Hi, I changed the index.php file to use this instead: $conf->IP = dirname( dirname( __FILE__ ) ); and I found a function in the 1&1 FAQ (http://faq.1and1.com/scripting_languages_supported/php/8.html) that stores PHP error messages from the 1&1 server. What is that about 'root' - I didn't fill that in on the form (I supplied the database login).

Additional Navigational Bar

Hi, I would like to add an additional navigational bar underneath the existing ones. I have tried editing xhtml_slim.pt, and no changes show. In fact, I don't even think my wikipedia is using xhtml_slim.pt, because the donations link is specified in the template, and does not show on the page. Please advise. -Beth

Ok two answers that sort of conflict... Is it file:// or file:/// ? Introduction

Hello, all. My name is Craig Hartel, and I am new to MediaWiki and relatively new to wikis in general. I am one of two people responsible for building reference documentation for WordPress (http://wordpress.org) which is an open-source blogging tool. We are currently in the process of building our wiki by harvesting from our old wiki (phpWiki I believe) and by twisting arms of community members to write documentation for us. I am already very impressed with MediaWiki, and am excited by all of the possibilities of how it can be used. I am a bit overwhelmed right now with trying to set up some guidelines for how we want the wiki to work, and with issues of creating templates and related wiki assets. Although I am comfortable with CSS, I am also trying to come up with some site-specific customizations. If any of you might have some links to to help me and my team to get started, it would be very much appreciated. I have been poking around quite a bit in the MetaWiki, so I'm armed with enough knowledge to really make a mess! ;) Our wiki is not officially online, but if you would like to have a peek at it, you can find it at http://codex.wordpress.org/ . We are currently working to decide how to best use namespaces, as we wish to maximize searchability and minimize sub-pages. Any advice you may have would be great. Changing the main page title and customising the menu on the LHS

Dear All, I now have a working MediaWiki installation and have started customising it for our site. However, the developer docs seem somewhat sparse and there are a few changes I need to make. Not to be deterred I decided to have a bit of a hack around, and grepped through the source code for the items of interest. This yielded two possible files in which I could make changes: {mediawikidir}/languages/Language.php {mediawikidir}/templates/xhtml_slim.pt So, anyway I tried changing "Main page" to something else ("Welcome" as it goes), in both places, refreshed the front page in my browser and.... well, basically nothing appeared to happen. I also tried to change the left-hand menu text (Community portal) etc with the same result. Obviously I'm missing something, but I'd be extremely grateful if somebody could tell me what that is. Did you chmod the images folder to 777? If not it may timeout because you don't have enough access to the file...Try that and see if it fixes it. -- Gaurav Chaturvedi

Troubleshooting upload

Hi there, I have setup a Wikimedia installation for a possible use within europa.* Usenet hierarchy steering group and as a FAQ and charter repository. The documentation is fairly complete, so I managed to get all the things up and running with the sole exception of the upload capabilities. Can you give me a few hints about that? I've already checked: * The 'images' directory in /usr/local/mediawiki/ has the same owner as apache runs as; * Tried to chmod 777 it :o ; * Created a tmp inside it, global /tmp is writeable; * Php is not in safe mode; * LocalSettings.php is as required by the documentation: ** $wgUploadPath correct; ** $wgUploadDirectory correct; ** $wgDisableUploads = false; ** $wgUseImageResize = true; ** $wgUseImageMagick = true; ** $wgImageMagickConvertCommand = "/usr/bin/convert"; * I actually get to upload page, fill in the file, check the copyright: no error is displayed or logged and the page is loaded again. Also looked in syslog files and httpd logs: nothing. Thank you for your help Mario
