Dear all,
On a casual request, I was prompted to support some of the tasks the
India Chapter and the India community would benefit together, and I decided
to take up the responsibility of creating profiles for the 'Featured
Wikimedian' section in the Wikimedia India Chapter
wiki<http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Main_Page>.
This section aims to showcase the achievements of active Wikimedians who
have contributed significantly to the Wikimedia projects in English and/or
Indian languages. The featured profile for January is that of Mr. Balachandran
G <http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Featured_Wikimedian/Archive/2013//January> from
Malayalam Wikipedia.
If you know an inspiring Wikimedian whose profile hasn't been featured
yet, do let me know! Please also go through the profile of the featured
Wikimedian of this month and send your suggestions and comments for
improving this section.
Happy new year!
Regards

Hi all,
Needless to repeat the <India-Indic-Mobile-Growth> story. But I was
surprised even with that, many Indic wikipedias do not have a mobile
site(or some have gone dead since they failed to update for
MobileFrontend[1] changes), even the ones that had weren't very much
usable. Lets not cite, mobile phones do not have fonts, no one uses Indic
on mobile, we all know lot of people do use Opera-mini with complex script
rendering support.
* Please visit <yourlanguage>.m.wikpedia.org and see if there is a page. If
it has nothing but 'search, license, and action control' links, here[2] are
the steps that an admin need to do to get a mobile site running with
content. If you have problem in doing those, come and ask at
#wikimedia-tech (or #mediawiki {?}).
* When I visited Tamil wikipedia mobile site, I was restricted to content
that was put on mainpage, the links in it. Since my Symbian phone doesnt
have Indic input system, I cant search anything. The solution to this is to
have a list of articles in alphabetical order *and* display it in mobile
front page, like Assamese wikipedians have done[3]. Many Indic wikis have
this template, but few show it on main page. This might be incredibly
useful on mobile versions.
More thoughts on improving Mobile sites welcome :)
Mobile sites are important since,
1. Lot of people will be using this.
2. The Wikipedia app uses this(?) [Correct me if am wrong]

We are happy to share with you the good news that the Creative Commons
event held at Bangalore on 25th Feb 2013, was concluded successfully.
We had the Creative Commons presentation focused on Open GLAM along with a
wikimedia presentation focused on GLAM WIKI.
Arun Ram, founder member of the chapter spoke about Wikimedia, and
Wikimedia India.
This was followed by a presentation on Creative commons licenses and how
they work by Jessica Coates.
Arun continued with a description GLAM and the intersection of GLAM with
wikipedia.
Omshivaprakash brought out many examples of Creative Commons used in
Kannada web.
Jane Hornibrook gave many examples of CC licenses being used worldwide.
The event was attended by 88 people at the beginning. Ladies outnumbered
gents 50 : 38. Apart from the students of College of Fine Arts, there were
nearly 40 students from the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media.
There were a few members from Azim Premji Foundation. There was a member
who had come all the way from Pondicherry. The way some 15 to 20 odd guests
hung around till the very last, nearly 10 to 15 minutes after the end of
the event, showed the camaraderie built over the event.
The major disappointment was that the target audience of Galleries, Museums
etc were low in attendance.
Overall it was a good event.
Hi
Yesterday one of my journalist friend Arvind Shesh posted on Facebook about the content of the article ^^ on Aruna Roy [1] and then it came into my notice.
First of all I want to clear here that the mail is not to blame anybody...in fact we all who are associated with Wikipedia are somehow responsible for the content present on wikipedia. In fact we can justify even the factual blunder but we can not justify such an obscene and vulgar language what was used for Aruna Roy; not only for Aruna Roy, we cannot justify these type of sentences for anybody. Thanks to the Hindi wiki editor, now it is removed after I approached probably [2].
But by going through the content, keeping continuous watch is necessary. I can understand that its purely a volunteer work and there is great need of many volunteers for our Indian languages. So we need to attract more volunteers for editing and content generation. So would be great to here from the seasoned wikipedians about how this can be done.
I am new to Hindi wikipedia community and I am trying to understand the community perspective and approach.

Hi All,
As some of you might be aware that around this time last year, we had seen
our gu.wikisource.org coming in existence. To Celebrate its first
anniversary, we have planned an event[1] on 31st March. The event will be
held at Rupayatan[2], which is a host institution for the reputed Narasinh
Mehta Award (the largest) in the field of Gujarati Literature, and situated
near Historic town of Junagadh and at the foothills of Girnar. Gujarati
wiki community cordially invites you all to the event.
In addition to this, I am conducting 2 more events, one at Gujarat
Vidyapith[3], where more than 1500 students and teachers will be viewing
the event through video link. That is planned for 29th March. There will be
a workshop/wiki Academy conducted as well for the interested students.
Third event is planned in Mumbai, where a substantial number of Gujarati
speaking population resides. on 6th April, I and another Gujarati
Wikimedian (who is my fellow admin on gu:ws) will be presenting at Zarukho,
a group of Gujarati Authors, Poets, and people of Gujarati Stage and like
minded people. A typical gathering to the group's monthly event range from
80 to 250 attendees.
All who can attend any of these events are welcome.
Regards,
Dhaval
