Many thanks for everyones quick replies! Ive managed to get it working
after some help from more than a few people and some directions.
I followed the directions exactly as listed on:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CharInsert
First download the "CharInsert.php" and place it into a new folder
"CharInsert" in the Extensions sub-directory.
Then I download the file "Wikibits.js", replacing the existing one in the
"/Skins/Common" folder.
Finally open and modify the "LocalSettings.php" to include, at the bottom,
the line:
require_once("$IP/extensions/CharInsert/CharInsert.php");
and then replace the existing file on the server with the newly modified
one.
Next the Wiki Sysop must go manually edit the "MediaWiki:Edittools" page on
_their own_ Wiki itself and copy the existing source code from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Edittools
The "MediaWiki:Edittools" page is normally locked and can only be unlocked
by the Wiki Sysop. (many thanks Jason!)
----------
Unfortunately I still havent had any luck with the extra edit buttons along
the top of the edit row of the edit page. I copied the Common.css from
Wikipedias MediaWiki:Common.css page and pasted it into a text document,
saving it as a .css. I then replaced it with the Common.css on my
server. I noticed however that MediaWiki doesnt install with Common.js. I
went ahead and created it by taking the source code from Wikipedias
Common.js and then placed it in the same directory as the Common.css but
so far I havent seen any changes. Any recommendations?
But, many thanks again! Your help is really appreciated.
Chris

All,
I have a problem. I keep getting this error below and the only way to
fix it seems to be to constantly empty out the objectcache table
through my MySQL tools. Any suggestions?
-----
A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in
the software. The last attempted database query was:
(SQL query hidden)
from within function "MediaWikiBagOStuff::_doinsert". MySQL returned
error "1114: The table 'objectcache' is full (localhost)".

Thanks,
Chris
Figured it out. Nevermind. I needed to make some setting changes in the config file and all is well.

Subject: [Mediawiki-l] FCKeditor Upload issue
Hello,
I attached an image with a picture of my problem. I don't get the browse button like I did on the previous version of FCKeditor. I created a new mediawiki (1.8.2) and added FCKeditor (2.3.2) as the editor. For some reason, I can't get the image upload to work properly. Everything else works fine.
Thanks for the help.

Hello again,
Per this list's recommendations, I downloaded the LdapAuthentication
plugin 1.1b and followed the documentation at:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/LDAP_Authenticationhttp://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=2830&action=view
I added the PHP code to the LocalSettings.php file. Authentication
appears to work. However, the logon never redirects to the main page.
With $wgLDAPDebug = 2, I get the following output:
Entering validDomain
User is using a valid domain
Setting domain as: abctech.com
Entering getCanonicalName
Username isn't empty.
Munged username: Jwgoerlich
Entering userExists
Entering authenticate
Entering Connect
This looks about right, but no go. Any suggestions?
J Wolfgang Goerlich
The PHP code that I added to the LocalSettings is:
require_once( 'LdapAuthentication.php' );
$wgAuth = new LdapAuthenticationPlugin();
$wgLDAPDomainNames = array("abctech.com");
$wgLDAPServerNames = array("abctech.com"=>"dc7.abctech.com");
$wgLDAPUseLocal = false;
$wgLDAPUseSSL = array ("abctech.com"=>false);
$wgLDAPUseTLS = array ("abctech.com"=>true);
$wgLDAPSearchStrings = array("abctech.com"=>"Abctech\\USER-NAME");
$wgLDAPDebug = 2;
Fatal Error
When i try to open http://mydomain/index.php?title=Spezial:LifeMarks i got
the following error:
Fatal error: Cannot access protected property OutputPage::$mParserOptions in
/wiki/extensions/LifeMarks.php on line 431
which is the following line in the php-script:
$tempoutput = $localParser->parse($complete_output, $wgTitle,
$wgOut->mParserOptions, false);
I have the same problem in the following line, when using the tag LIFEMARKS
or LIFEMARKSLIST:
$temp_output = $localParser->parse($processedline, $wgTitle,
$wgOut->mParserOptions, false);
Could someone help me? I don't know, what's the problem.
Best regards
Tom

I know, there is a possibility to avoid to show "index.php" in the URL of
our wiki, for example:
http://www.zum.de/wiki/index.php/Hauptseite
That should be shown as in Wikipedia:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauptseite
I was searching for an explanation, but couldn't find it. Where can I find
it? - Or could someone explain it to me?

Hello,
I have been experimenting with customizing MediaWiki for the past
couple of months using an inexpensive hosted account. Suddenly, this
past week, my browser (Firefox) went completely blank (white) when
accessing the Main Page. I was able to access the site using Safari,
but only the Main Page ---the rest was inoperable.
Suspecting my code modifications introduced the problem, I opened a
2nd account, with a new hosting provider, and installed an unmodified
MediaWiki, from scratch. To my surprise, the problem was duplicated
---although this time Firefox goes blank (white) when the "edit"
button is selected and it can't be accessed by Safari at all. I re-
installed without success.
I have been hosting MediaWiki with providers running later-versions
of PHP and MySQL, in order to match the System Requirements oulined
on MediaWiki.org. These hosting providers, in the minority, are also
quite cheap. Following is a summary of the server software on each
account:
Account 1:
OS: Linux
PHP Ver.: 5.1.4
MySQL Ver.: 5.0.27-standard
Apache Ver.: 1.3.36 (Unix)
Account 2:
OS: FreeBSD
PHP Ver.: 5.2.0
MySQL Ver.: 5.0.27-log
Apache Ver.: 1.3.37 (Unix)
Is there risk of running later versions of PHP/MySQL with the latest
MediaWiki? Is there an optimal balance between MediaWiki and server
software versions?
Insights are appreciated.
Best,
James
