Subject: Looking for community advisors to Board committee on Brand
To: <wikiindaba(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, <wikimediaindia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>,
iberocoop(a)lists.wikimedia.org <iberocoop(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, <

Dear all,
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees has convened an ad hoc committee
on the Movement Brand Project. Three trustees were selected to head its
work, in close collaboration with the Brand team - Raju Narisetti, James
Heilman and myself. Seeking to improve the Brand Project process, we are
looking for community advisors to give input from various Wikimedia
movement perspectives. The goal is to re-launch the brand discussions with
a clear and transparent process in March 2021, and to conclude the
conversations with a decision by the end of the fiscal year (July 2021).
We are writing to you today to ask that you nominate 1 member from your
community to join us as advisors to the Brand Committee.
What will advisors do?
The Brand Committee is charged with developing and proposing changes to the
Movement Brand Project process. The committee will produce a proposal that
the full Board of Trustees will review and hopefully agree to adopt, if
aligned. Advisors will support us in recognizing key stakeholder community
perspectives on branding needs, processes and decision-making. They will
provide input and comments on proposed changes to process and offer working
solutions to challenges the committee encounters. Advisors will be able to
share ideas and ask questions to their communities, as needed. The full
process will be vetted and endorsed by advisors before the Board of
Trustees makes its final decision on adopting these proposed changes to
process and decision-making. After the proposed changes to process and
decision-making are adopted, the new process will be launched in March.
What kind of commitment is needed?
Advisors can expect 6-9 hours of activity a month, in January and February
2021, though we will be aiming to launch the joint process with a first
meeting during the second half of December. There will be opportunities to
join committee meetings with Board members & staff, or to watch recordings
of the meetings and provide feedback asynchronously. Documents and
proposals will be shared among advisors for comment, review and
suggestions.
What kind of advisor is the committee seeking?
The Brand Committee is looking for a small set of advisors who are able to
engage thoughtfully on the importance of branding to the Wikimedia
Movement’s 2030 goals. Advisors will be asked to reflect on more than
processes: they will be asked to think about the strategic goals of the
brand names and logos within the movement, and how to equitably structure
decisions around them. Ideal advisors therefore have experience
representing the movement to the public, as well as understand the internal
needs of the movement’s work as something multidimensional and open.
The number of advisors will be between 7 - 9 people, in an effort to
support active participation within the committee, and to keep the process
on track, to “un-pause” in March. By then we strive for a clear sense of a
process with which the broader community will be able to engage.
We have identified 3 main groups we would like advisors from:
-
2 advisors from affiliate leadership (Chairpersons or EDs)
-
2 advisors from the community, specifically, people who participated in
authoring the Community Open Letter on Renaming (COLOR)
-
2 additional advisors from the global south / emerging and
underrepresented communities*
-
1 advisor from AffCom
Please note:
* As the global south / emerging and underrepresented communities include a
variety of different groups, we are actively approaching Wiki Indaba,
ESEAP, IberoCoop, the India lists and the Brazilian community, asking each
to nominate one advisor (if I have missed a group you believe to qualify,
please let me know privately and I’ll be sure to approach them as well).
Out of all applications from these groups, 2 will be chosen to complement
the other 5 representatives (2 from affiliates, 2 from COLOR, 1 from
AffCom). Our goal would be to choose from groups that are not already
represented by other chosen advisors, with a special effort to be as
diverse and inclusive as possible.
* The committee might also directly invite up to 2 additional advisors, as
it sees fit.
How should advisors be nominated and added to the committee?
The committee is requesting all advisor nominations to be sent no later
than *December 12th* (2 weeks from today), as we would like to commence
work immediately, with a first joint meeting in mid-late December (before
the Xmas and New Year holidays). The committee will review applications and
make its final decision on advisors by December 15th.
We are asking your group to determine who will be the person to best
represent your perspective. Please email shani(a)wikimedia.org with your
nominations and include the following details:
-
Subject line: Nomination for the Brand Committee Advisors Task Force
-
Full name
-
Wiki Username
-
Affiliation
-
A short (!) paragraph on why you would like to be part of the process
and how you believe you can contribute.
Thank you all for your participation and contribution to this process!
Shani Evenstein Sigalov,
On Behalf of the Brand Committee,
Board of Trustees, Wikimedia Foundation.
Last week, we had a Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon 2020 event. see
here for full details
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Indic_Wikisource_Proofreadthon_2020
Though I did not participate in this event, (feels sad for this. Life
is too messy nowadays), I thought to build a small tool to give report
on any wikipedia user’s contribution on a given wikisite for a given
date range.
It may help to calculate, measure, decide on the contributions for
such competitions.
Mediawiki has a good API to fetch user contributions.
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Usercontribs
Get all edits by a user.
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/API:Usercontribs
For my wonder, there was a sample python code on the same page.
The code gave only 500 results. I wrote a loop to get the data batch
by batch till all the data is received.
Published the tool here –
https://github.com/tshrinivasan/wiki_user_contributions_report
How to run?
python3 get_user_contributions.py <language> <wikisite> <username>
<start_date> <end_date>
This will give the data as a CSV file. Used a csv-to-html converter
utility to convert this to a web page with all the data in a sortable
table.
For my wonder, my friend Dinesh Karthik, converted this as a nice web
application with flask, dash and hosted in heroku.
https://wiki-user-contributions.herokuapp.com/
Source : https://github.com/Dineshkarthik/wiki-user-contributions
Thanks to Info-farmer for providing the idea, Bartosz Dziewoński on
wikipedia mailing list for answering all my questions, Dinesh for
making a web application quickly.
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l
is a good place to ask any tech questions regarding wikipedia.
Thanks to all wikisource contributors for the event and in general.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Project Grants open call for proposals in 2021
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello Wikimedians,
I’m writing to announce the next opportunity for funding through the
Project Grants program, and to share changes in how review will happen in
the coming year and beyond.
Background context:
Over the past few months, the Wikimedia Foundation has begun work on a new
strategy for how we will structure our grants programs in the future, with
the goal of aligning more closely with the Wikimedia Movement’s 2030
Strategic Direction [1]. We’ve been having conversations with many
stakeholders in the Wikimedia community and we’re in the process of
brainstorming about possible frameworks to improve how we make grants. This
coming year, 2021, will be an experimental year in which we will pilot some
smaller changes as we move toward a larger redesign process later in the
year and beyond.
How do I learn more about applying for project funding through Project
Grants?
-
You can learn more about the guidelines for the Project Grants program
here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Learn
-
You can learn more about how to plan for a project proposal here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Plan
-
You can learn about how to apply here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Apply
What will change in the grant review process for Project Grants in 2021?
-
In previous rounds, all Project Grant proposals have been reviewed in
one round, inclusive of proposals related to four themes: research,
software, and online and offline community organizing. In 2021, we will
experiment with offering two separate and dedicated rounds. One will be
focused on online and offline community organizing. A second round will
focus on review of research and software grant proposals.
-
By offering separate, dedicated rounds, we hope to offer more tailored
support for applicants, with better integration with staff in the Wikimedia
Foundation who have relevant expertise, and with more focused Committee
recruitment to improve the quality of proposal review. We also hope it will
reduce the burden on volunteer committee reviewers in any given round.
When will community organizing grant proposals be accepted?
-
The open call will launch January 11, and the submission deadline is
February 10, 2021.
-
The full schedule is posted here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project
When will software and research grant proposals be accepted in 2021?
-
The open call will launch February 15, and the submission deadline is
March 16, 2021.
-
The full schedule is posted here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project
How will this affect currently funded Project Grants?
-
Our intention is to make sure that current projects will not be
interrupted by this change, both with regard to current or planned work.
Will there be other changes coming in the future?
-
After these rounds, we expect bigger changes for Project Grants.
-
We are currently in a strategic design process and have been actively
engaging many stakeholders from around the world to help us think about
what these changes should look like.
-
Once we have draft frameworks ready, there will be opportunities for
feedback from Wikimedia community members before any decisions are
finalized. We will keep you updated!
Please let us know if you have any questions about these changes or if you
would like to learn more about how to get involved in the strategic
redesign process for Project Grants.
Warm regards,
Marti

