Michelle, thanks, but there is nothing (literally) on those pages when I go
to them ~ i.e. all I see is this:
YourWiki:All system messages
>From WikiED
(There is currently no text in this page)
I don't want to modify any existing link, I want to insert a new one in and
I am still stumped.

If you know where it's going you can just use the URL.
-Thanks Brion, I can see how I could do that in the xhtml_slim.pt
file...just insert a line like this?
<li><a href="http://www.wikied.org/email.php" alt="Contact Form">Contact
WikiED</a></li>
What I don't understand is what I need to do with the SkinPHPtal.php file,
or language.php to get the link above to show. I tried just inserting the
url in the slim file, but nothing changes in the nav bar. Please excuse my
ignorance.

You know how on the Wikipedia.com encyclopedia they have those nice
grey boxes with dashed borders to show code? How do you make those?
I know how to make regular tables..but is there any predefined
tablecode for that specific table, or do I have to adjust the XHTML
style for each and every table to get that exact look? Thanks!

Hello, list,
I would ask you to help me set up MediaWiki on my webhost if you will.. The
server is w2k3. After clickig "set-up" i get this info:
--Checking environment...
--PHP 4.3.3: ok
--Warning: PHP's register_globals option is enabled. MediaWiki will work
correctly, but this setting increases your exposure to potential security
vulnerabilities in PHP-based software running on your server. You should
disable it if you are able.
--PHP server API is isapi; unknown; using pretty URLs
(index.php/Page_Title), if you have trouble change this in LocalSettings.php
--Have XML / Latin1-UTF-8 conversion support.
--PHP is configured with no memory_limit.
--Have zlib support; enabling output compression.
--Found GD graphics library built-in, image thumbnailing will be enabled if
you enable uploads.
--Installation directory: D:\\www\\carpediem\\site.com\\www\\bazaZnanja
--Notice: Undefined index: REQUEST_URI in
D:\www\carpediem\sitename.com\www\bazaZnanja\config\index.php on line 309
--Script URI path:
Notice: Undefined index: SERVER_ADMIN in
D:\www\carpediem\sitename.com\www\bazaZnanja\config\index.php on line 315
Then I enter the preferences and press the "Install!" button. After that all
I see is a blank page which has finished loading.
I've read this list and tried to enter the debug path in the
DefaultSettings.php but I made an error and forgot to add ; or something
like that.
Then I refreshed the blank page end reposted form data. The install page
threw up an php error BUT also some things, like creating the tables etc..
LocalSettings.php was created, but the site was not working ( :) ), but
instead said the default temp path is not writable, which is truly not - the
host confirmed that the PHP temp path is elswhere.
Anyway, writing the debug line didn't change things a bit - even no debug
file was created.
Anyone has any ideas on this issue please,
Jure Špik
Quite possibly I have shot myself in the foot, but maybe not...
http://cliki.site.co.il was running fine for several moons under
1.3.0beta3. I decided it was time to upgrade once 1.3.2 was out, but I
assumed wrong that a "cvs up" will give me the current release. instead
it landed a 1.4 alpha in my directory, and I got errors instead of
pages. I then tried running the install process once more (it did such a
fine job upgrading my DB from 1.2.6 to 1.3.0beta2) and no go. I assumed
the DB itself was not ruined since nothing got converted, and simply
untared a fresh 1.3.2 tarball on my site, reinstated my wiki.png and to
my surprise the site was showing mostly ok, but some of the [[links]]
are not parsed. as anyone can see on the site (even if you can't read
Hebrew).
I edit the page, the unparsed plaintext looks OK, but saving it gives
the same results, some of the [[wiki links]] work and some are printed
as is. I could not even find a common feature of the unparsed links to
explain this.
I dived into the maintenance directory and tried rebuildall.php but no
change (should it solve this anyway?)
So right now I have pages with 50% links and 50% bracketed words. I even
have a page belonging to two categories, one is correctly shown at the
bottom, the other category decleration showing as plain unparsed text.
Now I'm not the one to be displeased with disorder. As a devout Erisian
I believe the Wiki Way is a wonderful example of creative disorder. Now
I just need to squelch the distructive disorder to reach harmoney
between the Hodge and the Podge of the sacred Chao.
HELP? anyone?

Re: I really would appreciate an answer to this one!
Sorry, but I was simply nervous as the last time I tried to modify the
xhtml_slim.pt the whole wiki went down and I got a Pear error
message...(Wether otr not that was to do with the changes I made or
something else I am not sure about) - Anyway, I thought "to hell with it"
and I took the plunge and inserted the code as I thought it should go:
$nav_urls['allpages'] = array('href' => htmlspecialchars(
$this->makeSpecialUrl('Allpages'))); - into SkinPHPTal.php
and <li id="n-allpages"><a href="${nav_urls/allpages/href}"
i18n:translate="string:allpages">All Pages</a></li> - into xhtml_slim.pt
I knew "allpages" was already defined in language.php, so I left that be...
and it worked! I now have the link to all pages in the nav bar.
I would like to know what syntax needs to be used for links to pages above
the wiki directory (or for external urls) (and what other pages need
modifying beside the SkinPHPTal.php & xhtml_slim.pt) please...

I've tried to add some line inside the xhtml_slim.pt file but I get an error.
I suppose this is non possible to do. How can I add code inside this file and have no error?
Thanks.

I really would appreciate an answer to this one!
To make a link in the nav bar to Special:AllPages (ie make a link to an
index of all pages in the wiki) do I insert this (below) into SkinPHPTal.php
code?
$nav_urls['allpages'] = array('href' => htmlspecialchars(
$this->makeSpecialUrl('Allpages')));
and also in xhtml_slim.pt:
<li id="n-allpages"><a href="${nav_urls/allpages/href}"
i18n:translate="string:allpages">All Pages</a></li> ??
Also what is the difference between:
makeSpecialUrl and makeI18nUrl? - Should I have one or the other in the
SkinPHPTal.php code?
Would this work or have I got it wrong? Are there any other files I need to
modify?
This next bit is probably more complex, so I understand if there is not a
straightforward answer) -
How does one make external links using the syntax above? Or even say a link
to a php page sitting just above the wiki directory on my server?
I see that the topic of modifying links in the nav bar has come up a few
times. Is there a tutorial or a step-by-step walkthrough anywhere, say at
MetaWiki or somewhere?
