Good evening, Wikimedia ZA!
Hope you had a wonderful weekend and that you are ready for the week ahead.
On Friday, 15 January 2016, Wikipedia celebrated its 15th anniversary. A
writing contest has been organised as part of a content liberation project.
The aim is to create at least 15 biographies on notable African women
within 15 days. Follow the link below for further information:
Wiki Loves Women - Writing Contest
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Loves_Women/Writing_Contest>
Enjoy the contest! It ends on the 31st of January 2016.
Hello everyone,
This is a last moment reminder that we will be having a small picnic today
at De Waal Park in Oranjezicht today from 4pm onwards. Below are the
details.
Place: De Waal Park, Oranjezicht, City Bowl, Cape Town
Time: 4pm to 7pm
Date: today
So if you are free, join us for this small informal event to celebrate
Wikipedia's 15th birthday. I will setup a local wifi zone so we can get
some editing done as well.
Cheers,
Douglas.

Hello everyone,
This is a last moment reminder that tomorrow, 9 January, is the deadline to
apply for a scholorship to attend this year's Wikimania
<https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page> in Italy. The event
will run from June 21–28 this year in the Italian town of Esino Lario
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esino_Lario>.
It would be really nice to have a greater South African/African presence at
Wikimania this year so I would like to encourage Wikipedia editors (or
other Wikimedia project contributors) to apply for a scholarship to attend
the event.
You can apply at the link here: https://scholarships.wikimedia.org/apply
Please remember to include all relevant information to help support it,
your involvement both on-wiki and off-wiki (such as volunteering for
Wikipedia events/outreach or participation in the chapter) is important so
please include it.
Cheers and good luck,
Douglas.

Hi all,
I'm not sure whether all of you know Sumana, but she did a lot for
MediaWiki while she was at the Wikimedia Foundation, and she forwarded
this to me.
Feel free to pester her with questions ;-]

Subject: AlterConf in Cape Town seeking speakers
Date: Tue, 5 Jan 2016 11:51:46 -0800
From: Sumana Harihareswara <sumanah(a)panix.com>
To: info(a)wikimedia.org.za
Hi, Wikimedia South Africa! I am a Wikimedian who has spoken at an
AlterConf in the United States and found it a rich, energizing,
effective experience. AlterConf is a conference promoting diverse
perspectives on technology and gaming, and on 27 August it aims to come
to Cape Town:
http://www.alterconf.com/sessions/cape-town-south-africa
AlterConf is seeking speakers, freelancers, volunteers, and sponsors --
please contact the conference by June 16 at midnight PST. They are
interested in finding and paying speakers to discuss any and all aspects
of diversity in tech and/or gaming. "No experience required, we're happy
to help you formulate ideas or to help put your talk together, and we
pay all of our speakers!" There are also other paid freelancing
opportunities available, as well as volunteer slots.
"AlterConf doesn't financially profit from our events. All money we
bring in through sponsorships, donations, and ticket sales go to paying
our speakers and covering costs with our vendors who are majority owned
by marginalized people."
I bet AlterConf would benefit from a local Wikimedian perspective, so I
wanted to share this opportunity with you. Please forward, and best
wishes.
