Hi all,
As everyone is aware, Results of general elections are going to be announced on 16th of this month. In this regard, we are planning for a Wikidata labelathon for Indian parliamentarians who are declared win - constituency wise in these elections. This will involve creating label for each parliamentarian and a description that says which constituency, state and party that politician is from. This will ensure that each language has at least a single line about each of the elected public representatives. Those who are interested, please fill in your names in the event page here : https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Access_To_Knowledge/Events/Indian_Parl... This project would run for 2 month period, and ensure that this labeling happens in all Indian languages. For any other help, please feel free to contact.
Hi rahim, a few pointers as a Wikidata editor.
Please wait till the results are out completely. Wait for a while to ensure that atleast one article, in atleast one language is created before creating a data item.
Why is this coming under the A2K?
Shouldn't it be a community event?

Hoi, There is no need to have articles first..
We have added quite a number of members of the National Assemblee of South Africa that do not have any mention in any wikipedia but a red link. With items in Wikidata and associated labels all these people can be found in any Wiki that has WD-search enabled. Like in India, South Africa has many official languages and languages that are both spoken and written. Thanks, GerardM

Hoi, EMPTY data items get deleted. When they have statements that carry weight .. ie they fulfil the notability requirements of Wikidata, they are welcomed. I am sure that new members of the Lok Sabha will be welcomed. When it still proves to be an issue, I am happy to champion them. Thanks, GerardM

Please use Wiki to do discussions. I would only answer there! This habit of doing discussions over Mailing lists is a bad practice. Do, the discussion over the talk page.

Rahim,
As a CIS employee, you should learn professional etiquette and be consistent.
You advise the community to discuss this project only in META and yet you are trying to reach community members by phone.
After I placed my questions in META, you gave me a telephone call to discuss the questions I asked in META. That was a heated call almost shouting at me without allowing me to explain anything.
Then you come in Facebook chat and challenged me to revert an edit in Tamil Wikipedia if I don't see value in the label-o-thon project.
In my 9 years of serving the movement, no community member / staff has ever spoken like this.
Who are you to dictate what I should do?
Ravi
Hi Ravi,
I ask the same, Who are you to dictate what I should do? And what my community should do?
I didnt shout at you, you are shouting at me everytime you remind me that whatever I do is being done as CIS employee, though this whole conversation goes with my personal ID and not CIS's.

If you are doing this project as a volunteer, why are you documenting it as a CIS proejct?

I have never dictated on what Telugu or any other community should do. But, I do share my feedback and comments as a neighbourhood community member. Please, do not forget I was part of the Hyderabadi Wikipedia community during 2011 - 2012 and actively participated / initiated some community meetings.

Rahim,
Let me decalre this.
I am BOYCOTTING to sign up for this labelothon event for the following reasons.
* Signing up for this event will only help CIS-A2K undue credit for existing organic communty's work. There has been past evidences for these as seen
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:APG/Proposals/2013-2014_round2/T...
and
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:APG/Proposals/2013-2014_round2/T...
* Soon after I register a difference of opinion in META, I receive a phone call shouting at me and a Facebook chat challenging me to an edit from a CIS employee. This is no way to treat the community members and I strongly PROTEST.
* I would rather spend my energy in contributing to full length articles like

Sibi,
I am boycotting this only in it's current form as a CIS project which exploits volunteer work.
If there is a similar community initiative, I will definitely provide my token support.
Irrespective of this being CIS led or community led, I have a difference of opinion on the relative usefulness of this project.
Please note that Gerard has conceded that empty data items do get deleted in WikiData and you need to champion to keep this work in WikiData.
The right approach would be to work on creating articles related to this (even if they are stubs adhering to local community standards) and then proceed to WikiData.
From a local perspective, the language communities might prefer spending
energy on their regional MPs than working on all MPs nationwide.
Please note that there is an ongoing discussion in Tamil community regarding spending limited volunteer resources on too many Wiki projects. There are people who oppose even working in less visibility projects like Wikiquote and Wikinews without improving Wikipedia first.
All these labels will only appear if someone searches regarding this in a Wikipedia search box and won't add any content to native language Wikipedias by itself. I don't see WikiData appearing prominently in search results either.
I am not against growing WikiData but there are other primary tasks we need to do first using WikiData. For example, do we have a WikiData page for all our articles? If not, that would be the first task we should take.
However, these are my personal views and volunteers can choose to spend their energy wisely :)

hi Rahim,
Your first email to this thread did come from your personal email id. However, I do think that you should have stated on the email that you are taking this initiative as a community member and not as an employee of CIS. This is a practice that is common and standard practise among WMF staff who are also community members and it is worth doing so here as well as long as we have paid staff. The default assumption for any of your emails to this list currently will be that this effort is undertaken by you as an employee of CIS-A2K. If you are taking this effort as a community member, you need to state this upfront.
Your replies to community member (here - http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2014-May/011348.html) and elected WMIN EC (here - http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2014-May/011341.htmlan... here - http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2014-May/011338.html) leaves a lot to be desired. There is a higher expectation from you since you are doing this work full time. Community members and WMIN EC are doing this on the side along with other activities an work and are participating because they are interested in the movement. It is not easy to balance these easily. This should have your consideration as a full-time paid employee.
I have asked this question on Meta and you are free to answer there but I'm writing the question here for the sake of completeness of this email thread. I have read all the links on the page and have contributed to WikiData myself. I am no expert and I fail to understand what this Label-a-thon seeks to achieve. To give you an example so that you can answer better, an edit-a-thon seeks to improve an article on Wikipedia accessed by the general public. In a similar vein, what does this Label-a-thon seek to achieve? Can you please explain the same in simple words?
Thank you,
warm regards, Pradeep Mohandas

Hi all,
As everyone is aware, Results of general elections are going to be announced on 16th of this month. In this regard, we are planning for a Wikidata labelathon for Indian parliamentarians who are declared win - constituency wise in these elections.
Small Doubt : Location is given as //LocationAt your homes, over a cup of coffee!//
And you call it as A2K's event . Don't you think its taking undue credit for the work which community is doing ?
This will involve creating label for each parliamentarian and a description that says which constituency, state and party that politician is from. This will ensure that each language has at least a single line about each of the elected public representatives. Those who are interested, please fill in your names in the event page here : https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Access_To_Knowledge/Events/Indian_Parl... This project would run for 2 month period, and ensure that this labeling happens in all Indian languages.
For any other help, please feel free to contact.
I need a help . How is the metrics being set , for A2K driven wikidata update and community driven wikidata updates ?

Sorry I never knew using mailing list was a "bad practise" . Could you please let me know why its so ? Any documented evidence or rule that I must not use mailing list for a discussion which has started in mailing list . Please let me know .
It may be your own take that you will answer "only there" , then why announce it in mailing list ?
Do, the discussion over the talk page.
Am I supposed to take this as a "high handed order" from paid professional to a community member ?
Nonetheless . The questions have been asked by Srikanth in talk page . Waiting for the reply atleast there :)
