Hi
Here's another update on the state of the African language Wikipedias,
with a particular shoutout to Dumisani, who's been active in Xitsonga
and has helped Ndebele, the last official South African language without
a Wikipedia, onto the incubator, as well as User:Aliwal2012, who's been
editing up a storm in Northern Sotho, Afrikaans and English.

Hello everyone,
This is just to let you all know that two additional Art+Feminism
<http://art.plusfeminism.org/>edit-a-thons have been organised at
the Michaelis School of Fine Art. Due to the great success of the previous
event
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/South_Africa/ArtAndFeminism_…>
we have decided to do two more over the coming weeks.
We are looking for volunteers to help out with teaching people to edit
Wikipedia.
If you are interested in helping out or just want to do some productive
editing in a supportive environment then please let me know or just pitch
up on the day.
When: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm on Saturday the 2nd and 9 April 2016
Where: University of Cape Town, Michaelis School of Fine Art, 31 - 37
Orange Street, Cape Town City Centre
This is open to all experienced Wikipedia editors.
Cheers,
Douglas.

Hello everyone,
In roughly three weeks time (22-24 April) the Wikimedia Chapter's
Conference will kick off in Berlin. Wikimedia chapters from all over the
world will be meeting to discuss important issues related to the status of
the Wikimedia Movement.
This year will be a particularly important meeting due to political changes
within the management structures of the Wikimedia Foundation which will
lead to conversations about the future direction of the Movement.
I am not going to go into any details but should you wish to know more
Molly White (User:GorillaWarfare) has written a through account and time
line of events that you can read here:
http://mollywhite.net/wikimedia-timeline/
One of the concerns has been a feeling that the Foundation has been
spending too much money on large technology projects (such as the Knowledge
Engine) at the expense of other more needed projects such as upgrading the
Wikipedia User Experience, the Visual Editor, or the media player. Another
often voiced concern has been a feeling that the Foundation leadership has
not been as transparent as it could or should be. Again I am not going to
go into much more detail here but you can read William Beutler's summary
and proposals for change here:
http://thewikipedian.net/2016/03/11/modest-proposal-wikimedia-future/
If you find any other accounts or articles about the proposed direction of
the movement then please let me know.
I have been selected to attend the chapters conference on Wikimedia ZA's
behalf and I would like to get your feedback on how you feel we should
approach discussions regarding the future direction of the Wikimedia
Movement.
We had a board meeting a few days ago where I got feedback about the
board's position (you can see the minutes of that meeting here
<http://wikimedia.org.za/wiki/Board_Meeting_27_March_2016>) but I want to
get feedback from other non-board members as well.
Best regards,
Douglas.

Hello everyone,
This is a quick reminder about the 12th Cape Town meetup
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Cape_Town/Cape_Town_12> that
will be happening on Sunday the 6 March 2016.
Details:
- Location: Truth Coffee, 36 Buitenkant St, Cape Town from
- Time: 11:00-14:00
- Date: Sunday, 6 March 2016
As usual coffee will be free. Keep a look out for the sign with the
Wikipedia logo on it. I am going to try and grab one of the bigger chairs
at the back of the coffee shop so don't worry if you don't find us at our
usual large table in the front. Keep looking, I will be there.
If you are coming from the Southern Suburbs by car I would advise that you
avoid any rout that takes the M5 highway since the Argus Cycle Tour will be
taking place on the same day.
Cheers,
Douglas.
