Hoi,
India is a big country populated by many people speaking many languages. It
is no surprise that there are many wikipedias in languages spoken in India.
As you are active in organising a chapter for the Wikimedia Foundation, I
want to ask your collaboration on the localisation for the Indian languages
in MediaWiki. When you look at the statistics for the localisation of
MediaWiki and its extensions, you will find that the Indian languages are
not really supported. This in marked contrast with the experience when you
visit for instance the hi.wikipedia.org.
I want to ask you to collaborate on the central localisation of MediaWiki in
the "BetaWiki". Central localisation has big advantages, a user interface
will be properly supported in all Wikimedia Foundation projects and the
language will also be supported in Wikis outside of the Wikimedia
Foundation. At the moment more then hundred MediaWiki extensions are
supported in MediaWiki. Some are of specific importance for projects or
languages. As BetaWiki is appreciated more and more as the place to be for
MediaWiki localisation, this number grows and with it the potential for
collaboration.
The first step is to import the existing localisation from your active
projects in to BetaWiki. The next step is to make sure that all the messages
do not contain information that is specific to Wikipedia so that it is
indeed useful in other projects. Localisation of MediaWiki is important and
this makes it a requirement for new projects in a language. What is of more
relevance is that it is easier to edit a Wiki when the user interface is
consistent from one project to the next.
When we make it easier for people to read and edit MediaWiki, we will grow
the community of people that make our projects a success.
Thanks,
GerardM

The India map on several Wiki projects have the borders depicted
wrongly. The disputed areas between neighbouring nations seem to have
been ripped off from the map.
One such instance is this:

We ought to make sure that the usage of such incorrect maps are
discouraged. Anyone interested to volunteer in getting the maps
corrected all over?

Hi all.
Bids for Wikimania 2009 are going to open on Saturday. There is already an
unofficial India bid made at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2009/India. Should we bid for
Wikimania? By that time we should (hopefully) have an active India chapter
and more people too. Take a look at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2009 for more details. For all
those who are not aware - Wikimania is the annual conference of the
Wikimedia foundation. Wikimania 2007 was held in Taipei, Taiwan and was
attended by close to 500 people. Wikimania 2008 is going to be held in
Alexandria, Egypt (home to the first library in the world).
Do think and write your suggestions regarding Wikimania in India. We can
then decide a city and make the official bid.
Akash
Dear Nicolas,
It is interesting to know that there are more active wikipedians from
Ahamadabad. Can you give the pointer to the city-wise statistics of the
wikipedians ?

Vijay Barve
Dear all
As mentioned in link
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2009/India, and
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2009. I support the bid for
Wikimania's 2009 (annual conference of the Wikimedia foundation, after
the Wikimania 2008 is held in Alexandria, Egypt then decide a city and
make the official bid) made by Indian chapter, scheduled in New Delhi.
As far as event management is concerned, I can that responsibilty as

Hi Nicholas,
Can you please state where the discussion regarding membership and such happened and who the active members you mentioned are? I might've missed something. As far as I remember you asked in this list about willingness to join and several people including me had expressed interest. I noticed Utcursch's comparison of Trusts and Societies. Apart from these, I'm not aware of any discussion that happened.
I think that the Wikimedia chapter needs to have sufficient representation from as many Indian wikipedias as possible. Can we please have a detailed update in this list and the meta pages?
Regards,
Sundar

Hi Everyone,
I am a new to this mailing list and interested in being a part of the
process. I would also like to know more about the discussions that I might
have missed and in particular representations from different regions and
languages of India.
Thanks and Regards,
Srinidhi

Hi all,
An update on the Wikimedia India chapter formation. We are in the process of
finalizing the following:
* Trust vs Society
* Location of registration of trust
* Finalizing by-laws
1. Trust vs Society : Consensus favours the trust model
2. As many active wikipedians are based in Ahmadabad, the chapter will be
registered there.
3. By-laws are up on <
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_India/bylaws>. Please do
join in the discussions there. It is scheduled to be closed
on the 15th of December.
Regards,
--Nicholas
