Morning!
I am building a web site for a family member who is in the process
of completing a PhD and MediaWiki looks like the ideal CMS to use
as they will be able to update their own web site (delegation is
always important :-)
Two questions:
1) There may be a need to have certain pages in multiple languages.
Is the best way to do this for a small site is to add a language
identifier to the page title eg:
here is the CV in [[CV.en|English]] or in [[CV.nl|Dutch]].
Is there a way to do this and still have a more readable title eg
"English CV" rathern than "CV.en"?
2) I see from the LocalSettings.php that it is possible to prevent
access to certain pages for users who are not logged in. Do I
need to list all the pages I want blocked or is it possible
to do wildcards eg internal*
TIA
James
The advice in the subject line is correct. Users should never be
deleted from the table for another reason; you leave a lot of messy
references to them lurking about which really does confuse the hell
out of the software.
MediaWiki does not support the deletion of users, and likely never will.

You will have to modify the extension to feed the included text
through the wiki parser.

This would seem to be beyond your scope, then. It sounds like an
interesting project, but I have no extra time to help you right now!
Perhaps someone else with an interest will want to craft a solution.

I have two new extensions to through into the mix:
1) Graphviz embedding extension. It generates Graphviz
(http://www.graphviz.org) images from embedded markup. Although one
already exists, I couldn't find the source code, so I wrote a new one.
2) Graph generating SpecialPage. This extension allows you to query
your wiki for both XML and Graphviz markup of subsets of your wiki. As
an added bonus, the content can be transparently included in pages so
dynamic graphs (images) of relations can be generated.
The extensions can be downloaded from
http://opensource.case.edu/projects/MediaWikiHacks/
A live example of these extensions is the Case Western Reserve
University Wiki (http://wiki.case.edu). Some links of interest are:
http://wiki.case.edu/Special:Graphshttp://wiki.case.edu/Category:Staffhttp://wiki.case.edu/Category:ITS_Employeeshttp://wiki.case.edu/CaseWiki:Categories
As you can see, for all smaller category pages, a graph of the category
layout is automatically generated. (Yes, I know about the font issues).
This extension is a work in progress and is a little rough around the
edges. I welcome any input others should provide and am open to
suggestions for future possibilities.

Hi, I created about a dozen wikis to use as:
- draft websites
- info storage
After doing a big delete-the c drive-and-start-over, I've found it too
difficult atm to transfer the files to a new set of wikis.
But there's certain data I really need from the old files.
Does anyone know how i can read the raw data in my old wikis?
Really appreciate the help cos this data is quite important to me!
Thanks.
Hi,
I'm having some problems with my wiki installation.
I can't explain what happens but check out
http://www.wyger.nl/usr/antichrist/ and press set up the wiki. What can I do about that?
Also where can I download language packs?

Is it possible to make a copy of the MonoBook skin, and then rename it to
something else? I want to copy the MonoBook skin, and then start modifying
it from there.
So far, I know that you have to copy the MonoBook folder and rename it to
the skin name. You then have to copy Monobook.php and rename it to the skin
name. You then have to change the lines -
class SkinChristmas extends SkinTemplate {
/** Using monobook. */
function initPage( &$out ) {
SkinTemplate::initPage( $out );
$this->skinname = 'Christmas';
$this->stylename = 'Christmas';
$this->template = 'ChristmasTemplate';
}
}
In this example, it would make a skin called Christmas. Where do you go
from here? What has to be modified in SkinTemplate.php and SkinPHPTal.php?
Hi all,
I'm really sorry to bother you with such a question but I can’t seem
to find an answer (even in the list archives).
This morning I tried to connect to my wiki and I receive a violent :
Warning: main() [function.main]: open_basedir restriction in effect.
File(./normal/UtfNormalUtil.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (/
var/www/tmp/dedalus:/var/www/users/dedalus:/var/www/dns/
dedalus.freezee.org:/usr/share/php) in /var/www/users/dedalus/wiki/

wiki:/var/www/users/dedalus/wiki/includes:/var/www/users/dedalus/wiki/
languages') in /var/www/users/dedalus/wiki/includes/
GlobalFunctions.php on line 32
Now, I tought that by upgrading to 1.5.0, I’d be able to resolve the
problem (seeing that 1.4.3 isn’t compatible with PHP 5.0.5 and all),
but it didn’t work…
So I tried to reinstall everything but during the setup phase of the
installation I now receive:
Warning: main() [function.main]: open_basedir restriction in effect.
File(./includes/Defines.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (/var/
www/tmp/dedalus:/var/www/users/dedalus:/var/www/dns/

var/www/users/dedalus/wiki/includes:/var/www/users/dedalus/wiki/
languages') in /var/www/users/dedalus/wiki/config/index.php on line 122
I really don’t know what to do next…
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Sacco.
Hello,
i have a problem with MediaWiki 1.5.4.
I have added an Email address to the Admin user account. Also i've
checked the options to get an Email on every change in the Wiki.
But i do not receive any notifications on site changes. I've tested it
with other user accounts. Not with the Admin itself.
If I change the Email address of the Admin user i get a confirmation
Email. I guess the sending of a mail should work.
What's the matter about that?
Kind regards and a happy new year,
Claus Malter
How do i change the directory where to upload files with the upload dialog?
is is possible to upload files to another server?
thank you for answering
anselm
