MediaWiki Blank Screen
by James Capp 13 Dec '06

13 Dec '06

Hello, I have been experimenting with customizing MediaWiki for the past couple of months using an inexpensive hosted account. Suddenly, this past week, my browser (Firefox) went completely blank (white) when accessing the Main Page. I was able to access the site using Safari, but only the Main Page ---the rest was inoperable. Suspecting my code modifications introduced the problem, I opened a 2nd account, with a new hosting provider, and installed an unmodified MediaWiki, from scratch. To my surprise, the problem was duplicated ---although this time Firefox goes blank (white) when the "edit" button is selected and it can't be accessed by Safari at all. I re- installed without success. I have been hosting MediaWiki with providers running later-versions of PHP and MySQL, in order to match the System Requirements oulined on MediaWiki.org. These hosting providers, in the minority, are also quite cheap. Following is a summary of the server software on each account: Account 1: OS: Linux PHP Ver.: 5.1.4 MySQL Ver.: 5.0.27-standard Apache Ver.: 1.3.36 (Unix) Account 2: OS: FreeBSD PHP Ver.: 5.2.0 MySQL Ver.: 5.0.27-log Apache Ver.: 1.3.37 (Unix) Is there risk of running later versions of PHP/MySQL with the latest MediaWiki? Is there an optimal balance between MediaWiki and server software versions? Insights are appreciated. Best, James

Upgrade from 1.6.7 to 1.8.2 -- error message when I edit a page
by khuffman＠NGS.ORG 13 Dec '06

13 Dec '06

I upgraded from 1.6.7 to 1.8.2 running update.php from a cron job on my server. It looked as though everything worked OKAY except when I edit a page I get the follow error: Page cannot display and when I refresh my browser, I receive the following database error: A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: (SQL query hidden) from within function "Block::load". MySQL returned error "1054: Unknown column 'ipb_anon_only' in 'where clause' (localhost)". Any help?

Issues with Internet explorer on different subnets??
by Niedziela, Jennifer 13 Dec '06

13 Dec '06

We have an implementation of MediaWiki that is exhibiting periodic failures when people from certain subnets attempt to access wiki content via Internet Explorer. The problem is usually confined to IE (versions 5 and 6), and the problem is typically limited to only one of the subnets at a time. Any notions of what might be happening here? Thanks, Jen

Text cmd= causes 404 error
by Ian Handel 13 Dec '06

13 Dec '06

Hi, If I edit a page to include the text cmd= and try to preview or save changes I get the following error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /wiki/index.php on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. Any suggestions regarding the cause or fix for this problem would be greatly appreciated, Thanks Ian Handel # MediaWiki: 1.6.8 # PHP: 4.4.3 (cgi) # MySQL: 4.1.21-standard

Help Adding the new edit buttons and character box
by Christopher Merwin 12 Dec '06

12 Dec '06

Hi, I recently set up my own wiki and I was a little surprised that the additional edit buttons and the special character box which appear on the Wikipedia Edit Pages were not available in the standard MediaWiki installation. I've spent a few hours looking on line and through Meta to find either the java code or a script file or anything on how to add these features but with no luck (what I found was either conflicting or not available). There are a few Mediawiki-L posts from 2005 which discuss it but not in any detail. Does any one possibly know how to add the additional extra edit tool bar buttons throughout your Wiki (not just on user-pages) and how to include the 'special character box'? I'm new to MediaWiki and I would really love any feedback or thoughts anyone might have! Thank you very much for your help, Chris

The function debug_backtrace crashes MW18
by Harald Groven 11 Dec '06

11 Dec '06

Some users (including me) have previously reported strange "500 internal server error". I finally found out that this is because of a bug caused by debug_backtrace that was introduced in MW18. (seem only to crash certain server configurations) http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8041 When I commented out all lines containing debug_backtrace, the 500 errors disappeared, but the page layout of Monobook started to behave strangly. The navigation menu at the left was hidden by the main page content. I had to downgrade my site to <MW18 to make it work. How can I avoid breaking MW18? Or do I have to wait for a future patch? -- Harald

Limiting anonymous edits to intranet
by Michael Brenner 11 Dec '06

11 Dec '06

Hi everybody, we've got a MediaWiki installation on our university. For fighting spam anonymous edits are disallowed with the "poor solution"[1] method. But there might be a little bit better solution with the attached code[2] to only disallow anonymous edits outside our intranet. Since non of use is a wiki expert we're wondering can this do any harm to our database? Thanks in advance - mik [2]suggestion for LocalSettings.php: ... if( ( ip2long($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']) & ip2long('255.255.0.0') ) != ip2long('111.222.0.0') ) { $wgGroupPermissions['*']['edit'] = false; } ... how to delete old versions of articles?
by Moritz Karbach 11 Dec '06

11 Dec '06

Hi, I'd like to delete all old versions of an article. Is there a conveniant way to do so? I already tried to delete the article and to create it again, but MW offers me an undo-option, and all the old versions are still accessable... Cheers, - Moritz

Putting a special page in a category...
by Vernon Thommeret 11 Dec '06

11 Dec '06

I'm working on my wiki, and I've created a special page, and then added the line: $wgOut->addWikiText("[[Category:Dining]]"); at the end of my extension. The page works fine and the category code shows up when I view the page, but if I go to the category, the special page isn't listed. Is there any way to get this to work? Thanks!
