Does
$parser->disableCache();
apply to tags in the sitenotice?
Thanks!

Hi all,
Currently I have five wikis with the largest one being about 35k articles
(109k pages) and pretty heavily trafficked. My basic server architecture is
four web servers behind a load balancer and with a single NFS server that
shares out a directory that contains the upload directory content for each
of the five wikis, e.g. /wiki/wiki1, /wiki/wiki2, etc. (There are also
MySQL and Memcached servers but they are not relevant to this discussion.)
Each web server mounts /wiki in one location, say /var/www/images and each
of the five MediaWiki instances on the server has its images subdirectory
as a symlink to its corresponding subdirectory under the mount, e.g.
/var/www/images/wiki2.
Obviously the NFS server is a single point of failure but I've yet to come
up with a good alternative shared-filesystem architecture that doesn't
require an expensive license like SNFS.
Finally, I'm considering moving the whole shebang to AWS but using S3
directly on the web servers doesn't seem viable in this architecture.
So I'm wondering how others are approaching the design of load balancing
(multiple instances of) MediaWiki across multiple web servers while
maintaining a single source for each wikis upload directory content. I'm
willing to COMPLETELY reevaluate my wiki server architecture as long as
it's fast and highly available, so all suggestions are welcome!

I am surprised to see that a spammer is spoofing his IP address. I got some spam from 200.90.74.226 - "226" is out of range for IPs and so isn't even a valid IP address. I confirmed that the number is not a wiki username and the apache log shows the same IP. It appears maybe the spammer's script has a bug and not range-checking the generated numbers which made it obvious that the IP is spoofed; otherwise I would have never noticed.
I thought IP spoofing was a fairly sophisticated tactic and didn't expect to see a common wiki spammer using it, or am I wrong? I'm also surprised apache even allowed the connection, much less the Amazon AWS firewall. Am I missing something?

Dear Wikipedians,
We'd like to announce a major update of the Math (rendering) extension.
For registered Wikipedia users, we have introduced a new math rendering
mode using MathML, a markup language for mathematical formulae. Since MathML
is not supported in all browsers [1], we have also added a fall-back mode
using scalable vector graphics (SVG).
Both modes offer crisp rendering at any resolution, which is a major
advantage over the current image-based default. We'll also be able to make
our math more accessible by improving screenreader and magnification support.
We encourage you to enable the MathML mode in your Appearance preferences.
As an example, the URL for this section on the English Wikipedia is:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering
For editors, there are also two new optional features:
1) You can set the "id" attribute to create math tags that can be
referenced. For example, the following math tag
<math id="MassEnergyEquivalence">
E=mc^2
</math>
can be referenced by the wikitext
[[#MassEnergyEquivalence|mass energy equivalence]]
This is true regardless of the rendering mode used.
2) In addition, there is the attribute "display" with the possible values
"block" or "inline". This attribute can be used to control the layout of the
math tag with regard to centering and size of the operators. See
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Math/Displaystyle
for a full description, of this feature.
Your feedback is very welcome. Please report bugs in Bugzilla against the
Math extension, or post on the talk page here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension_talk:Math
All this is brought to you by Moritz Schubotz and Frédéric Wang (both
volunteers) in collaboration with Gabriel Wicke, C. Scott Ananian,
Alexandros Kosiaris and Roan Kattouw from the Wikimedia Foundation. We also
owe a big thanks to Peter Krautzberger and Davide P. Cervone of MathJax for
the server-side math rendering backend.
Best,
Gabriel Wicke (GWicke) and Moritz Schubotz (Physikerwelt)
[1]: Currently MathML is supported by Firefox & other Gecko-based browsers,
and accessibility tools like Apple's VoiceOver. There is also partial
support in WebKit.
do you have any current test setups running with a mysql or any mysql
derivative? reason im asking is you can easily do then an sql dump of the
database and you have all your queries etc in the dump file. Or even better
use mysql workbench to reverse engineer the db and get it in chart form.

Have you tried using the install.php maintenance script?
