Hi all,
i just go through a interesting survey regarding Top Indic
wikipedians, This survey was carried out by Hindi wikipedians to measure
Activeness of all Indic Sysops.Generally we count no of edits but No of
sysop actions are also an interesting thing that how much a sysop is active
in his sysop activities. This parameter is also a good measure for any
wikiproject active community and controll over vandalism.Link for This
survey is as following-
http://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%95%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%AA%….
We just tried to share an interesting stastics and I hope it will bring some
good creativity between Indic Sysops.
Thanks and Regards

cross posting to Offline & Wikimedia-India.
Hi
I'm working on the Wikimedia Foundation's initiatives in India and I'm reaching out for help on a really exciting opportunity. Assam is a state in the North-East of India. The Government has an interesting scheme to give laptops to deserving students leaving secondary school (i.e., completed 10 years of education and about 15-16 year olds.) This scheme is being managed by an organisation called Amtron - who have issued a Tender for the procurement of these laptops.
There are 19,000 laptops that will be distributed in this initiative. (These are on Ubuntu Linux - and very reasonably configured.)
Assam has traditionally had a problem with infrastructure and Internet access is a problem. Someone who is supporting Amtron has asked the Foundation if we can give them an offline version of Wikipedia to pre-load onto these computers. Given that it is for 15-16 age group, it does need to be of appropriate content. They'd like it to have topics of academic interest covered (e.g., classical sciences, humanities, literature and accountancy.) Ideally we'd like them to also have articles on India (e.g. history, geography, culture, etc.) as well as other areas of general interest (e.g., music, sports, etc.) Currently, everything is required in English only.
While these laptops aren't going to necessarily be in classrooms, given that they will be with some students, it's safe to assume that other students, friends and relatives would access these. Given the context of Assam, I thank we can easily assume that 10 people would access these computers. That adds up to improving access for nearly 2,00,000 people! I'm really inspired by the potential of this partnership because because it allows us huge scale with efficiency in effort.
I understand that Wikipedia for Schools is readying for release sometime in July 2011 - and the timing couldn't be better.
Can you help us out with
a) how you could help on adding the additional articles that this initiative would require? (You could also sign up on the Volunteer Page)
b) how fast this can be given to Amtron? (They are looking for the inputs in July 2011.)
c) any other ideas that you think might be useful?
Many thanks.
Best,

Dear Indic language wikipedians,
The logos of some of the Indic language wikipedias are updated recently.
Following are those wikipedias:
- Marathi - http://mr.wikipedia.org/
- Kannada - http://sa.wikipedia.org/
- Sanskrit - http://kn.wikipedia.org/
- Odia (Oriya) - http://or.wikipedia.org/
Among this, the Odia wikipedia logo is updated yesterday and is done by a
new wikipedian. Thanks to Subhashish who started editing in Odia wikipedia
recently. He had done a wonderful job.
The logos for the following language wikipedias still need to be updated.
- Assamese - http://as.wikipedia.org
- Bhojpuri - http://bh.wikipedia.org
- Bishnupriya Manipuri - http://bpy.wikipedia.org/
- Divehi - http://dv.wikipedia.org
- Gujarati - http://gu.wikipedia.org
- Hindi - http://hi.wikipedia.org
- Kashmiri - http://ks.wikipedia.org/
- Nepali - http://ne.wikipedia.org
- Pali - http://pi.wikipedia.org
- Punjabi - http://pa.wikipedia.org
- Sindhi - http://sd.wikipedia.org
- Tamil - http://ta.wikipedia.org
Hope the logos will be updated soon by the respective language community.
Kindly create a new logo, upload it to commons, and log a bug in bugzilla.
In case you require any assistance please contact me.

