Dear All
Thanks for the continued interest.
After Friday's meeting, and enthusiasm from all the attendees at it, it
looks like we have the complete support of the Western Cape Government
heritage department for the Wiki Loves Monuments. The next step is to secure
national support via SAHRA (South African Heritage Resources Agency) and
other provincial heritage departments. We have a meeting with SAHRA on
Monday to discuss the implications of the competition for them.
Maarten, Lourie and I are going to now construct the concept, mechanics and
rollout document. When it is ready we will put it out to all for feedback.
Please let me know if anyone else wants to be involved from a planning and
meeting point of view.
Thanks!

Hey all,
we had a very interesting chat this morning with the Director Western Cape,
Andrew Hall. He was extremely interested in the WLM competition, and
actually wanted to start right away.
Next Friday we have a follow meeting with other people from the Heritage
organisation (other provinces, national level, ...). Things should really
be moving then. Btw, you're invited to join this meeting in Cape Town.
Things discussed:
- 24 September is Heritage day. We should do something special on this
day (uploadmarathon, ...)
- Three levels of Heritage Sites: National (about 15), Provincial (5000
in SA, of which 2500 in WC), and Municipal Heritage (15000, only in WC)
- The government is working on a database with all the heritage, should
be ready in July
Next meetings:
- 23 March: follow up, meeting with other people
- 12 April: meeting with the Counsil Executive Meeting (unsure if this
is of the municipality, on national level, of Heritage WC, ..)
Conclusion: I think we're launched in SA :-)
Grtz,
Maarten

Hello Asaf
I hope that it is going well on your side. Can we (me and the other WMZA representative) have a meeting with you sometime when we are in Berlin? I see that there is arranged for meetings to take place on the Thursday, so maybe we should use this opportunity? We would like to discuss our action plan and budget for the coming year, and also the actual launch and so forth of our chapter. Looking forward to seeing you again in Berlin!
Kind regards
Lourie

Hey All,
our first meeting never went on. I propose to meet on a short notice: this
weekend, or at the beginning of next week.
See
http://www.doodle.com/2fixt4dnd6an537p
I will ask if we can do the meeting in the offices of the Heritage Agency
of the Western Cape.
Grtz,
Maarten
Can you guys maybe decide on a date and then I will see if it fits my calendar? I was in hospital all of last week and has a lot of course work to catch up with.
Kind regards
Lourie

Hello everyone (sorry for cross-spamming)
I am very proud and privileged to announce that Wikimedia ZA is finally registered locally! The process was delayed due to a change in our local companies act during 2011. We as the chapter is very excited about the future of Wikimedia ZA. Many thanks to those who helped us bring the required people together and establish the chapter. Also many thanks to the African Commons Project for taking care of many of the administrative aspects during the chapter formation phase. Special thanks to Kerryn McKay for taking great interest in this process and also all of the other members of the administrative team.
Kind regards
Lourie
Hi Cora-Lee,
Glad to meet you! I'm an engineer and biochemist working for Kraft
foods, but in my spare time, I work on the Wikipedia project. I've
been an editor since 2006, and a few of us are currently involved in
setting up a local chapter of the Wikimedia organisation. I've copied
our mailing list as well so that our other members can join the
discussion if they want.
It would be great if you could give me a fuller introduction to
yourself and your work with Gift of the Givers.
In this email I'll give you a brief introduction to Wikipedia's aims
and philosophy, explain how to examine the history of a page, and give
some information on how to handle editing a page where you have a
conflict of interest. Along the way, I'll also point out some ways to
get help with the editing and review process of Wikipedia.
Wikipedia, as you probably know, is a free online encyclopedia,
written entirely by volunteers. The fundamental principles of
Wikipedia are summarized at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:PILLARS - an excellent page to
start learning about the project. Please read this; it will take you
5 minutes, and it has links to pages with more details. Pay specific
attention to the first one: this will guide you in terms of what kind
of content is appropriate.
A wikipedia page is a living document, as you already know: anyone can
edit it. The interesting thing is, every edit that has ever been made
to a page remains available in the page history. When you click on
the "View history" tab at the top of a page, you can see exactly who
did what, and when. Take a look at the Gift of the Givers page
history at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gift_of_the_Givers&action=history
- you'll see it's quite a brief history, but it tells a story. See if
you can follow it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Page_history
should help you with this! One bit of information that you won't see
there is the deletion and undeletion of the page. That's available at
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=delete&page=Gi…
.
Now the thorny issue of conflict of interest. While it is not against
Wikipedia's rules for someone who is close to a topic to edit the
page, it is full of pitfalls, one of which is clear from this case: if
you don't write from a neutral point of view, your edits might vanish,
or even the whole article might be deleted! Also, if you don't
declare your interest, even valuable edits that you make stand to be
deleted because the other editors lose all trust in your good faith.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:COI for more information on
this.
Now the good news: As a member of the organisation, you're uniquely
placed to help. If you can release pictures of Gift in action under a
free license (I can help you with this - contact me for assistance),
this would be great for the article and the project. Also, if you
have someone in your organisation who has a list of articles and
documentaries featuring Gift, this would be a great place to find
reliable sources. Because you'd be editing under a conflict of
interest, you have to make sure that each fact that you give is firmly
supported in a reliable, neutral source. I can help you format these
citations.
Some last suggestions: I would very strongly recommend that you create
a username for yourself, and put a brief description on your user
page. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Register for more
information. After editing, please fill in the "edit summary" box so
that it's clear in the page history what was edited. Please also read
your text and ask yourself: does this look like something you'd read
in a mainstream encyclopedia? I would also VERY STRONGLY recommend
that you send out a request for comment after editing. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:RFC for more details, or ask me for
help.
I hope this wasn't too confusing! Let me know if you hit any snags.
Kind regards,
David

Hey all,
After my chat with Lourie two weeks ago, I discussed a possible
WikiLovesMonuments with Lodewijk. He was one of the guys that organised the
first edition in the Netherlands, and he really helped me organising the
edition last year in Belgium. The competition will go global this year:
Europe, India, Chile, Canada, USA, Russia, Israel, Philippines, are sure

And he was looking forward to see South Africa join the competition!
More information on the competition is on Commons:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012 You can
find a proposed organisational
timeline<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Timeline>that
will help us with organising the event.
Maybe we could meet to chat about the possibilities, and see if we can find
enough persons that are interested? I had already a first chat with Lourie
two weeks ago. I propose a meeting, again in Cape Town: see the DOODLE

Hello everyone,
This is just a quick notification that the follow up
Xhosa language workshop will be held this weekend on Saturday, 25th
February at the same place and time as the last workshop. The Bessie Head
Computer Lab in the basement of the Beattie Building, University of Cape
Town from 09h00 to 11h00.
I have also attached some pictures from the last Xhosa wiki awareness
workshop we had at the the Western Cape Provincial government last week
Friday. Many thanks to Francis at Wikiproject Africa for taking these
pictures.
Cheers,
Douglas.
