Hello everyone,
This is just to let you know that this year Wikimedia South Africa is *10
years old!*... oh and we have our next chapter meetup set for Saturday 26
November 2022 (from 10:00 onwards). Since this is our chapter's
tenth anniversary, and the November meetup will likely be the last one for
2022, and we want to restart face-to-face meetups (whilst still doing
digital ones); we thought that this would be a great opportunity to do it
all at once.
Therefore we will have a face-to-face and online (hybrid) meetup in both
Cape Town and Johannesburg to celebrate the chapter's tenth birthday.
Date: *Saturday, 26 November 2022*
Time:
*10:00 onwards (likely ending around 13:00)*
*Locations: *
*Cape Town* - The Code Bridge <https://codebridge.org.za/> at 1 Thicket St,
Newlands
<https://www.google.com/maps/place/Codebridge/@-33.9765347,18.4663128,15z/da…>,
Cape Town, 7700 (lots of parking in the dusty parking lot across the road
from the newly constructed apartment building). Light refreshments and
snacks will be provided.
The location in *Johannesburg* has yet to be confirmed. It will be
announced closer to the date.
*Online*: If you can't or don't wish to attend in person but also don't
want to miss out then dont worry, the digital event will still happen on
Discord <https://discord.gg/HwBwHWWurr> as usual but we will set up a
connection with the Cape Town and Johannesburg locations.
As always you can find out more details at the *event page on Wikipedia
here

Hello everyone,
Wikimedia South Africa is helping out with the hosting of the Right to
Research in Africa mini-conference that will be held from 23 to 27 January
2023 in Cape Town and Pretoria. Wikimedians, such as yourself, can join us
by RSVPing before 10 December 2022. See the even poster below for more
information.
The event will focus on how copyright impacts our rights to research and
create content for the public good. This includes how copyright impacts our
ability to edit Wikipedia or contribute to Wikimedia Commons in South
Africa.
We are also looking for Wikipedia editors who can volunteer to help out
with the editathon we will host in Pretoria and Cape Town. As part of the
event we will be hosting an editathon for area experts (mostly copyright
lawyers) to improve Wikipedia articles relative to their area of expertise.
This event is modeled on the Water Sustainability editathon
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_edit-a-thon> we hosted
during Wikimania 2018 wherein a Wikipedia editor was available to coach one
or two area experts to improve content on Wikipedia. Please let me know if
you are able to help out or interested in volunteering.