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Updating the logo of Indian Language Wikipedias
To: "Discussion list on Indian language projects of Wikimedia." <
wikimediaindia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Indic language wikipedians,
As many of you know the default skin of wikipedias (including that of all
Indic language wikipedias) is moved to the new Vector skin some time back.
Please see the below mail that I sent to this list regrading this on *2010
July 1*.
As some of you know, along with this update, the logo of wikipedia is also
updated. The current logo is available
here<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia/2.0>.
But even though almost 6 months had passed after this major update, only
Bengali <http://bn.wikipedia.org>, Malayalam
<http://ml.wikipedia.org>, Urdu<http://ur.wikipedia.org>,
and Telugu <http://te.wikipedia.org> wiki communities had took initiatives
to update the logo. The logo update is still pending for the following
Indian language wikis.
- Assamese - http://as.wikipedia.org
- Bhojpuri - http://bh.wikipedia.org
- Bishnupriya Manipuri - http://bpy.wikipedia.org/
- Divehi - http://dv.wikipedia.org
- Gujarati - http://gu.wikipedia.org
- Hindi - http://hi.wikipedia.org
- Kannada - http://kn.wikipedia.org/
- Kashmiri - http://ks.wikipedia.org/
- Marathi - http://mr.wikipedia.org
- Nepali - http://ne.wikipedia.org
- Oriya - http://or.wikipedia.org
- Pali - http://pi.wikipedia.org
- Punjabi - http://pa.wikipedia.org
- Sanskrit - http://sa.wikipedia.org
- Sindhi - http://sd.wikipedia.org
- Tamil - http://ta.wikipedia.org
Carry Bass (User:Bastique <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Bastique>)
has took initiative to create the new logo for some of the Indian language
wikis. But for languages like Kannada, Oriya, and so on even that is
pending. Even if the new logo is created a bug needs to be filed by the
respective wiki community to change the logo. So for most of the Indian
wikis both these tasks are pending now.
I request the respective language communities to take initiatives to create
the new logo and file a bug for this update. The guidelines for creating the
new logo is listed at
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/Word_mark_crea…
Please write to me if any of the language communities require any type of
support regarding this.
Regards
Shiju Alex

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Updating the default skin of Indian Language
Wikipedias
Hi All,
As some of you already know, *Usability Team<http://usability.wikimedia.org>
* is driving the task of updating the default skin of all WikiMedia
Foundation wikis to a skin called
*Vector*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vector>.
English Wikipedia and some other big wikis have already moved to *Vector
skin* some time back. Apart from the UI, the logo of Wikipedia is also
updated <http://blog.wikimedia.org/2010/wikipedia-in-3d/>.
Yesterday (2010 June 30) at 10:30 PM IST, some other wikis (that have
carried out the formalities required for the UI change) are also moved to
the new UI. Among this, 3 Indian Language Wikipedias are also there.
Following are those Indian Language wikipedias:
- Malayalam - http://ml.wikipedia.org
- Bengali - http://bn.wikipedia.org
- Telugu - http://te.wikipedia.org
Please note the new default skin and the new logo that are appearing on
these wikis. (You may need to clear the cache to see the changes. )
Now to move your language wiki to Vector, you have to perform the following
two major operations:
1. Update the logo of your wiki
2. Localize the Vector skin system messages
Logo update
For some languages, logo is already updated. See the list here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia/2.0
If your wiki's logo is missing from this list, then you need to create the
new logo based on the instructions listed on this page.
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/About_the_offi…
Localizing the Vector skin System messages
For the current update, you need to localize the Vector skin system
messages. To localize the system messages, use Translate wiki -
http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Main_Page
The current Localization statistics of Vector skin system messages is
available here. http://translatewiki.net/wiki/User:GerardM/usability-stats
You can see that many Indian languages (for example, Tamil) are missing from
this list. The reason is, none of the Vector skin system messages are
localized for those languages. Even for the big Languages like Hindi and
Marathi the percentage of localized messages is very low.
So I request the respective Indian Language Wikipedia communities to take
required initiative to switch over to the new Skin. Usability team is
planning for next set of switch over by the end of July. So you have
almost one month to finish these tasks.
Once you finish the above tasks you need to:
- Let the community know about this upcoming update (Use the village
pump, Site Notice, Mailing list, and so on)
- Appoint some volunteers to answer the questions related to this
- Appoint an ambassador to collect the feedback/issues/bugs and report it
to the Usability Team.
Please let me know in case you require any support regarding this.
Regards
Shiju Alex