International Mother Language Day. The submission will remain open until 24
January 2021.
You can submit your session proposals here -
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Wikimeet_India_2021/Submissions
A program team has been formed recently from highly experienced Wikimedia
volunteers within and outside India. It is currently under the process of
expansion to include more diversity in the team. The team will evaluate the
submissions, accept, modify or reject them, design and finalise the program
schedule by the end of January 2021. Details about the team will come soon.
*Guidelines for submissions:*
* The sessions will be on any Wikimedia related topics.
* Submissions are not restricted to India. Wikimedians from outside India
are also welcome to submit proposals.
* The decision to accept or reject a submission will depend on the Program
Team. Their decision will be final.
* The event will have different formats of sessions, like presentations,
workshops, panel discussions and 5-minutes lightning talks.
* All sessions will be conducted online.
* The organisers will provide the support to help the presenter understand
the use of online platforms like Zoom etc prior to the event..
* The organisers will also communicate with the presenter prior to the
event to help understand the entire process, or for general preparation.
* A session can be around 20 minutes long or more. A lightning talk should
be no longer than 5 minutes.
* There can be more than one presenter in one session. Feel free to make a
group for your session.
* The presenters for long duration sessions must ensure that they will be
available for the preparation and during their sessions.
* The presenters for lightning talks however can pre-record their sessions
earlier, if they want and send it to the organizers to play the recording
during their allotted time.
* A session will be conducted in English or any Indian language.
* Similar topics may be grouped together, or format may be changed by the
program team. The program team will contact the session presenters if those
decisions are taken.
We are sure that you will share some of your most inspiring stories and
conduct some really exciting sessions during the event. Best of luck for
your submissions!

