[Press]: Lessons and tips on getting media coverage

Dear all, Over the past one month, we've been working with community members from Assamese, Kannada Malayalam and Nepali communities to get maximum possible media coverage and press support in order to highlight their community and events and hopefully get new editors for our movement. In all cases, I help prepare the press release<http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%B5%E0%B4%BF%E0%B4%95%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%95%…>(as, kn, ml, ne), then community members translate it and then we work together to try and reach out to the widest possible audience. Radio Nepal Bani Broadcasted an interview with Wikipedians located in Kathmandu (Mr. Ganesh Paudel and Mr. Saroj Dhakal) Just thought I'd share a few pointers based on what went right and what could have been better on my part. This may help you in the future if you too are looking to get media attention for your community and events. A few lessons: *Planning:* - Database of contacts: We have put in place a fairly comprehensive database of English as well as local press, television and radio contacts. I'd be happy to share them with anyone who needs to get in touch with journalists. - In case of local language newspapers, calling a journalist/newspaper office or personally visiting them to give the press brief always works better than e-mailing. Most local language newspapers still prefer a hard copy of the brief or even ask for a fax sometimes. - For the Assamese anniversary celebrations, we had an agenda well in advance and we (the community members and I) made sure the press release was ready in English as well as in Assamese so we could send it out to newspapers, television channels and radio stations. - Regarding English language newspapers, it is always advisable to call first and then e-mail the brief to a senior editor as well as a staff reporter (at least two people within the organization) to ensure the story receives due attention. Attaching a few photographs of your past meetups is a good idea. - It is advisable to translate the press release and attach both versions while sending it to the journalist. - If you are planning to have an event on the weekend, make sure you call and e-mail much earlier during the week. *Event:* - Always make sure to invite the journalists to your event. This will not only help in getting a comprehensive story but will also encourage them to take up editing. - Dealing with news channels and radio stations: While DY 365 channel covered the Assamese meetup, other channels did not bother to follow up. For radio, it *only* works if you speak to them in local language. *Other tips:* - It is a *must* to put in a contact number of preferably an email ID at the end of a press release. Maybe all communities should have either a chapter email ID (like bengali(a)wikimedia.in) or a gmail ID run by an active community member. This can be super useful and will avoid giving out personal details. - Building a quote pool: How about we keep a few quotes from different community members on the basics - (examples: why I edit, how I edit, what is your message to fellow Marathi/Tamil/Gujarati speakers) ? Of course, quotes from people are crucial and must not be misused but, this can help the Chapter communications team too - Getting the article right: Spelling mistakes, misquoted information, erroneous figures are a common problem with Wikipedia stories. Although it may not always be possible, do request the journalist to show you the article before publishing it. - Targeting news agencies: After the Assamese press experience, I realized having one PTI press release ensures that the story reaches at least 4-5 newspapers. This is a very effective way of maximizing media coverage. I might have missed out on a few lessons and invite community members and the chapter communication team to contribute with more inputs. This is in spite of the fact that the last year, we have been doing many activities & making great strides in reaching out to the community.Apart from that,Wikimedia India has also not been open about the obstacles which currently our organization is facing. 1.) No Monthly Reports were being circulated by the Office Bearer’s at Wikimedia India. Major updates regarding to different activities were given to the community, but a periodic update was not given to the community The Executive Committee (EC) along with the Program Director recognize the negligence in this regard. An assurance regarding the same has been provided in this regard. On the first Monday of every month, we shall be submitting our monthly report to the community. 2.) Inability to Conduct Annual General Meeting for 2014-2015: The Office Bearers have already been apologetic in this regard. An assurance has been provided that efforts are being undertaken to process it as soon as possible. 3.) Current Financial obstacle faced by the Chapter: We are in Process of renewing our FCRA license , but due to this,the Chapter at present is facing financial challenges. To tackle these problems ,we are taking guidance from senior community members & founding members of the chapter. Signing off as WMIN Program Director

