Subject: [Wikimedia-l] OpenSSL vulnerability
To: "mediawiki-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org"
<mediawiki-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, "wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org"
<wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
I'm cross-posting this email from Wikitech-l from Greg Grossmeier. I
think wide distribution is appropriate especially for contributors who
may use vulnerable off-wiki communication tools with their Wikimedia
password or for Wikimedia activity.
--
Yesterday a widespread issue in OpenSSL was disclosed that would allow
attackers to gain access to privileged information on any site running a
vulnerable version of that software. Unfortunately, all Wikimedia
Foundation hosted wikis are potentially affected.
We have no evidence of any actual compromise to our systems or our users
information, but as a precautionary measure we are resetting all user
session tokens. In other words, we will be forcing all logged in users
to re-login (ie: we are logging everyone out).
All logged in users send a secret session token with each request to the
site and if a nefarious person were able to intercept that token they
could impersonate other users. Resetting the tokens for all users will
have the benefit of making all users reconnect to our servers using the
updated and fixed version of the OpenSSL software, thus removing this
potential attack.
As an extra precaution, we recommend all users change their passwords as
well.
Again, there has been no evidence that Wikimedia Foundation users were
targeted by this attack, but we want all of our users to be as safe as
possible.
Thank you for your understanding and patience,
Greg Grossmeier

A warm welcome to all our fellow Wikipedians,
It's been 3 months since our last communication so we just want to touch
base with you, and tell you what we have been up to.
*What does 2014 have in store?*
The first months of 2014 have been packed with mostly project focussed
activities. As part of our ongoing commitment to increase awareness of the
South African Chapter and Wikipedia as a whole, we have been busy putting
together many projects that will do just that.
Here is a quick glance of these upcoming projects:
*Joburgpedia 2014*
The first phase of Joburgpedia was received very well, and we are pleased
to announce that we have received funding to implement the second phase of
the project, which will kick off in April.
This year will see the appointment of the first South African Wikipedians
in Residence at Johannesburg Heritage Foundation and Museum Africa!
*Collaboration with Constitutional Court*
WMZA is very excited about a collaboration with the Constitutional Court.
Training sessions will take place with various participants which will see
contributions to Wikipedia in terms of documentation and information
relevant to the Concourt.
*Wiki Meetups*
Wiki Meetups are an opportunity for Wikipedians and anyone else interested
in getting more involved in Wikipedia and other Wikis, as well as open
collaboration projects, to meet and talk about issues of shared interest.
We will keep you posted of upcoming events. The 5th Cape Town Wiki Meetup
will take place on Sunday, 4 May at 11:00 at Truth
Coffee<http://www.truthcoffee.com/>,
36 Buitenkant Street, Cape Town. More information about the meet up can be
found here<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Cape_Town#5th_Cape_Town_Meet…>.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
*Wikimania 2015*
We are very excited about our bid for Wikimania
2015<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2015_bids/Cape_Town>.
We expect the bid committee to make its final decision in April!
*Wiki Indaba*
The first ever gathering of African Wikipedians for
Africa<http://wikiindaba.net/index.php?title=Main_Page>will be held in
Johannesburg in June. Scholarship
applications <http://wikiindaba.net/index.php?title=Main_Page/Attendance>can
be made online. This conference is the first step towards the
establishment of African co-operative structures and organs made up of
Wikimedia Chapters, Wikimedians and mission aligned thematic
organisations.
*Wiki Loves Monuments & Others*
September is Heritage month and the kick-off of Wiki Loves Monuments
2014. We look forward to increased participation and number of submissions
this year.
WMZA is also investigating the feasibility of a Wiki Loves Wildlife
competition and, in collaboration with other Chapters, a Wiki Loves Earth
competition.
We are also proud to announce our new partner, Western Cape Heritage, who
have come on board to promote participation from the Western Cape. We look
forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with this new
partner.
*Chapters Conference - Germany, April 2014*
Douglas Scott, Theresa Hume and David Richfield will be representing WMZA
at the Chapters Conference in Germany during the first weekend of April.
*GLAM*
As a pilot project for the GLAM initiative, we have approached the
National Archives in Pretoria to discuss a possible collaboration which
will see the digitisation of their libraries onto Wikipedia.
*WikiXhosa*
Unfortunately despite numerous attempts, Wikimedia ZA has not had much
success with activating Xhosa language Wikipedia. As such, activation
activities have - for the foreseeable future - been put on hold to free up
more time and resources to focus on other projects. If you, or anyone you
know is interested in promoting Wikipedia Xhosa language, or any other
African language Wikipedia, then please let us know.
*WikiZero*
Have you heard about the Sinenjongo High School success story? They
launched a campaign to get cell phone providers to provide South Africa
with free access to Wikipedia <http://wikimedia.org.za/wiki/Main_Page> for
research purposes. MTN has heard their call and started providing free
access to all its subscribers. We are very excited about what this means
for the learners of Sinenjongo and will be meeting them at the end of April
to discuss the way forward.
So that's it from us for now. Remember to like our Facebook pages so that
you can get up to date information!
Happy Editing!
*The Wikimedia ZA Team*
*Dumisani Ndubane, Maarten Deneckere, David Richfield, Douglas Scott, Bobby
Shabangu, Isla Haddow-Flood and Theresa Hume*
Hello everyone,

