Hello, For a year or more I have been looking for an individual grant to buy a simple image scanner. My most recent application was at Ta Wikipedia https://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%B5%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%95%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%95%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%80%E0%AE%9F%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%AF%E0%AE%BE:%E0%AE%89%E0%AE%A4%E0%AE%B5%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%A4%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%A4%E0%AF%8A%E0%AE%95%E0%AF%88#User:Titodutta
From that application:, I need a scanner regularly, so I would not be able
to do all works in a particular period (for example, someone says, "take a scanner for two weeks and return after that)
Can anyone give me oive me one?
Tito, Just some comments from experience but not directly related to your request. I have scanned a fairly large number of documents (mostly thin brochures in which the staples could be removed) using a low-cost flatbed scanner. The one I use is in the Canon LIDE series - these use LEDs and work off USB power (no additional powercord). They are quite inexpensive (around Rs 3000) but slow (like all flatbed scanners). It is useful if you are doing high resolution scans of images. If your focus is more on text - and it readability or OCR-ability - then a digital camera based rig works much more efficiently. Lots of sites on DIY book-scanners (and you can probably get Viswaprabha to demo you Scantailor). For library research purpose copying I routinely use a small pocket digital camera and it does a perfectly good job. Most librarians I have met have been ok with their use.
best wishes Shyamal

Dear Tito,
I would have given the same advice as Shyamal did.
One could also look at using a ssecond-hand Smartphone with 6MP and above camera to do a decent image capture and then use scantailor for bulk processing.
Viswa trained many Wikipedians including Jayanta on the use of scantailor during the TTT . Please consider reaching out to Jayanta for help.
Best, Vishnu

Hi Vishnu, Shyamal
Thanks for sharing suggestions.
Hi Tito,
Please place your request as explained at
http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Infrastructure_Scholarship
We will take it forward from there ASAP.
Ravi
Hi Tito,
After reading what you intend to do with the scanner, I think you can do a pretty job scanning documents using a phone camera with good quality instead. Besides, it won't be difficult to carry around - it'll just be in your pocket
I, for instance, scan documents using my phone, which fortunately, has 20 megapixel. I use the software called Camscanner[1] which works well on Android. It allows converting your scanning into PDF and other formats for safe keeping.
Of course you don't need a 20 megapixel camera to scan documents. Somewhere 8 to 12 megapixel is enough to get HD quality of documents, if that's what you're aiming for.
Though not scanning,[2] I could get some nice pictures with just with my phone, just to show that, with careful orientation, you can scan, even better documents with your phone

Just my suggestion.

Dear all, I have had a great breakthrough in large scale book scanning with a good camera-phone just a few days back. Will elaborate on this within a few days as soon as settle down back home.
Thanks. :)

Okay, Following Ravi-ji's suggestions, I have posted here: http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Infrastructure_Scholarship#User:Titodutta_Scanner
I think that hi res camera smartphones are costlier than a scanner, A scanner can be justified & remain community property. Are we implying that he change his grant request to a smartphone?

Hi,
Will piQx Xcanex Portable Book and Document Scanner http://www.amazon.in/piQx-Xcanex-Portable-Document-Scanner/dp/B00DFWCCXS be a good machine for scanning old and brittle books?
Retaining as much color and quality for OCR needs is also essential. http://www.amazon.in/piQx-Xcanex-Portable-Document-Scanner/dp/B00DFWCCXS
I am aware of the suggestions in this mail thread about using a smart phone or regular pocket camera for scanning documents.
But, I am looking at large scale GLAM projects where a community owned scanning machine would be appropriate.
Ravi
Ravishankar, there is a review at https://www.techinasia.com/piqxs-portable-scanner-change-books-digitized/ Among the cons it says "The inability to digitize books larger than your typical paperback novel is a crippling factor."
best wishes Shyamal

Did any one check this scanner? http://www.pcworld.com/article/2070824/fujitsu-scansnap-sv600-review-touch-f...
I'm finding it interesting, yet to see it in action. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Hi Ravi,
Any portable scanner should be avoided as it will not produce good quality high res images that are required for OCR.
I work in an environment where scanners are greatly used and we use them for corporate clients docs and signatures, etc. Based on my experience I'd suggest Canon or Fujitsu scanners as they do the great job. I agree with you that smartphones or pocket cameras are neither an option if you're looking for large scale and good quality work.

Shyamal, Omshivaprakash, Dhaval
Thanks for the feedback.
We are also seeking feedback from the global GLAM community.
Will appreciate if anyone can connect us to vendors who can provide demos for various scanners in Bengaluru or Kolkata.
Ravi
Hi,
Based on Omshivaprakash's recommendation, Wikimedians in Kolkata were convinced about using Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600 after trying a demo.
This has been now bought as part of the GLAM for Kolikata Little Magazine Library O Gabeshana Kendra grant
http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Grants/GLAM_for_Kolikata_Little_Magazine_Library_O_...
Thanks Omshivaprakash and everyone who gave their valuable inputs.
