Hi,
WMIN chapter president Rahul Deshmukh attended Wikimania 2018 in Cape Town
without being selected for any type of scholarship. My question is why was
he sent to the conference depriving other community members from India who
were in the waiting list.
He spoke in the informal chairpersons' meetup for few minutes. The meeting
doesn't require president of the organization's presence, and already there
were 2 EC member of WMIN present, who could have attended the meeting.
To me, this is utter misuse of power and abuse of donation money.
Thanks,
Bodhisattwa
Dear all,
I am happy to announce that the applications for "TWL Con (2019 India)"[1],
a mini-conference around The Wikipedia Library (TWL)[2] and library
outreach for Wikimedia projects in India are now open. Due to limited time,
we're not able to spare much time for responses, kindly accept
my apologies. The application period is 19–25 November 2018.
In brief about the event:
TWL helps active editors access reliable sources to improve Wikipedia.
Among several other programs, it also helps knowledge professionals share
their collections with the public. TWLCon (2019 India) is an upcoming
conference to increase awareness about TWL to Wikimedians in India and
discuss strategising TWL activities in India. This event has been primarily
designed to understand the needs and document the insights from experienced
Wikimedians about libraries/sources (references) in India. More about the
event may be referred from the event page.
The application form is at: https://goo.gl/forms/NvwYttEeCFfl30rG3; last
date 25 November 2018.
The event is to be held in the first or second weeks of Jan 2019
(tentative); Venue will be informed later.
The eligibility guidelines are applicable as mentioned here [3].
Kindly let me know if you have further questions.
Thanks

An advanced Wikidata training will take place on 15-16 December 2018 in
Mumbai (most possibly). Asaf Bartov will be the primary trainer of this
workshop.
Background and objectives
In India a few Wikidata trainings took place in recent years, notably User:Asaf
(WMF)/2017 Technical trainings in India
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Asaf_(WMF)/2017_Technical_trainings_in…>.
After this training of Asaf, we saw several Wikidata developments in India
including the formation of WikiProject India, a few label-a-thons, and
Indian Independence label-a-thon. Now, we are trying to take the Wikidata
experience in India to the next level.
The plan is:
Wikimedians in India who are
- actively working on Wikidata and
- aware of basic Wikidata editing
will attend the training to
- learn more about advanced Wikidata editing
- plan future Wikidata activities in India
Please learn more about this workshop:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Events/Advanced_Wikidata_Training_2…
The link above hopefully covers required details about the event, and, if
you have questions, please let me know. Kindly spread the words to
deserving Wikimedians.

** Q12068060 is "Hello" and "Q17297777" is "friend" on Wikidata :-)

Hello,
I recently saw an email from Odia Wikimedia that they are organising month
long editathons for Men's Hockey World Cup. This is a great initiative!
And also gave me the idea to do something similar in November. As many of
you may know Delhi
<https://www.firstpost.com/sports/womens-world-boxing-championships-to-start…>
will host the Women's World Boxing Championship from 15 - 24 November.
Could we all hold online and offline events around this topic editing and
creating pages of women boxers etc across several Indic languages.
I will definitely organise one Wikipedia editathon in Delhi in November on
this topic and would love if other people can join us and/or organise their
own in their language communities.
Tito/CIS, can we get some help for this?
Let me know your thoughts.
Best,
Japleen

Hello,
We just completed Indic Wikisource consultation 2018, and one of the most
important part of the consultation was the Wikisource tech needs-assessment
We have got a few tools and scripts suggestion which Indic TechCom may work
on.
Meanwhile, please have a look at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Indic-TechCom/Tools/IndicOCR or the tool
link directly https://tools.wmflabs.org/jayprakashbot/
This is a web OCR tool. Currently Google OCR does not support the following
languages and it will help there
1. Malayalam Wikisource
2. Telugu Wikisource
3. Odiaa Wikisource
4. Gujarati Wikisource
5. Kannada Wikisource
6. Punjabi Wikisource
I'll keep the list informed about further development.
Thanks
Tito Dutta

Hi everyone,
The community wishlist survey is on-
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019
I have submitted a proposal regarding *Tool for easy science editing using
a linked dictionary. *
During WWWW, a lot of editors were having issues with finding appropriate
medical terms in their native language as it is difficult and
time-consuming. Also, the different terms are used in different languages
for one subject matter, which leads to confusion. So, in order to
facilitate the editors to create content and also to standardize the
terminology being used, it will be better if we have some linked system of
providing translated names (for the desired language) for the standard
medical terms (in English)in a single command. I have proposed to run the
pilot on one language and depending upon the outcome, it may later be
provided to other languages.
*The link to the proposal is- *
*https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019/Editing/Tool_for_easy_science_editing_using_linked_dictionary
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019/Editing/Tool…>*
If you feel the need is genuine and the tool might prove assistive in
uncomplicated content writing, please support the proposal.
