Hi everyone
Tobias Schonwetter, as mentioned in an email last week, has put together a
really helpful document about what type of legal vehicle should be used for
the proposed SA Chapter. This document, which I've attached here, outlines
the considerations taken in drafting this opinion. Tobias (with the support
of Chetty Law) suggest that we go with a Section 21 company.
Thank you so much to Tobias for this document; it is really helpful and
outlines very clearly the issues for everyone. Please note that Tobias
alludes to the 'financial services sector' in the document, as within the
discussion during the kickoff workshop, it was mentioned by myself and
Achal that we had had an indication of initial interest from this sector
about the Chapter.
Please can we all consider the attached document. I would like to suggest
that its open for discussion and debate until *Thursday, 2nd September*,
following which a final decision will be taken about the legal vehicle.
So if you have concerns or opinions, please voice them between now and
Thurs.
Regards
Kerryn

Hi everyone
Just a quick update on the Chapter process.
Tobias Schonwetter who you met if you attending the kickoff Chapter
workshop, has been looking over the issues of what legal vehicle to adopt
for the Chapter. He has now sent this to Pria Chetty from Chetty Law who
will discuss this with him and revert to the list in a few days' time. As
soon as this has been put forward the list can discuss / agree/ debate for a
couple of days following which a final decision should be taken.
Depending on the final outcome, The African Commons Project will start a
draft Articles of Association/ By Laws/ Constitution and put this out within
a few days of the final decision.
Have a good weekend all ... and watch this space!
Regards
Kerryn

Northern Sotho is the only official South African language without an
active Wikipedia. The project sits in the incubator, where it
interestingly has far more articles than all other SA languages bar
English and Afrikaans (540 vs Swati on 187).
Mohau Monaledi has been driving the project, and has contributed 1310
edits, more than everyone else put together, and was one of the original
proposers in 2007. It's unfortunately quite difficult to get a project
out of incubator these days, and the project needs some help to become
an official Wikipedia.
The proposal is struggling to meet the following criterion: "develop an
active test project; it must *remain active* until approval. It is
generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active,
not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months."
Mohau needs more support!
This would be a great project for our fledgling Wikimedia South Africa
chapter to drive, and it would be a significant milestone to have all
official South African languages represented by their own language
Wikipedia. Northern Sotho has over 4 million speakers, and is the 4th
most spoken language in South Africa. If you speak Northern Sotho,
please help out! And if not, try recruit some Northern Sotho speakers. I
will try to focus some work with my template translation tool on
Northern Sotho as well.
To help:
- go to the Northern Sotho site on the incubator -
http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/nso/Letlakala_la_Pele - and
create an account.
- start editing some articles!
- add your name to the list of people interested in forming an editing
community at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Sepedi
A key tracker is at:
http://toolserver.org/~pathoschild/catanalysis/?cat=0&title=wp/nso&wiki=inc…
There needs to be at least 3 active (not grayed out) editors
contributing for 3 consecutive months (there was in late 2009, but not
recently).
Once this has been done, and it's probably the most significant
remaining hurdle, we can start on the next stage of the approval process
- see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language_committee/Status/wp/nso
for the details.
I've also posted this on my blog - http://www.greenman.co.za/blog/?p=741
- to spread the appeal a little wider.

Hi all,
Bence proposed a logo according to the Wikimedia official marks
guidelines: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks
I've uploaded it to the wikimedia za page, but I really just dumped it
there. Feel free to reformat...

Some great ideas here! I'm not sure who would be able to line up
sponsors for this kind of thing. Any ideas from the list?

Last year it was just undivided floor space and Karl Fischer from DST
supplied chairs and small tables. I live close to the CSIR, so I'll have a
look on the Friday and then add furniture and duck tape as needed.
So the banner can be between 1 and 2 meter. Something simple like "Wikipedia
South Africa" with the logo will be good enough. I can print it with my ink
jet on a number of A4s and just glue it together.

Hello,
Last year OpenStreetMap had a stand at Software Freedom Day Pretoria.
We didn't make a big effort, but it must have been successful, because
we've been invited back.
So I'd like to hear if someone would like to run a Wikipedia stand.
All that is required is a banner and a person with a laptop that can
answer the basic questions. When he / she wants to present a talk or
visit the other stands, I'll run both stands.
It will be held at the Department of Science & Technology on the CSIR
Campus in Pretoria (near Menlyn) on the 18th of September.
