Hey all,
After my chat with Lourie two weeks ago, I discussed a possible WikiLovesMonuments with Lodewijk. He was one of the guys that organised the first edition in the Netherlands, and he really helped me organising the edition last year in Belgium. The competition will go global this year: Europe, India, Chile, Canada, USA, Russia, Israel, Philippines, are sure they will participate this list (full list of particating countrieshttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Participating_countries). And he was looking forward to see South Africa join the competition!
More information on the competition is on Commons: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012 You can find a proposed organisational timelinehttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Timelinethat will help us with organising the event.
Maybe we could meet to chat about the possibilities, and see if we can find enough persons that are interested? I had already a first chat with Lourie two weeks ago. I propose a meeting, again in Cape Town: see the DOODLE http://www.doodle.com/m2ih8nhm2grka4xv

I like this. Some additional input:
Most monuments in South Africa are also registered as Heritage Sites by the South African Heritage Resources Agency
Photos and categories on Commons should add the following template, {{South African Heritage Site|1=xxxx}} where is the SAHRA id for the monument.
SAHRA maintains a searchable database at http://196.35.231.29/sahra/default.aspx

Thanks Nick! We just wondered the other day whether such a database exists.

Thanks everyone for this. Just an idea depending on the time to "tie in" with the Pretoria workshop which I know is train the trainers but could be an optimization of resources etc....The timeline is advanced already and will check my work/travel schedule to see how best I am able to contribute but very excited about this....

Thanks for sending out this message Maarten. I am actually currently busy going through all my Wikimedia emails and were about to send one out about our meeting. Thank you for contacting Lodewijk, we really appreciate it. I think that a lot of people will enjoy this competition and that there is definitely the possibility for success in the South African context. I checked on the Doodle event, lets see who else is available to meet with us.
Kind regards Lourie

Hi Lourie and Maarten
I would really like to attend this meeting, but the only times are afterhours, and I have a small child. Is it possible to do 4pm during the week of the 12th?
Please let me know as we were already quite far advanced in thinking about how to roll out Wiki Loves Monuments across Africa, and have some exciting news to share.
Warmest Isla

Hi Isla,
it sounds exciting that you're so interested in rolling out Wiki Loves Monuments even broader. I would encourage you to share those thoughts at an early stage through the general WIki Loves Monuments mailing list: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments That way others know about it too, and can help or advise and share their experiences.
As a sidenote: in case you would need a mailing list for a country's WLM-organization (not idea how suitable WikimediaZA mailing list is for that) please let me know, because I could probably get you one on lists.wmnederland.nl .
Best, Lodewijk
