Dear Indian Wikimedians,
As many of you may have known, one of our fellow Wikimedian was arrested by
Uttar Pradesh Police in October 2020. His name is Siddique Kappan (His
wikimedia username is User:Sidheeq). He is from Kerala, and he was active
in Wikimedia projects (mainly in Malayalam Wikipedia) until his arrest.
Incidently he is a journalist and he was arrested from the home of Hathras
rape and murder victim while reporting the victim Dalit girl's family
members. UP Police has slapped Sedition, Terrorism as well as UAPA charges
against him.
Kappen is diabetic and now COVID positive. He was admitted to hospital only
after he collapsed in the jail cell. With his deteriorating health, it was
accused that Kappan was chained to hospital bed like an animal. Today's
news reports say that he is in critical condition. (You could always google
"Siddique Kappan")
As a tone deaf people I don't expect anything from this mail, I just wish
to share the information.
Stay Inside, Stay Complementary (non-critical), Stay safe, Stay healthy.

Namaskara,
This might be some food for thought, and inputs are welcome. India mailing
list is the largest and most widely used Wikimedia mailing list for the
Indian community. Could we have a practice that all grant requests from the
country (or related to) are informed on the Wikimediaindia-l mailing list?
Whether it is a state-level, project-level, language-level etc, or whether
it is a rapid grant, project grant etc it would be good to see the plan
details on this mailing list in advance. It will ensure greater visibility,
and it will also ensure the community's understanding/knowing of each
other's projects.
If we can have a practice like this, we can inform Wikimedia, or CR team or
relevant support structure(s) as an India community practice.
This post is in my personal capacity. Please assume good faith

Hello all,
We are excited to announce a 3-months long proofread competition which will
run on Bangla Wikisource from September 1 to November 30, 2021 as a result
of an ongoing GLAM collaboration between the Two Centuries of Indian Print
(2CIP) project of the British Library (BL) and the West Bengal Wikimedians
User Group (WBG). This is the second proofread competition under the GLAM
project, the first one happened in March-April.
The event page of the competition is here - https://bn.wikisource.org/s/gwen
(in Bangla)
The GLAM event page is here - https://bn.wikisource.org/s/gt5i (also in
Bangla)
Under the project, 2CIP officials will be uploading public domain Bangla
books from their collection on Wikimedia Commons and our volunteers will
take care of the rest of the work from indexing, proofreading, transcluding
etc. on Wikisource along with building their data on Wikidata. The prizes
to the top 5 winners for this competition will be sent by WBG and BL will
send digital certificates to each one of them.
For those who are interested to learn more about the project, there is a
video recording of the Wikimania session on this -

+A Question
During a general conversation with a Wikifriend, someone asked me a
question. I'll treat that question as "anonymous". The question is:
* Why should someone vote in the board election process? How is it going to
affect my project such a a regional-language Wikisource, or Wikivoyage, or
a project without much support?
I have my own view on why I should vote (or voted), very briefly— this is
an important process, and a trustee is a powerful and decision-making
position. Hence it is important to ensure the best candidates are elected.
Every well-thought vote helps in this process.
That's my answer very briefly. I have rechecked the board election project
page, and the FAQ page, and I don't see this question is answered directly
(unless I missed something)
If anyone from the board election organising team, the board/Community
Affairs Committee(CAC), or community wants to help, by answering this
question, kindly feel free to do so. I think it is OK, if someone does not
want to vote, or have their own reasons of not voting (feel free to share
your thoughts). The discussion possibly will help one (I believe "many")
Wikimedian(s) who are wondering "why should I vote?"
Footnotes
[1] The voting ends on 31 August 2021, 23:59 UTC. In the India mailing
list, I have used Indian Standard Time, that's why it is 1 September 2021,
5:29 am IST.
Kind regards,
