no other language, where and how do you prefer to be asked such requests? "Forward your mail to me"? "... to translation-l, good luck"? Or "go [[Translation requests on meta]]"? Or "give a look to [[m:Meta:Babylon]]? Where would you like to be asked a help? Recently I have been aware of demand of translation on individual basis; a certain editor needs to say something to the Foundation but he cannot speak in English, a certain editor wants to claim the "global" community but says nothing feeling the pressure "you need to speak in English" (note: it might happen, and I don't deny some feels such a tendency, not being aware of clamed multilingualism on Wikimedia project). As an individual volunteer whose native language is not English, who finds sometimes difficulties on communication with people whose language I cannot speak, I think I understand their frustration, and also possible loss from dyscommunication. Personally I am sympathy for them, and not only that, I think we will be happy to hear to them, specially if they would like to speak something about the Foundation a/o their project with sincere concerns. So I would like to set a clear and simple path between those editors who don't speak major languages like English to the extent they want by self and you translators. It might be not only the case of English, but also of other languages. Shortly, I would like to see editors not hesitant to post to foundation-l in their own language, when they think they need to do so. Not only to foundation-l, but to all other our multilingual mailinglist, including wiktionary-l, wikibook-l, wikisource-l ... So let us share your idea and preferences. Where is the best place to exchange such demand and supply in your opinion? Some news from Wikiversity Beta

[ crossposting on foundation-l, wikiversity-l & translators-l ] Hello, Wikiversity Beta is now 10 days old and I think the time has come to give some news. I have decided to organize it as a list of FAQ. Feel free to ask questions I have not thought about. This page is available in English at http://beta.wikiversity.org/wiki/Help:FAQ/En and will be available in French soon. * What is Wikiversity? --- Wikiversity is a new Wikimedia project [1] exploring ways to use the power of wiki to support online learning. This new project will be in beta phase during the first six months [2]. * What is Wikiversity Beta? --- Wikiversity Beta is a global platform aiming at coordinating Wikiversity projects in several languages [3]. This multilingual coordination intends to deal with Wikiversity's mission and general guidelines of the project's scope (for example, about original research). Wikiversity Beta is also a place where Wikiversity projects which don't have a subdomain yet can develop. --- In a nutshell, Wikiversity is both a meta-wiki and an incubator for Wikiversity projects. * How is it possible to have so many languages coexisting on Beta without it becoming a mess? --- Wikiversity Beta intends to take advantage of the input of its many members (not only English-speakers). Multilingual discussions should not only coexist, but live in symbiosis. A multilingual discussion system has been proposed to manage them [4] so non-English speakers can take part in discussions. Moreover, Beta is using the Language select feature [5] developped on Meta, which allows users to hide foreign languages on multilingual pages. * What about separate Wikiversity projects which already have their own subdomain? --- Those separate projects [6] are growing their way. However, their participants are strongly encouraged to take part into discussions about general guidelines that will apply to all Wikiversity projects. Moreover, they are encouraged to post reports [7] about their projects to let everybody know about how it grows. * What's next? --- Now we need people to take part in the discussions on Wikiversity Beta. People from existing separate projects and people willing to contribute to a future separate project should join the discussions and work together. People who do not speak English are encouraged to take part in discussions but we also need volunteer translators to translate the talk summaries [4]. * Your multilingual system will never work. It requires too many translators. --- If people really sum up their discussions, not only this will help them to focus on important things but it will not take much time to translate them. Ten days after Beta opening, its main page is already available in five languages. --- By the way, it is just a proposal. Hey, if everybody speaks english, very well, we won't have anything to translate. If the system does not work, at least we can say we tried. * For a coordination project, it would be much more practical if a single language of discussion is chosen. --- Of course it would be more practical; the question is: should we manage Beta the way that is easier for us English speakers or should we manage it the way everybody can take part in discussions about guidelines that will apply to all projects? * Wikiversity Beta Motto? --- The shorter, the better. If you want your ideas to reach people speaking other languages, write short and understandable summaries. Please feel free to ask questions and to make constructive comments.
