Dear Indian Wikimedians,
As many of you may have known, one of our fellow Wikimedian was arrested by
Uttar Pradesh Police in October 2020. His name is Siddique Kappan (His
wikimedia username is User:Sidheeq). He is from Kerala, and he was active
in Wikimedia projects (mainly in Malayalam Wikipedia) until his arrest.
Incidently he is a journalist and he was arrested from the home of Hathras
rape and murder victim while reporting the victim Dalit girl's family
members. UP Police has slapped Sedition, Terrorism as well as UAPA charges
against him.
Kappen is diabetic and now COVID positive. He was admitted to hospital only
after he collapsed in the jail cell. With his deteriorating health, it was
accused that Kappan was chained to hospital bed like an animal. Today's
news reports say that he is in critical condition. (You could always google
"Siddique Kappan")
As a tone deaf people I don't expect anything from this mail, I just wish
to share the information.
Stay Inside, Stay Complementary (non-critical), Stay safe, Stay healthy.

Namaskara,
This might be some food for thought, and inputs are welcome. India mailing
list is the largest and most widely used Wikimedia mailing list for the
Indian community. Could we have a practice that all grant requests from the
country (or related to) are informed on the Wikimediaindia-l mailing list?
Whether it is a state-level, project-level, language-level etc, or whether
it is a rapid grant, project grant etc it would be good to see the plan
details on this mailing list in advance. It will ensure greater visibility,
and it will also ensure the community's understanding/knowing of each
other's projects.
If we can have a practice like this, we can inform Wikimedia, or CR team or
relevant support structure(s) as an India community practice.
This post is in my personal capacity. Please assume good faith

Hello everyone,
We are happy to announce that we are launching a new photography campaign
for this year’s Independence day, named Share Your Struggle[1].
It is a public photo competition on Wikimedia Commons. The goal of the
project is to improve coverage of free usable media files related to
various struggles, such as social movements,
natural disasters, health crises such as COVID-19 pandemic, conflict-torn
areas, and any other humanitarian crises. The goal is not only to document
crises, but also humanitarian efforts and acts of kindness that happen
during such crises.
Given this is the first time and a pilot, the scope is limited to India
only and related to a specific incident or theme only. We are just getting
started to put this together to run the campaign, and it would be really
helpful to get more volunteers from the wider community to be involved in
organizing the campaign.
If you are interested, please fill in the volunteer sign up form[2]. Also,
feedback and
suggestions are welcome on the talk page[3]. For any queries contact

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing The New Grants Strategy for the Wikimedia
Foundation
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
(Note: The original thread can be seen on the web also:

)
Dear Wikimedians,
The Community Resources team is excited to announce on Diff
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2021/07/15/community-resources-announces-new-fun…>
the launch of the new Wikimedia funding strategy focused on decentralized
decision-making, regional committees and reaching underrepresented
communities [1]. Over the last 10 months we have worked together with
communities to discuss, understand and develop an approach that addresses
their needs and moves us towards the realization of the 2030 strategic
direction [2]. Thank you for all of your participation to make this a
reality.
The three new funding programs:
The Wikimedia Community Fund
-
The Community Fund is a unified program with flexible support and
funding for Wikimedians working on knowledge equity aligned with the
movement’s strategic direction.
The Wikimedia Alliances Fund
-
The Alliances Fund, for mission-aligned organizations in
underrepresented communities who want to collaborate and amplify our work.
The Wikimedia Research and Technology Fund
-
The Research and Technology Fund for improving technology, tools, and
research to nurture a more responsive and accessible environment for
contributions.
This people-centred approach is built on the principles of equity &
empowerment, collaboration & cooperation, and the promotion of innovation
and learning.
Our team has also adapted to provide consistent regional support and the
establishment of a learning mindset for the funding approach. We know this
is just the beginning and it will be an iterative process. As we implement
and learn we will adapt. We also understand the worldwide impact of the
continuing COVID pandemic and our first priority is to be in solidarity and
have flexibility with communities around the world.
The three programs will be introduced in a phased approach throughout the
year. We will first launch with the Wikimedia Community Fund now in July.
We invite you to learn more about the programs on our meta page [3].
We have hosted a series of office hours throughout June and July [4] and
will continue in the coming weeks to discuss the new programs. Each program
officer is also reaching out and answering questions with individual
grantees as part of the transition process.
Office Hours:
-
03:00 UTC – 2021-07-23 (Asia-Pacific friendly time)
-
18:00 UTC – 2021-07-23 (Europe-Africa-Americas friendly time)
We thank you again for all of the collaboration to arrive at this new
strategy and we are excited to begin this journey together.
Wishing everyone the best,
Kassia on behalf of the Community Resources team

done online on a 1:1 basis, so it is just the right time to participate
there if you have not planned to do so.
So please apply here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Indic_Wikisource_Helpdesk/Intensive_Persona…>
