Hello again, I just want to amend part of my last message (oops, it was held over from previous ones) and make you all aware that we're about to file a huge translation request. - but THERE IS NO NEED TO TRANSLATE BANNERS. There will be multiple other major translation requests throughout the campaing and we'll need your help with those too. WIKIMEDIA 2010 FUNDRAISER: Call for Translations!

Hello Wikimedians, my name is Sam and I am working for the Wikimedia Foundation during the 2010 Fundraiser as the liaison between language communities and the Foundation. This year's fundraiser is intended to be a collaborative and global effort; we recognize that banner messages which may perform well in the United States don't necessarily translate well, or appeal to all audiences. And no one knows better what will appeal to specific language communities than their own readers and editors. We're currently asking volunteer chapters and language communities to help us maximize the potential of the fundraiser by getting deeply involved in the messaging, planning, and execution of this year’s fundraiser. We want everyone in the community to get involved to make sure we have a fundraiser that represents all of us. Our first steps are to suggest and translate banners, and start a discussion in your community. What can we do to improve Fundraising and localize messages? On the Fundraising meta page we've started the banner suggestion process, analysis of tested banners, and recruiting volunteers. I'm here both to answer questions as they come up and to listen to your feedback about what types of messaging will work and won't work. We'll constantly be tweaking or changing things, based on your input, to try to make everything as perfect as possible for the readers and donors in your language and region. Use the talk pages on meta, talk to your local communities, talk to others, talk to us, and add your feedback to the proposed messages as well. I look forward to working with you during this year's fundraiser, please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or questions about the fundraiser this year. Hi all , I am Jason and I am translating Wiki-guideline into Chinese. I have translated to page 7, there are directions according to the Wiki-homepage in English. and I suddenly have an idea: What if we capture various home page according to each language? I consider that may be easier for those who don't understand English to understand instructions. But I don't know how to make picture inclined like the original version of the guideline do. What do you say? Will you offer assistence? Thank you! Jason

This page welcomes people to the fundraising pages, gives them information about the process, and shows where they can help. Call for translations: Subtitles for Wikipedia Videos

Dear translation community, I'd like to make a renewed call for translation for the Wikipedia videos that we released last month. See background here: http://blog.wikimedia.org/blog/2010/09/24/four-videos-of-wikipedias-volunte… We already have subtitle translations in a dozen or so languages, but we need many more :-). Here's how it works: 1) You'll find the videos at: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:September_2010_Wikipedia_Videos 2) Click any of the video file names to get to the description pages. On the description page, you will see a list of "Available closed captioning files". 3) Click the English language source of a subtitle file. Click "Edit". 4) Copy all the text into the clipboard. 5) In the address bar, replace "en" with your Wikimedia language code. So, for example, http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=TimedText:Wikipedia_User_Nam… becomes http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=TimedText:Wikipedia_User_Nam… for a German translation. Load the new address. You can now paste in the English original, and start translating line by line (be careful not to remove the time markers). If there is a translation in your language already, please help to proofread/improve it. Liane Al-Ghusain (on CC) is a communications intern with the Wikimedia Foundation. She will import the subtitles into the YouTube copies of the videos. To allow us to import them as a batch, please complete your translations by _OCTOBER 15_. We will import them the following week. If you've updated an existing translation, please let Liane know so she can import it. Thank you very much for your help. Translating "Welcome to Wikipedia"

Hello all, I'd like to bring to your attention that Bence Damokos successfully completed the first localization of the "Welcome to Wikipedia" reference guide that was developed through the Wikimedia Foundation bookshelf project, an effort to develop a library of public outreach resources. This is noteworthy because the guide is a complex document made for print, using the Scribus desktop publishing application, and this principally validates the pipeline used for the bookshelf materials. We're maintaining an index of all materials produced so far here: http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bookshelf This also has links to localization guidelines. Please also note that by no means do materials listed there have to originate with WMF, or in English, and the latest Italian WikiGuida is already listed there. Fundraising_2010 outreach

Howdy translators! I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce some of the Foundation's fundraising staff to you and explain how things are going to work with this year's fundraiser (currently scheduled to start November 7). Basically, what we're planning on doing for this fundraiser is not just "translate" the fundraising messages, but also "localize" them. We realize that not all messages work the best in every language,culture or region so in addition to translating the English messages, we will also have the option of other messages specific to your language or region... and who knows better how to get people to donate in your language and your region than you do? :) We really need your help this year to come up with local messages yourself and also to help get the rest of your local community involved. This is where the fundraising team comes in. This fundraising season myself, Keegan Peterzell, and Deniz Gültekin are the ones who have been tasked with reaching out to every single wiki to try and get local participation in the fundraiser planning and implementation. We're here both to answer questions as they come up and to listen to your feedback about what types of messaging will work and won't work. We'll constantly be tweaking or changing things, based on your input, to try to make everything as perfect as possible for the readers and donors in your language and region.
