Hello all,
Please help pick a name for the new Wikimedia wiki project.
This project will be a wiki where the community can work together on a
library of functions.[1] The community can create new functions, read
about them, discuss them, and share them. Some of these functions will
be used to help create language-independent Wikipedia articles that
can be displayed in any language, as part of the Abstract Wikipedia
project. But functions will also be usable in many other situations.
There will be two rounds of voting, each followed by legal review of
candidates, with broad voting beginning on 29 September and 27
October. Our goal is to have a final project name selected on 8
December. If you would like to participate, then please learn more and
vote now at meta-wiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Abstract_Wikipedia/Wiki_…
Thank you.

Hi everyone,
There is now an additional way to browse Wikipedia in India! We are happy
to confirm that the Wikipedia app is available on the top 3 mobile phone
operating system platforms in India - Android, iOS and newly KaiOS, which
is provided through Jiophones [1]. Jiophone users can download and install
the Wikipedia app on the JioStore.
This first release is focused on how to make it easier to read Wikipedia on
a phone that does not have a touch screen. The platform supports over 100
languages for reading, and we appreciate that volunteers have fully
translated the Wikipedia app user interface into five Indian languages so
far: Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Odia, and Punjabi. The app will continue to
have updates and reach more countries over time.
If you (or someone you know) own a Jiophone, please give the app a try by
downloading it from the JioStore. We would like to hear about your
experience with it. Let us know about issues or bugs through the in-app
feedback feature, through the project talk page [2], or through Phabricator
[3].
To enable the app to reach readers in even more Indian languages, we would
greatly appreciate additional translations of the user interface on
Translatewiki.net [4].
To know more about the app and our work, and why we believe this project is
so important to help us reach new users, you can see the main page for the
app [5] and the Questions and Answers page [6]. We welcome your comments,
suggestions, and feedback on the related talk page [2].
Lastly, please, do share this message on other venues of interest for
community members in India.
Kind regards,

Hello Wikimedians,
We are very happy to announce that the Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in India
is starting from tomorrow and will continue for the entire month of
September.
As this year, we are facing devastating effects of COVID-19, we urge you
to stay inside your home to avoid exposure to the deadly virus. You do not
have to go outside of your safe zone to photograph monuments. We are
completely okay if you can upload old photographs taken by you. Please be
safe first!
We are also expecting lesser participation than previous years due to the
restriction of movement due to the pandemic. So, to increase awareness
about the competition, we have created a promotional video at the last
moment (special thanks to Ananya and Rahul) and boosted it on Facebook.
Thanks to CIS-A2K for sponsoring the promotion part.
You can find the video on Commons here -
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020_in_India_…
and on Facebook here - https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1616065545227639
Regarding the list of monuments, it will grow even during the competition
as the data entry is a continuous work for us throughout the year. We
heartily welcome Wikimedians from different parts of the country to work on
monuments protected by different local agencies and inform us in the event
talk page. We will find ways together to include them in the master list.
Just like previous years, we again promising to wrap up everything within
the expected timeline after the competition ends and we are going to keep
our promise again. :-)
Welcome you all in the competition,
Regards,
Bodhisattwa

wiki-event. This is an edit-a-thon on Mahatma Gandhi and his works and the
event is not restricted to any particular project.
Please see the event page here:

Dear Wikimedians,
The chapter agreement recognizing Wikimedia India ended on September 14,
2019 -- officially ending the chapter's status as a recognized Wikimedia
movement affiliate. In this email, we are providing background information
and suggestions about how to participate in active organizations supporting
Wikimedia in India. Furthermore, the purpose of this communication is to
notify the Indian communities about the status of the former Wikimedia
India Chapter and to share brief background information to clarify the
timeline of communications with the former affiliate.
It has come to the Affiliation Committee’s (AffCom) attention that the
formerly-recognized chapter in India has continued to operate using the
Wikimedia name and trademarks. Recognition as a Wikimedia movement
affiliate -a chapter, thematic organization, or user group- is a privilege
that allows an independent group to officially use the Wikimedia trademarks
to further the Wikimedia mission.
While most affiliates adhere to the basic compliance standards set forth in
their agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation, a protocol exists to
address the exceptional cases when a Wikimedia affiliate fails to maintain
the specified compliance standards and its continued recognition as a
Wikimedia affiliate presents a risk to the Wikimedia movement [1].
On November 10, 2018, Wikimedia India was notified of its suspension as a
Wikimedia affiliate due to long-standing non-compliance with reporting
requirements. Along with the notice, the chapter was provided with an
explicit list of tasks and deadlines as action items to return to
compliance with its chapter agreement. The chapter could not manage, or
failed, to take the corrective actions by the deadline of May 30, 2019, and
was consequently notified in June that it would no longer be recognized as
a Wikimedia chapter after the termination of their Chapter Agreement on
September 14, 2019. Even though Wikimedia India is presently not a
Wikimedia affiliated group, they are still obligated to abide by the
guidelines and permitted trademark usage policy. For that reason, we once
again ask that the group immediately ceases to use the Wikipedia trademarks
while not an officially recognized Wikimedia affiliate organization.
October 7, 2019, following some back and forth on the chapter’s meta talk
page about specific criteria [2], the committee communicated via email to
the Executive Committee to reaffirm that the September revocation was final
and to remind the former chapter of required next steps for ending all use
of “Wikimedia” wordmark, the Wikimedia logo, or any other Wikimedia
trademarks as an organization.
If you have questions about what this means for community members in the
affected affiliates’ regions or languages, we have put together a very
basic FAQ [3]. Feel free to ask additional questions on the Wikimedia India
meta talk page [2]. For a list of affiliates and their compliance status,
please consult the affiliate status page on Meta [4]; there is also a page
linked from there that lists formerly-active affiliates.
The Wikimedia Foundation remains committed to supporting volunteer editors,
contributors, readers, and donors across India. We recognize that Wikimedia
has a very engaged and growing community in India who together have created
a significant and lasting impact within our global movement. We continue to
support Indian community user groups who lead meet-ups, contests, and other
local events.
Wikimedia India was not the sole representative of the movement in India,
and there are many other new and existing affiliates in the region. AffCom
stands ready to support the remaining affiliate members and Indic
communities in their continuing efforts to collaboratively grow the
affiliate infrastructure of the movement in India. We are deeply grateful
for the efforts of Indic communities to support Wikimedia’s free knowledge
mission and we look forward to continuing this work together.
Regards,
AffCom

Subject: Create Searchable Tamil PDF using PDF/A in libreoffice writer
To: <ilugc(a)freelists.org>
Creating searchable Tamil PDF is a long time dream for Tamil People.
For so many reasons like PDF standards, Unicode Issues with Tamil,
Issues with rendering engines, etc, we could not copy/paste any tamil
content from PDF files.
We have a issue for this here
https://github.com/KaniyamFoundation/ProjectIdeas/issues/78
Today morning, I was reading this issue and explored about PDF files.
Found a PDF/A standard. It promised to give Unicode support. Is it
means a PDF/A file in Tamil is searchable?
YES. YES. YES.
Tested this using Libreoffice Writer and yeah. It works. I can copy
the tamil text as it is and even do a search within the PDF.
Here is a demo video on this in Tamil.