Hi, Effective 01 February 2016, I have changed the nature of my engagement with Wikimedia India (WMIN) from staff to volunteer. I joined WMIN when the overall scene in the Indian Wikimedia movement was tumultuous. It wasn’t easy getting things back on track. In the last 16 months, I hope I have succeeded in restoring the trust of all stakeholders including WMF, CIS-A2K, and the community. It was an honour to represent the movement in India, and I thank all who have helped me shoulder this responsibility. I know that I have played my part in empowering at least one Wikimedian to contribute more actively and nurturing at least one Wikimedia community. And that gives me immense satisfaction as I sign off as WMIN’s Program Director. At the moment, WMIN cannot hire or retain any staff until it gets FCRA permanent registration and succeeds in securing next grant. I hope to continue serving WMIN as a volunteer to the best of my abilities while it undergoes this transition. I will also be contributing to various Wikimedia projects and events as usual in my capacity as a volunteer. I wish WMIN all the best and look forward to it playing a bigger role in the movement as it matures. Thanks, Ravi

We look forward to hear any feedback or input you might have. == WikipediansSpeak: Odia Wikisourcer shares her journey and goals == The most active editor on the Odia Wikisource ( https://or.wikisource.org/wiki/ପ୍ରଧାନ_ପୃଷ୍ଠା) is Pankajmala Sarangi ( https://or.wikisource.org/wiki/ବ୍ୟବହାରକାରୀ:Pmsarangi), a native of Odisha who now lives in New Delhi, where she works at a non-profit. As a leader in a broad community that is dominated by males ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_bias_on_Wikipedia)—indeed, she is the most active contributor to the Odia-language Wikisource —we asked her to share her journey and her goals to grow the project and community as part of the “WikipediansSpeak (http://blog.wikimedia.org/tag/wikipediansspeak/)” interview series. What is the community like on the Odia Wikisource? Pankajmala feels that the community is like her home. “I can’t tell how happy I am after seeing that this one year-old project has already digitized over 200 books. With more and more youth coming on the internet, the internet won’t disappoint them when the type and search in Odia language.” What are projects that you would like to start or get help from the existing community to grow? Forming expert /resource groups to increase the thematic group structure in the community so that each group could work collaboratively for specific goals. ⬤ We can also create groups through the help of the resident welfare associations in Odisha cities where Odia WikiTungis (in Odia Wikimedia community city based informal groups have been started that actively organize outreach and engage with new Wikimedians) are already working. They can work hand-in-hand. This will help us expand this program to more new places. ⬤ We can tie up with basic computer training institutes where their students and new Wikimedians who do not have access to computer/internet could learn about Odia Wikipedia editing as a vocational training. These institutes remain idle during day time and get busy after 4 pm as schools and college students come to learn about computer basics after their class hours. ⬤ One idea could be involving veterans whose expertise could help improve the quality of the articles which is otherwise going in vain after retirement. Post retirement life is otherwise lonely and many feel worthless who could enjoy the company of many new friends. The third edit-a-thon of this series was conducted at the Centre for Proficiency Development and Placement Services (CPDPS), Manasa Gangotri, University of Mysore. 30 participants participated and actively edited Kannada Wikipedia during this workshop. ⬤ Telugu Wikipedia Education Program at Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada 12-13 January, ( http://cis-india.org/openness/events/telugu-wikipedia-education-program-at-…): In collaboration with the Andhra Loyola College (ALC), Vijayawada, CIS-A2K opened up a Wikipedia Digital Centre in the institution. As part of this two-day program an edit-a-thon was also organized. 40 undergraduate students (10 each from Botany, Statistics, Physics and Telugu departments) contributing in creating articles in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil Wikipedias. ⬤ Konkani-language Edit-a-thon and English-Romi Konkani dictionary release ( cis-india.org/a2k/news/100-konkani-articles-added-to-wikipedia-in-one-day): On 14 January a one-day edit-a-thon was organized at Krishnadas Shama Central Library, Goa. Rahmanuddin Shaik on behalf of CIS-A2K participated in this event and helped in mentoring the participants. Almost 100 new articles were created on Konkani Wikipedia on this day. On the same day, an English-Romi (Latin is also known as Romi in Konkani) Konkani dictionary was released. The dictionary contains English equivalent of 21,760 Konkani words. ⬤ Geographical Indications in India Edit-a-thon (25 January-10 February 2016) ( https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Events/Geographical_Indications_in_…): A multi-lingual online edit-a-thon was organized with the theme of creating or expanding articles related to Geographical Indications of India. Resignation of Noopur Raval from WMIN
