announcement
Kind regards,
David Richfield: Secretary (Wikimedia South Africa)
Hello everyone,
Victor Grigas <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Victorgrigas>,
Wikimedia's official storyteller (he makes videos on stories and editors
involved in the Wikipedia project) will be coming down to Cape Town from
San Francisco on the 7 April. So of you who have attended Wikimania in the
past might have met him before when he was editing editors to feature in
Wikimedia's fund raising campaigns in 2011 and 2012.
He is currently looking to interview Wikipedians (both current and former)
and he would like to know if you or anyone you know involved in editing
Wikipedia and currently in Cape Town during April would be willing to chat
with him? He is interested in learning more about how South African
editors view, use, and edit Wikipedia. He will be in Cape Town from the
7th to the 14th of April and is looking forward to learning more about the
people that edit Wikipedia in the Cape Town area and share
that knowledge with everyone else.
Here is an example of an interview with an editor (in her house) which he
did and was sent out in an email to 150,000 US-only donors for the
valentines day holiday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLHZUIVdPU0
He is also on the look out for a South Africa/Africa specific article that
is an example of collaberation creating excellence. For example (in
Victor's words) "talking about a particular Wikipedia page that through
arguing and debate and fact-checking has become a quality article. This is
something that I would be particularly interested in doing." So if you
have any ideas dont hesitate to drop Victor an email.
If you are interested in being interviewed either feel free to drop me a
line or contact him directly (chop out the unnecessary middle man, namely
myself) at vgrigas(a)wikimedia.org.
Thanks,
Douglas.
P.S. I am looking forward to seeing many of the Cape Town based editors at
the upcoming Special General Meeting
<http://wikimedia.org.za/wiki/23-02-13-GeneralMeeting-Agenda> this
Saturday.

[Please note that I send this purely as a volunteer, and in no
connexion to the Wikimedia Foundation.]
Dear all,
I write to announce the Jury to select which bid will be chosen to
host Wikimania in 2014.
The twelve members will be:
* Deror Avi - [[User:Deror avi]] from Israel (Wikimania 2011 General
Manager)
* Philippe Beaudette - [[User:Philippe (WMF)]] from the US (Wikimedia
Foundation Director, Community Advocacy)
* Jeromy-Yu Chan - [[User:Yuyu]] from HK (Wikimania 2013
Co-ordinator-in-Chief)
* Shujen Chang - [[User:Shujenchang]] from HK
* Florence Devouard - [[User:Anthere]] from France
* Orsolya Gyenes - [[User:OrsolyaVirág]] from Hungary (Wikimania 2012
Deputy Program Chair)
* James Hare - [[User:Harej]] from the US (Wikimania 2012 Co-chair)
* Achal Prabhala - [[User:Aprabhala]] from India - Wikimedia Advisory
Board member
* Konarak Ratnakar - [[User:Kondicherry]] from India
* Noopur Raval - [[User:Noopur28]] from India
* Manuel Schneider - [[User:80686]] from Austria (Wikimedia
Österreich; perpetual Wikimania organiser)
* [[User:Whiteghost.ink]] from Australia
Jan-Bart de Vreede and Sam Klein (of the Wikimedia Foundation Board)
will also be part of the Jury, as normal.
I and Phoebe Ayers - [[User:Phoebe]] - will be serving as moderators,
neutral aides for the Jury who do not vote.
To re-iterate what we've said before, it would be lovely if this was
the last year we used this process, and that for 2015 onwards we could
create a new, community-led and more open and transparent process.
Some earlier discussions took place at [[m:Talk:Wikimania Advisory
Group]]. Please feel free to give your thoughts there.
As a reminder, bids have two weeks (until 23:59 UTC on 3 March 2013)
until bidding creation closes. All cities which intend to run for the
bidding process should have created a page on meta and entered the
official list by this point.
Thank you, and good luck to all Bids.
Yours,

Hear ye, hear ye
It is agreat pleasure to announce the formal endorsement of JoburgpediA
concept and the pilot project under this name, by the City of Johannesburg.
This means that we now have the permission to install QRcoded ceramic
plaques next to the prestigious City of Johannesburg Heritage plaques!
JoburgpediA follows on the foot steps of MonmouthpediA that was a great
success in Wales, and will be the first such project in Africa. Where
better to start it than in our very own Joburg?
The pilot project will be implemented between February and June 2013 and
will depend on a lot of volunteer wikimedians to assist in:
1- Translating submitted meta data into as many local languages as
possible. As well as French, German and Portuguese.
2- Organising and conducting 2 editathons.
3- Setting up and batch uploads of meta data that will be donated into
Wikipedia.
4- Creating templates
If you feel this is something you would like to spend the next 4 months
doing then please contact the project leads as follows:

Wikimedia Foundation named Knight News Challenge winner

Wikimedia Foundation named winner of Knight News Challenge
$600,000 in Knight Foundation funding supports innovation across
Wikimedia mobile initiatives
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - January 17, 2013 - The Wikimedia Foundation was
named a winner in the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Knight
News Challenge for its efforts to expand and improve Wikimedia's
mobile projects. The Wikimedia Foundation is enhancing the Wikipedia
mobile experience and making it easier to access Wikipedia,
particularly for readers in developing countries.
As mobile technology is increasingly the primary opportunity for
billions of people around the world to access the Internet, the
Wikimedia Foundation is working to remove the two biggest hurdles to
access free knowledge: cost and accessibility. The News Challenge
grant will be utilized in four areas:
*Improving the way that users experience our mobile platform on feature phones;
*Expanding Wikipedia Zero, which gives mobile users free access to
Wikipedia on their phones;
*Developing features to improve the mobile experience regardless of
how feature-rich the device is, including new ways to access Wikipedia
via texting;
*Increasing the number of languages that can access Wikipedia on mobile.
The Wikimedia Foundation is one of eight mobile projects to receive a
total of $2.4 million today through the Knight News Challenge, which
accelerates projects with funding and advice from Knight's network of
media innovators. A full list is at knightfoundation.org.
"Knight Foundation's funding will support us making the mobile version
of Wikipedia easier to use, as well as enabling us to expand Wikipedia
Zero, our project with mobile operators that lets their customers
access Wikipedia for free," said Sue Gardner, Executive Director of
the Wikimedia Foundation. "I'm very happy Knight has chosen to support
us; it's an important affirmation of our mobile work."
Knight Foundation, the nation’s leading funder of journalism and media
innovation, is committed to promoting democracy by supporting informed
and engaged communities. Founded by newsmen John S. and James L.
Knight, the foundation launched the Knight News Challenge in 2007 to
find the next generation of innovations that help communities get the
information they need.
"Wikipedia has helped define the way that people collaboratively
create content. Making the site available to more people across the
world will help foster and spread that culture," said John Bracken,
director for journalism and media innovation at Knight Foundation.
The $600,000 News Challenge grant is for two years and follows a
general support grant of $250,000 that Knight Foundation awarded to
the Wikimedia Foundation in December 2012.
The Wikimedia Foundation and the other winners of the challenge will
present their projects via live Web stream at 12:30 p.m. ET/ 10:30
a.m. MT Friday, January 18 at knightfoundation.org/live, from a
gathering on the future of mobile at Arizona State University. (Follow
#newschallenge on Twitter.)
