Greetings,
I am happy to introduce you to the Featured Wikimediam for April
2018, Sangram Keshari Senapati (User:Ssgapu22
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth/Ssgapu22>) from Odia
Wikimedia community.
Sangram is an active Odia Wikimedian from Bhadrk, Odisha. Sangram was
introduced to Wikipedia by his senior at college. He later signed up, and
created two articles on English Wikipedia. Upon knowing about Odia
Wikipedia, he started contributing to it. But as his writing skills were
not good, he used to proofread works on Odia Wikisource, and from that
experience he learnt the exact pattern of writing in Odia. He recalls that
users MKar and Psubhashish greatly helped him during his initial days.
>From his contributions, it can be said that Sangram is an ambassador of
#100Wikidays challenge. After having participated in Rathajatra
Edit-a-thon, Nabakalebara Edit-a-thon, and Wikipedia Asian Month in 2016 &
2017, he decided to regularly commit himself towards improving the coverage
of information on Odia Wikipedia. His first challenge was #100WikiWomanDays
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ssgapu22/100WikiWomenDays>, which he
started on 8 March 2017 i.e. International Women's Day. Having successfully
completed it on 15 June, he took up another #100Wikidays
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ssgapu22/100wikidays(2nd_Challenge)>
on 13 July. Immediately after its completion 20 October, he took up his
third challenge
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ssgapu22/100wikidays(3rd_Challenge)>
on 21 October, and completed it on 28 January 2018. As this journey
continues, he is now amid of his fourth Challenge
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ssgapu22/100wikidays(4th_Challenge)>,
which was started on 29 January. With these, he aspires to complete his
WikiYear some day.
Sangram is a graduate in Computer Science and Engineering, and is now
working as an editor at an Odia magazine. He also an avid photographer, and
maintains a photography club. He advocates that new editors need to focus
on learning the rules of Wikipedia, and contribute to good quality articles.
Wishing him all the best to to complete his WikiYear;
Best,
Krishna Chaitanya Velaga

Hi Wikimediaindia-l,
I’m the product manager for Map Improvements 2018 [1], at the Wikimedia Foundation. I’m glad to see enthusiasm for internationalized maps! I have answers for a few of your questions.
Naveen muses:
>I am not aware of the re-usage policy. Someone from WMF team should clarify...
Gladly. Our maps terms of use [2] state that we do allow use by third parties, though there is a concern about over-use, so we request that third parties "please respect our limited services and resources.” There are also some specific requests about providing info, in case we need to get in touch with you, and a caveat that:
We reserve the right to discontinue or change our service, block or limit certain users or applications, or take other measures in cases at our sole discretion at any time without notice.
So this is something that may or may not work for you, depending on how large and intensive your map service is. Please have a look at the terms or use if you’re interested in proceeding.
In answer to Dhaval Sudhanva Vyas’ question about seeing a mix of different languages, Naveen is correct to quote the Special Update on Map Internationalization [3], which is the best source of information on how this all works. I encourage anyone interested to have a look.
You may also wish to experiment with internationalized maps on testwiki or testwiki2 [4], where the features are currently working. And here is a page on testwiki2 that shows examples [5]. Later today, I’ll post a deeper dive into how our service interacts with OpenStreetMap data, and some of the anomalies that can arise from that interaction.
So please give internationalized maps a try and leave comments on the project talk page [6]. Depending on the types of comments we get in the next few weeks, we hope to be able to release internationalized maps to all Wikipedias in the next month or so.
Yours,
Joe
