Hi Aphaia,
Translation ? With pleasure, BUT
You keep on talking about MAJOR languages, AND,
WE tiny little people (at least with Hungarians only about 10 million and a few million abroad) feel terribly inferior, the poor Finns, who are extremely active (it seems to me) can only master about 3 to 4 million amongst themselves, must feel even more rotten.
However, you great big majors, we love you all, all the same.
Material for translation ? Just keep them coming.
You had an office staff news item, which I translated but the coming of a modification was indicated, so I halted sending it out. Do I send it out now ? What was the change to it if any ?
Eloquence's board reorganisation announcement was stopped, because it was followed by an extensive report (on meta ?) This is partially translated; Is it full steam ahead with this ?
I looked at Zocky's page and yes, it seems a nice way of presenting requests.
All the best
Louis

Thank you for your proposal, Louis.
I happened to think similar about resolutions, giving them a serial number.
To avoiding confusion which version is expected to be translated, such
number could be helpful. I am not sure if it is good to have a
template on the foundation wiki, but it could easily done on meta or
somewhere we are going to make our requests.
To consider your proposal, I would forward your message to our mailing
list translators-l as proposed agenda item.
If you have any idea, please send it to translators-l.
Thanks again,

News
* Transcom is launched
*: Translation subcommittee (Transcom) is now caring for Translation
related to Wikimedia Foundation. It is one of five subcommittee of
Communication committee and created in August, split from former
Promotion & Translation subcommittee, which issued the first issue of
this newsletter. Current members are Aphaia (Naoko), Sabine
(User:SabineCretella) and Jd (Jean-Denis).
* Translation coordinators per language
*: A team of volunteering coordinators is now launched. Translation
Coordinators per language (TCPL) are approved by and expected to work
with Transcom. Instead Transcom, TCPLs, if exists for a given
language, will oversee the translation process in their own
language(s), more deeply involved into their language community. See
further http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/TCPL.
* Transbabel
*: Transbabel template (formally Translator template in the following
language combinations) helps you to show your interest to the
community. Each template shows a language set of two in ISO 639-3 code
with information about source and destination of your translation; for
example translator eng->fra means a translator who put English into
French language. You can find other translators using it.
* Zocky's machine - "translation request" templates
*: Another innovation. User:Zocky created a support system on meta to
help translation, specially to organize a massive translation request
into numbers. It reduces workload of translation coordinators greatly
and helps translators finding where to work with well designed
"status" feature. Recently it seems to become de facto standard of
translation organizing tool on meta.wikimedia.org. The usage could be
seen at Election results 2006.
(http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Election_results_2006)
* WMF website overhaul
*: Wikimedia Foundation website has not been well maintained at some
pages. A massive overhaul attempt has begun to improve this situation.
Outdated translation pages were turned into redirect as interim
remedy. We hope to set them up again in a foreseeable future. Also we
are going to provide translations in major languages for all major
contents (See the below, "Core lang list revised).
* Wikimania 2007 website is launched
*: The official website for Wikimania 2007 was launched. Hsiang-Tai
(User:Htchien) will oversee communications for conference, including
translation, in general. No translation requests are found currently.
In past two conferences, requests came in the midst of February. You
are invited to join relevant discussions at wikimania-l(a)wikimedia.org.
* Transcom activities
*: Besides regular coordination of requests and recruiting people,
Transcom has worked to aim to clarify its work flow and prepare the
condition which will allow us to work as efficiently as possible.
*:
** Core lang list is revised
**: [[Communications subcommittees/Trans/core langs|Core language
list]] is a list of languages whose translations the current Transcom
concentrates its coordination activity. Core lang list is determined
considering several aspects, including the size of speaker populations
and the activity of its Wikimedia project. It is its first revision
since the list was created in April 2006. The major change is addition
of Russian language due to its Wikimedia project activities; Russian
Wikipedia is now over 100,000 articles and Russian language is
spoken/understood in several countries in East Europe and Central
Asia. The list will be periodically reviewed and revised, if
necessarily.
**:
** Transcom Goals 2006/Q4 and more
**: Transcom has now trimester goals:(goals description). Having goals
aims to make it clear what Transcom is concerned and to help Transcom
work efficiently, to concentrate the biggest needs. In 2007, Transcom
will have goals in two terms: annual and trimester.
Thank yous
From this June to October, many translation efforts have been made for
disseminating information across the project, hence the world.
Wikimania 2006 websites had contents in over 10 language, including
Azerbaijani and Turkish language, when the conference was opened.
Board Election held in the early of this fall was informed in over 30
languages and its result are still being translated into new languages
weekly even after one month passed. Many editors worked on translation
and some of them motivated other editors to join the task on their
local communities. And the Foundation website: responding to the need
of overhaul, many translators are involved, both veteran editors and
newly participating ones.
As well translators, we Transcom would like to appreciate people who
are working on helpful tools, editors who create new version of
Transbabel, who improve templates used on translated materials.
Specially we would like thank Zocky for his invention, a system of
templates (sometimes called "Zocky's machine") for creating and
maintaining translation platform for a particular topic. He created it
for Wikimania translation and it was proved very helpful for
organizing translation in occasion of Election result release, and now
for Wikimedia:Current_staff translation. Transcom will apply this new
system for other translation gradually.
Thank you for your continuous cooperation, it is always our joy to
work with you!