Dear Wikimedians,
Few months before we released the Spell4Wiki app. On that time Tamil
language only available for Spell4Wiktionary option. After that some of
wikimedians are requested to add their language. As of now 5 languages are
added in Spell4Wiktionary options and one more new language added.
*Short description about Spell4Wiki*
Spell4Wiki a GPLv3 licensed app to record and upload audio for
Wiktionary words to Wikimedia Commons. The app is also a multilingual
dictionary based on Wiktionary.
*App link : *
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manimarank.spell4wiki
*Update details*
- German, Bengali, Russian & Swedish languages are added in
Spell4Wiktionary option. Now, they can contribute their wiktionary words
easily.
- Dagbani language newly added. Actually the Dagbani languge don't have
Wiktionary. But, they can upload audios by using Spell4WordList and
Spell4Word options.
- Major Crashes and some defects are fixed
- New entry added in Tamil Embassy https://ta.wiktionary.org/s/4ojr
Dagbani language Wikimedians are most actively using this app and as of now
contributed voice for 1800+ words. Actually they plan to upload 4000 words
within this year's end.
I would like to thank the following people, for helping to add new language
and reporting issues.

Hello all,
The Community Development
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development> team at the
Wikimedia Foundation is launching the WikiLearn (Online Learning Pilot)
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn>, a
capacity-building project. This project will deliver two courses over an
8-week period that will begin on February 1, 2021. Courses are free to take
part in and will be hosted on Moodle <https://moodle.com/>. During this
pilot project, each course will be taught, and assignments are to be
prepared, in English. At the end of the pilot, we will be making course
materials available for anyone interested in self-study, and for
translation.
The two courses we will be launching on February 1, 2021, are:
1.
Identifying and Addressing Harassment
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn/Identifying…>:
This course will focus on developing skills that will help volunteers
respond to on- and off-wiki harassment.
-
This course will combine scheduled sessions and independent study.
The weekly commitment of this course is 2-3 hours per week.
-
Target Audience: Volunteers with administrator or other advanced user
rights.
1.
Partnership Building:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn/Partnership…>
This
intensive course will provide an in-depth curriculum on how to develop
meaningful programmatic and organizational partnerships within the movement
and with external partners.
-
This course will consist of scheduled sessions and individual
assignments with a weekly total commitment of up to 6 hours.
-
Target Audience: Volunteers with intermediate-level experience
contributing to Wikimedia projects and beginner-level experience with
building partners with Non-Wikimedia groups and organizations.
To ensure our small team can provide each learner individual support, we
are limiting each course in this pilot to 40 participants. We ask that all
interested applicants commit to attending weekly for the full course.
All efforts will be made to ensure that scheduled sessions are time-zone
friendly to the greatest number of enrolled participants. However, with the
wide distribution of volunteers, that may not always be possible.
Key Dates:
-
Applications open Today (December 1, 2020) and will close on January 14,
2021.
-
Successful applicants will be notified on January 18, 2021.
-
The first session for each course will be held on February 1, 2021.

Today we released the works of Dr. krishnananda Kamat and Dr. Jyotsna Kamat
under cc-by-nc-sa - The late dr. Krishnananda Kamat was known as kammatiga-
person who explores and practically does the work for himself. He was a
very well known to the kannada literary community through his writings,
books, cooking, photography and more. Even before Wikipedia became a great
source of knowledge his https://Kamat.com has been the source for many
indian art, history and culture related information. We can see Kamat.com
being cited in may wiki pages too. He has written both in kannada and
English. Dr. Jyotsna Kamat has her own contributions to our language and
needs a separate introduction. She helped us source all kamats books and
helping us archive more than 100k images taken by Dr. Kamat. We plan to
make them available through Wikimedia commons. His pictures cover a great
deal of indian society, art, nature etc. I have been fortunate to have been
able to get this initiative kickstarted through our Sanchi Foundation.
Special thanks to Vivek Kamat, Son of Dr. Krishnananda Kamat for making it
easier through his special support through out. We shall soon have an
update on the photograph, negatives and transparency scans! Jyotsna
kamats Education in Karnataka through ages might be an interesting read for
many in this group among others. All the works are available on internet