Wikipedia, Wikinews, Wikivoyage, ectra.) and people interested in open
software and information are invited to join.
It is a small, informal, casual affair so feel free to arrive any time
between 11am and 2pm. There will be free access to internet and a free cup
of coffee or two.
*Details:*
*Date*: Sunday, 2nd February 2014
*Time*: 11am to 2pm
*Location*: *Truth Coffee <http://www.truthcoffee.com/>*, 36 Buitenkant St,
Cape Town 8000, South Africa.
Wikimedia ZA has access to the offices above the cafe' so we will move the
event there after 2pm if needs be.
For more information please contact Douglas at douglas.i.scott(a)gmail.com or
079 515 8727.
Best regards,
Wikimedia ZA.
Ekushe Toye!
I'm copying our mailing list so that other South African Wikimedians
can contribute to the discussion.
You have not necessarily been eliminated: Phase 1 is still under way,
but what I can say unofficially is that there is an enormous number of
excellent applications by people who are already heavily engaged in
the movement.
Even if you are not selected for one of the limited number of
scholarships, I, as a member of Wikimedia South Africa, would like to
help you engage further with the project, especially in regards to
building a strong African Wikimedia presence. Hopefully next year
we'll be able to make an extremely strong showing!
What would be really great would be if you could go to our Facebook
page and our mailing list and introduce yourself: I would love us to
build a more pan-African movement and see how we can mobilise editors
across the continent. What that means is that we can help you to edit
Wikipedia in such a way as to have a real impact. One of the easiest
places to make an impact would be in the Yoruba wikipedia: Take a
look at this page for example:
https://yo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yor%C3%B9b%C3%A1 I'm sure you'd be able
to translate it properly. Maybe you can find pages that interest you
in http://yo.wikipedia.org and translate them from English? After
doing one page per day for a year on the Yoruba Wikipedia, you'll be
100% guaranteed to get a scholarship next year, especially if you
engage with other editors in Nigeria. Make sure you're logged in when
you edit: that way it's easier to track your progress, and for other
editors to contact you if they want to collaborate.
If you have any problems with editing Wikipedia, please contact me at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Slashme - I'll definitely get
back to you with help and advice.
Good luck and happy editing!

Dear Wiki Loves Monuments volunteers,
We are happy to announce the launch of Wiki Loves Sea Turtle Monuments!
A brand new global project surrounding the majestic sea turtles has been launched on Wikimedia Commons! MEDASSET (The Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles) has set up the foundation for what we aim to be an encyclopedic reference of sea turtle related monuments from around the world.
Sea turtles are found in all corners of the Earth, having roamed the world's oceans for 100 million years. Their significance as a symbol has been commemorated by various cultures all throughout history and it will be essential to our cause to document their emblematic status through photographs; it will help us raise awareness about the dangers they face because of human activity.
We were inspired by "Wiki loves monuments" and are appealing to you, the volunteers from around the world that made Wiki Loves Monuments the most successful photography competition in the world! Please help our project succeed and do your part in helping our natural heritage survive!
What can you do?
MEDASSET is a non profit environmental organisation working since 1988 to protect sea turtles in the Mediterranean. This is our first project which reaches out to Wikimedians and we need your help.
Perhaps through Wiki Loves Monuments images of sea turtle monuments have already been uploaded onto Wikimedia commons. Can you help us locate them? Just add the Category (Sea Turtle Monuments) to images depicting sea turtles!
Please take a moment and visit seaturtlemonuments.medasset.org and also http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Sea_Turtle_Monuments to read more about Wiki Loves Sea Turtle Monuments and look at the images collected so far.
Our project aims at establishing a public domain encyclopedic reference for sea turtle related outdoor monuments which will contribute to open and free knowledge. Please help us make this possible!
If you have other recommendations or ideas for us, we are looking forward to receiving your feedback. Your experience is valuable to us!
With very best wishes for a Happy New Year,

Hi Bobby
The people generally prefer to use their individual group names (e.g. !Kung, Khwe, Gwi - spelling debatable), which would be used in titles for separate Wikipedia articles on each group.
They are divided on a collective term (which is essentially a choice between San, Bushmen and Basarwa), so it would be the luck of the draw which answer you get from one person. Since 1993 their representatives have chosen San as the more neutral term (and confirmed it in 1996 and 1997 with no change since then).

Helen

Hi Helen and Nkansah,
I think the easiest thing is to ask one of these people because according to my understanding they are divided into many groups, you might find out that they don't call themselves "San people or Bushmen" , they might be the khoi san, the Nama, they might be the Nkqa/qa or something very different from what we English speakers know them to be, otherwise for the artilcle i feel San people has more dignity to refer to a people. i'll check out the article later on !

Hi Rexford
Thanks for your interest.
I personally don't think "Bushmen" is a completely inappropriate term (although some people have strong feelings either way). The question here is really what the primary term or default term is, in terms of what reliable English language sources use and what the people themselves prefer.
I agree that the content of the article (and many others) needs improving. I have focussed only on the nomenclature section so far. It is a lot of work overhauling an article completely and I have come to terms with the fact that I can only do so much on my own.

Helen

Hi Helen,
I just read through the discussion and its interesting for me so far. Many support the idea of changing to San people.
Well, I think it doesn't _really_ matter whether its 'San people' or 'bushmen'. Though the name 'bushman' might sound completely inappropriate ( or even perhaps insulting), I think content on the page is what really needs to be improved.
Personally, I've never known them to be San people (until today) and I'm sure many people ( perhaps over 70% of the world ) know such people as bushmen.
Currently, the article 'San people' redirects to 'Bushmen' which I see it to be same. (Changing the title will just make the redirection inverse)
If the word 'bushmen' its inappropriate, then I guess it shouldn't be mentioned even in the article, even if the title is changed to 'San people'

Hi, this is my first mailing to this list so I hope it's appropriate.
I have proposed a move from the "Bushmen" Wikipedia article title to "San people". If you have not already done so, please participate in the move discussion so we can reach a consensus.
The last discussion took place almost two years ago with little participation despite numerous complaints posted on the article talk page. I spent some time researching the facts and improving the nomenclature section of the article so that people could make a more informed decision.
