Morning!
I am building a web site for a family member who is in the process
of completing a PhD and MediaWiki looks like the ideal CMS to use
as they will be able to update their own web site (delegation is
always important :-)
Two questions:
1) There may be a need to have certain pages in multiple languages.
Is the best way to do this for a small site is to add a language
identifier to the page title eg:
here is the CV in English or in Dutch.
Is there a way to do this and still have a more readable title eg
"English CV" rathern than "CV.en"?
2) I see from the LocalSettings.php that it is possible to prevent
access to certain pages for users who are not logged in. Do I
need to list all the pages I want blocked or is it possible
to do wildcards eg internal*
TIA

How does commons.wikipedia work? Can this be imitated in other
people's own installation of MediaWiki? Is there a technical document
under meta explaining this, I can't find any.

Is there any RSS support for MediaWiki - i.e. generating a .rss stream for a site?
I am aware of an extension that parses/embeds rss files within MediaWiki pages with <rss>url</rss>
but I want the inverse: to allow others to use RSS to see what's new on my MediaWiki site.

I have had another go with this today but the same message keeps coming back
about permissions
I can't see what other permissions the maintenance scripts need

Thanks for replying, I hadn't filled out the details in adminsettings.php.
I created a new database user and put the account details in that file and
re-ran the rebuild script, it came back with a message saying the user I had
created didn't have permission.
I gave the user the following privileges
SELECT
INSERT
UPDATE
DELETE
INDEX
ALTER
Are there any other privileges it needs?
Thanks

Make sure AdminSettings.php is present and contains correct username and
password settings as per AdminSettings.sample.
Note that rebuildIndex.php requires ALTER TABLE permission (iirc) to
drop and re-add the fulltext index.

Hi There,
How can I have the Wiki upload Word / Excel / Powerpoint documents? It appears not to be supported.
Thanks.
Best regards,
Marcel

Are you refering to SpecialPage::getDescription()? (Which, by default,
calls wfMsg() with the lowercase version of the page name. So if your
special page is called SomeSpecialPageIWrote, you would want to look
at MediaWiki:somespecialpageiwrote.)

That appears to be for the HTML <title> tags. I assume you're talking
about the title at the top of the page.

That's entirely possible. However, this is not an authoritative source
in the areas of mental stability. ;)

$wgShowSQLErrors=false; in LocalSettings.php. The error won't be shown
any more (though it will still happen).

Can anyone help here?
I talked to the company hosting my site, and they said that they do
not know if, or when, they will be upgrading their mysql version.

I documented the steps to add AdSense to MediaWiki 1.4, as I suspect others
will also find this useful. If you're not familiar with it, AdSense pays
you ~70% of the click-though revenues Google receives by placing ads on your
page.

Hello,
I had mediawiki 1.4.6 installed on a machine which just had the
mediawiki directory hanging off the webserver documentroot. I moved
this to a production server and onto a vhost and changed my
LocalSettings.php over, but all my links are still broken and I'm not
sure why.
I copied the database as per http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/
How_to_move_a_MediaWiki_Database without issue. I can get to the
main page of my installation, no problem but whenever I try to click
on any of the links which were copied with the database from the old
server, the URL has /mediawiki in it, even though LocalSettings.php
has: $wgScriptPath = "";. I'm somewhat stumped. From what
I've read, it should be as easy as making sure the $wgScriptPath
variable is set correctly, but I may be horribly wrong and there may
be something else quite involved that I'm missing.
Any ideas?
Hi Everyone -
I just installed the Mediawiki on my (Debian) server. The installation & configuration went perfectly, without a hitch. But, upon completion, when I went to the main page, I saw this error:
Security Alert! The PHP CGI cannot be accessed directly.
This PHP CGI binary was compiled with force-cgi-redirect enabled. This means that a page will only be served up if the REDIRECT_STATUS CGI variable is set, e.g. via an Apache Action directive.
For more information as to why this behaviour exists, see the manual page for CGI security.
For more information about changing this behaviour or re-enabling this webserver, consult the installation file that came with this distribution, or visit the manual page.
I know little about PHP (but lots about some other languages!) and I'm not quite sure how do go about fixing this. A Google search wasn't useful and I wasn't able to find a search function on the mailing list archive so I can see if someone has asked this before.
What do you recommend I do?
Thank you so much for your help!!!!
