Membership of Wikimedia South Africa

Hi all, Now that we're incorporated, we need to grow our membership so as to achieve critical mass. According to the consititution, "Any person who makes a written application to become a member of the company and whose application is accepted by the directors shall be and become a member of the company." Dumisani has expressed interest and been welcomed on the email lists, but I'd like to get confirmation that he has been formally accepted as a member. I support his membership. Maarten has asked how he can become a member, which I take to be a written request, and I also support his membership. I am sure that if we ask Douglas whether he wants to be a member, he'll join, and I'd like to ask pre-emptively whether anyone has an objection to his membership. I'd also like us to agree on a membership process. One reasonable way to approach this would be to require a prospective member to contact a board member or post directly to the WMZA list. A director can then approve his or her membership tenatively with a posting to the board list - with no objections within two weeks, or with all directors' agreement, that director should then be allowed to approve the membership request formally. Please give me your feedback on this proposal. In terms of getting new members, we urgently need to get more Wikimedia project people into the organisation. We can do this by advertising on the wikis. Wikiproject South Africa: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_South_Africa The Wikiproject South Africa is quite active, and I think we should all join it, and announce any meetups on the project page. We should try to get banners on South African language Wikis ASAP: The only really active one is Afrikaans: http://af.wikipedia.org . We have none of the more active af-wiki editors in our membership, which is a shame. I'm sure we can fix this soon by simply approaching them and letting them know who we are and what we're doing. Registered but less active: http://nso.wikipedia.org - Sepedi Wikipedia has 568 pages, but not very many active editors. I see Mohau has been editing a bit there. http://zu.wikipedia.org - isiZulu Wikipedia has 543 pages, and a relatively similar state to Sepedi. http://tn.wikipedia.org - Setswana Wikipedia has 491 pages, but not very much seems to be going on there since the Google challenge finished. http://ss.wikipedia.org - siSwati Wikipedia has 361 pages, slightly less active than Sepedi and isiZulu http://ts.wikipedia.org - Xitsonga Wikipedia only has 193 pages, but seems to have more activity recently, and has a nicer-looking front page than many similar-sized minor language Wikipedias. I see Dumisani (Thuvack) has been active there, maybe he can help connect with the community. http://ve.wikipedia.org - tshiVenda Wikipedia has 190 pages, but doesn't seem active at all at the moment. http://st.wikipedia.org - Sesotho Wikipedia has 145 pages, but doesn't seem very active. http://xh.wikipedia.org - isiXhosa Wikipedia has 136 pages, but is not active lately. If we can manage to connect to active users in these Wikipedias, we might be able to get them to write a note on the front page asking users to connect with us, to build community connections. http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/nr/Main_Page - Southern Ndebele has one article, about the National Language Service, so I doubt there's a community to work with. I think we should also ask for a geolocated banner ad: this way anyone who uses Wikipedia in South Africa can be alerted to our existence, and hopefully we'll get some traction. WMZA baking situation

Hello Nola Any news on the progress of Wikimedia ZA's bank account? Some time has passed now, and I haven't hear a thing. The last time I heard from FNB was on 21 May when the Stellenbosch (Neelsie) branch asked me to whom they should mail the documents, to which I replied that they must contact you for the details. WLM Budget

Hello everyone I have made a few changes to the WLM budget proposed by Dumisani. Most of them is minor. Take a look at the document on Google Drive and please comment. Many (if not most) of the expenses currently in the budget will get covered by government support, if they still want to support us up to such an extend. The balance of the budget we should then apply a grant for. Currently there are many expenses which could probably be left out, be for now we want it as thorough as possible. Also, it would be excellent if we could get the responses as soon as possible, because we would like to present this next week to our Western Cape Heritage contacts. And, as we all know, the WMF grants process can be slow, so we would like to submit the grant as quickly as possible. Thanks. Kind regards Lourie

Struggling with the monuments database

Hey all, we got a sample file of the monuments database. I asked this to allow us to see what kind of information we can use, and what type of processing we have to do. WLM magazine feature and judges

Hello everyone See below my discussion with Johann regarding media coverage and potential judges. One of the topics discussed is whether we want a formal agreement with a media house such as Media24. Johann explained the pros and cons of such an agreement below. Hi guys Here are some updates on Wiki Loves Monuments: 1) WLM-ZA Social network pages are up and running. Please like/follow these pages and start enviting others too. Please assist with proof reading and content addition as we still have some "red links". http://wikilovesmonuments.co.za/wiki/Main_Page You can also check the time line of activities we still need to complete. 3) WLM-ZA Budget document is almost matured now. We have managed to bring down the total budget cost for this national competition down to R490K. This is modest compared to national projects of similar dimensions. I have added my suggestions on who we should be targeting for funding of specific parts of this budget. Please post your comments online. This document was shared before. If you still dont have the link to the google document please e-mail me. We need final comments by next Wednesday 27th June in order to send funding request within the 60 day limit before the start of the competition. Its been a good 3 weeks, lets not tire out now. Hello Andrew Thank you for the contact details, we are looking forward to collaborating with the other provinces. Regarding the endorsement letter; I see that it is addressed to Africa Centre for the WikiAfrica project. I think that there must have been a misunderstanding along the way, because this is actually a project of Wikimedia ZA in which Africa Centre is assisting us. Will it be possible to change it to read "Partnership with Wikimedia ZA: Wiki Loves Monuments" instead of what it currently reads? The Wiki Loves Monuments project was created and is run by the Wikimedia chapters which requires this endorsement to be addressed to the South African chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation.