To: Communications Committee <wmfcc-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
India: the Future of Wikipedia
http://globalvoicesonline.org/2011/06/30/india-the-future-of-wikipedia/
Wikipedia, the free online encyclopaedia, celebrated its tenth
anniversary this year, and almost 100 cities and towns in India
registered to host celebrations, the highest number of any country.
Wikipedia is the fourth most popular website in India, and there are
over 20 Wikipedia sites in Indian languages, with more on the way. The
Wikimedia Foundation's India Chapter was recently established in
Bangalore, to help coordinate the Indian language Wikipedia sites.
This year the Foundation will open its first office outside the United
States, in an Indian city as yet to be announced.
Global Voices has spoken to Tinu Cherian, blogger, active Wikipedian
and an administrator for the site, about Wikipedia in India.
Tinu Cherian (photo reproduced with permission)
Can you tell us a little about the Wikipedia community in India?
The Wikipedian community in India is a nascent but one of the fastest
growing user groups. Wikipedia and other sister projects enjoy top
five website readership in India but the scale of editors and
contributors to Wikimedia is relatively low compared to other
countries. Thanks to being a favorite of popular search engines, and
the lack of other such free knowledge sources, readership has never
been a problem.
Wikimeetups are real life gatherings or meetups of Wikipedians, which
are now very popular in India. In Sep 2006, Jimmy Wales came to
Bangalore and saw the first Wikimeetup in India. A Wikiconference at
Chennai in 2007 generated lots of interest and enthusiasm but
essentially couldn't keep the momentum. Since July 2009, we have
started regular Wikimeetups in Bangalore, meeting at least once per
month. Wikipedians in India now meet regularly in other cities like
Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune and Hyderabad.
The Wikimedia India Chapter was officially approved by the Foundation
in 2010 and became a registered body in 2011. Over 95 cities and towns
in India registered to host the 10th anniversary celebrations of
Wikipedia in 2011, the largest among all countries. The Bangalore
celebrations witnessed over 250 attendees for the one day programme.
In 2010, the Wikimedia Foundation identified India as one of the
strategic locations for development of Wikimedia and is close to
setting up its first ever office outside the United States.
Do you have a sense of how popular the Indian language sites are in
comparison with the English site? Which are the largest Indian
language sites?
English Wikipedia was always the favorite and best-known Wikipedia in
India but recently the awareness of Indic language Wikipedias has been
on the rise. There are 20 Indic language Wikipedias already and
another 20 are in an incubation state. Assamese, Punjabi, Nepali,
Oriya (Odia) and Malayalam were the first Indian language Wikipedias
to be started in 2002. Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and other languages were
created in the next two years. There is a varied level of activity
among the different language Wikipedias. Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and
Bengali have very active Wikipedia communities. Hindi has the largest
number of articles which is set to cross the 1 lakh [100 000] articles
milestone any time soon. We are now working on building the
communities for the dormant Wikipedias by spreading awareness among
the native speakers of those languages.
Malayalam Wikipedia
What about internet access – isn’t Wikipedia dependent on people
having internet connections?
Wikipedia is all about the sum total of human knowledge available to
all mankind. Unfortunately, it was all web-based. Wikipedians are now
making efforts to bring them to those who don't have access to the
internet, by publishing offline versions of Wikipedia. Malayalam
Wikipedia published the first offline CD of Wikipedia among the
non-Latin script languages. Malayalam is also in the process of
releasing the first Wikisource in any Indian language.
You live in Bangalore, so we can probably guess the answer to the
question: Mumbai, New Delhi or Bangalore? Which is the best location
for the Wikimedia Foundation in India?
As a true Bangalorean, personally, I would love to see the Wikimedia
office in Bangalore. Bangalore has a vibrant Wiki community
contributing to different language Wikipedias. Wikipedians in
Bangalore meet regularly, at least once per month. Bangalore is also
the seat of the Wikimedia India chapter. But for the growth of the
pan-India Wikimedia movement, it is advisable to be Mumbai or Delhi.
But it is entirely up to the Wikimedia Foundation to decide where they
find it feasible and suitable. The foundation is now actively
considering it in Delhi or the National Capital Region (NCR).
You are very active on Twitter, with more than 56 000 followers. Is
there a connection between your enthusiasm for social media and your
involvement with Wikipedia?
I have always loved to interact with people both in the real and
virtual worlds. I share knowledge on Wikipedia and share news and
other information with others on Twitter. Twitter is my own way of
connecting with a global audience. Of course, I also promote Wikipedia
and Wikimedia events on Twitter too.