Hello, all
a translation drive seems to have come ;)
WMF website
need to update
- Board of Trustees translations (esm fr it, ja, nl, zh)
- Wikimedia bylaws translations (de, fr, it)
- Template:News-xx
Also there is a press release. You may translate and disseminate it to
your local press.
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Press_releases/Wikimedia_Foundation_boa…
Sorry, I have now no time to reorganize TR. Could someone care for it?
In my opinion this series of translations is worthy to be ranked #1 on
Current requests (Template:Translation requests/curreqs).
I will be absent almost in the next week. Sabine Cretella and other
experienced translation coordinators will answer your questions
expectedly.
Your translation of the forwarded message into your community will be
great, too.
See you at the next week meeting hopefully,

I have been asked to announce this in my new formal officer role as
Executive Secretary:
The Wikimedia Board met in Frankfurt, Germany on October 22,

Jimmy Wales said: "I nominated Florence to be the chair of the
foundation in recognition of her outstanding service for the past few
years and her unsurpassed passion for our goals. Having such a
trusted community representative elected as our new chair demonstrates
the growth and strength of our organization."

For reference, the resolution:
The Board resolved that, from the 21 of October and for a term of one

Hello Kizu,
I've translated the Foundation office staff text, but have trouble with substituting the English text with the Hungarian.
I don't want to mess up the photos, so well arranged, but I am not yet too familiar with the switches used in the programming.
During my effort to put all the translation into the appropriate page WP has also forgotten my password and refused to enter me, so when I was trying to sign the translation, unfinished, as it was, the whole lot has disappeared from sight, so I'll have to try later, this evening perhaps. Thank you for your other mail, not yet read, as I've got to leave the house now, goiung shopping;

Hello all,
thanks to your labor, we are now going to have new pages on foundation
wiki: language versions of Wikimedia:Current staff, information of
Wikimedia employees.
Now several pages are waiting for copyediting: Es, Fr, Pt, Zh. You
could help it. If there is no your language version, please start.
Fi is ready and with one last step; page title in Finnish ...
Yes, each page needs to be named in its language. Put translation
besides of the link at the list on TR/WMF#Staffs.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Translation_requests/WMF#Staffs
Without any intervention, pages will be available on foundationwiki on
November 1.
Cheers,

Hello again, Sabine,
Thanks again for the explications.
I have now extracted the zip files, I looked at all the OmegaT files, browsed through the instruction manual.
I understand that extracting the spell and grammar checker in the target language would be highly adevisable (and I take it that these I'll find on my system disk.)
There are two things not yet clear (at the moment)
1. How do I start up OmegaT, and
2. How do I start, ie import a textfile (.doc file in MS word) into the OmegaT environment.
Kind regards, Louis

That is strange ... well you can also download it from my server where I
have a copy of RC10 for Windows including Java.
http://wordsandmore.org/Downloads/omtrc10java.zip
> 2. When I tried to download the programme without Java I received
> a list of 'suppliers' of the programme in different languages

OmegaT does not install Java itself - only the bundel-version coms with
the bits and pieces of Java. By clicking on OmegaT.bat in the subfolder
you start the program without installing it on your computer: so no
entries in the registry and no problems when there is an update, since
you don't need to install it. OmegaT, as much as I remember, has no
localisation in Hungarian for now - so it would load with English as
default.
> When I looked for Java on my computer, to my surprise I could not find it
Well normally that should be installed separately if you use the version
without Java. You can get it from here:
http://java.com
(sorry for some reason I cannot force the website to show up in English
... my System is in German so I suppose it automatically reads that info).
> Oh, one more q: do I just type the address of the chatline on my
> address line to get to it ?
Well you need, for example Chatzilla installed if you use Firefox as
browser - or other chat software. If you don't want to install this you
can also go through various web interfaces:
* http://www.bitshuffle.org/cgiirc/
* http://java.freenode.net/index.php
* http://brujula5.brujula.net/cgi-bin/cgi/irc.cgi
If you have problems in using these, please let me know which one you
are trying to use so I can help with descriptions.
Off to bed :-) Good night!
