Hello, I am new to this list and actually just testing to see whether
MediaWiki is right for my newsroom.
I have what seems to be a common installation/configuration problem, but I
can't seem to find a solution via the typical Googl-ing and forum posts (and
the archived threads from this list) ...
We are running a Windows XP IIS 5.1 server ... I have PHP (I am using
version 5.2) configured to run on that server as CGI scripts (IIS
configurations point to the php-cgi.exe file in my PHP directory) ... and I
am running MySQL 5.1.
A typical PHP test page (where you just have the line "phpinfo();" in there
and you get the big screen with all the PHP info) works fine ... BUT it
doesn't seem to be able to talk to MySQL.
At the bottom of the phpinfo page, I see this:
-----
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:/Program
Files/PHP/ext/php_mysql.dll' - Invalid access to memory location. in Unknown
on line 0 PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library
'C:/Program Files/PHP/ext/php_mysqli.dll' - Invalid access to memory
location. in Unknown on line 0
-----
And the config page of my Wiki says this, along with the above:
----
Please include all of the lines below when reporting installation problems.
PHP 5.2.0 installed Could not find a suitable database driver!
For MySQL, compile PHP using --with-mysql, or install the mysql.so module
For PostgreSQL, compile PHP using --with-pgsql, or install the pgsql.so
module
----
Now, some disclaimers:
- php.ini has been configured so it points to the right extensions folder. I
use right slashes. extension=php_mysql.dll and extension=php_mysqli.dll are
both uncommented.
- I've tried copying libmySQL.dll into my PHP directory, my PHP extensions
directory and my Windows directory
- Other extensions, like php_socket.dll, seem to work and reside in the
extensions file.
- both PHP and MySQL are in the PATH of my Windows Environmental Variable
settings.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hello All,
I am trying to use the SmoothGallery extension with templates and I am
having some problems with it.
I have a template Gallery like
<sgallery someparams>
{{{1}}}
</sgallery>
I want to include the template something like this in other pages
{{ Gallery | {{:images}} }}
where images is a wiki page with just have a list of images like
,Image1.jpg,Image2.jpg
I even tried including the list directly as an argument, which doesnt work
either.
If I include the list in the template, then things work fine.
Is this not the right way to do it ? Does the extensions get parsed before
the embedded pages or something.
I would appreciate any kind of help.
Thanks

Hello everyone!
I'm uploading some pdf files that have some special characters in their
names to my mediawiki site, but when I try to open them, I get to a Not
Found page. I have noticed that when I upload them, their names change in
the server to other characters where the special chars are and that's why
mediawiki can't find them. Is their a way or an extension to avoid this?
Thank you!

Hi there,
the last two month I tried to understand the basics of mediawiki and learned
a lot about Apache Servers, PHP installations and mediawiki extensions.
For someone coming from Windows with its nice features like the Visual Basic
environment in the Office products I am now approaching the following
question:
As far as I understood mediawiki is written in PHP but I have no clue with
which environment (IDE) it has been developed or which one can be used in
order to do so.
Is there an easy way to use something like Eclipse to load mediawiki as a
project and debug the code like it can be done e.g. in Visual Studio.
It would be nice if somebody could give me a hint where to have a look at
the basics on how to develop applications based on PHP (especially for the
mediawiki project)

Subject: [Foundation-l] EBNF of Wikitext
To: foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
I'm working on writing out an EBNF description of Wikitext at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wikiWikitext_Metasyntax , which I hear is much
needed, but have encountered a snag. I don't think EBNF has the power to
describe Wikitext. If anyone here can work out how EBNF can describe
Wikitext's system for bullet points, I'd like to see it. The problem is that
bullet points can build on each other, except each new level has to retain
the markup from the old level, plus a new symbol. e.g. **#* then **#* * then
**#** * then **#*** # etc.
On the topic of "things that need to be done" if writing an EBNF of Wikitext
isn't going to be beneficial for MediaWiki's longstanding success, I'll not
bother, but is there anything that needs to be done like this to create a
standard?
Please forward to any other mailing lists in which this might be
appropriate. Thanks!

Hello everyone,
Since many of you have successfully introduced wikis in the workplace, I
wonder whether you'd prepared a "sales pitch" to convince the higher-ups
of your company.
I'm thinking of composing such a presentation myself, including a
definition of the basic principle, a quick outline of the advantages and
possible fields of applications etc.
Since I'm not very good at these kinda things, it'd be nice to have
something to check my draft against.
(Of course I can make it available when I'm done - although it will be
in German until I get around translating it.)
Also, having such a concise (and semi-standardized) introduction to the
"The Wiki Way" would certainly help others pushing for adoption in their
organization...
Thanks,
Frederik
When trying to edit wiki.lspace.org (I'm an end user, I don't run it),
I ran into a "406 Not Acceptable" error when editing a page.
In the Sandbox, I narrowed it down: the phrase "Python (who)" (or even
"Python and" or "Python x") is sufficient, by itself, to cause the
error.
Why, and what's the workaround? I tried "!Python (who)", but had the
same problem.
I'm guessing Python is being interpreted as the programming language,
and "Python x" is trying to run the Python command x or something? Is
there a way to turn off this "feature"? If not, how can I escape the
word "Python" so that I can use it on the wiki page?
Is this issue specific to wiki.lspace.org? Specific to Bad Behavior,
which wiki.lspace.org uses?

We're just a Bunch Of Regular Guys, a collective group that's trying
to understand and assimilate technology. We feel that resistance to
new ideas and technology is unwise and ultimately futile.
Hey guys,
While I don't think this is possible (yet?), I still think it's worth discussing:
It'd be great if you could define variables on a page that could be included in the text and which would then be expanded when displaying the output.
Here's an example of what I mean (syntax arbitrary):
<!-- variable definitions -->
@status_done = <span style="color: green;">canceled</span>
@status_inProgress = <span style="color: blue;">canceled</span>
@status_canceled = <span style="color: red;">canceled</span>
@document_manualEN = ''User Manual and Usage Notes''
@document_manualDE = ''Benutzerhandbuch und Anwendungshinweise''
<!-- text body -->
This is an overview of current tasks:
* Install MediaWiki %status_done%
* Create Help pages %status_inProgress%
* Go on vacation %status_canceled%
* Create manuals:
** %document_manualEN%
** %document_manualDE%
** ensure consistency between %document_manualEN% and %document_manualDE%
(sorry for the lack of creativity in this example, but it should suffice to get my point across)
I believe this could enhance consistency within structured pages, and would probably be easy to implement - and learn - as well (too bad I'm not very experienced with PHP).
While I guess the same could be achieved with regular templates, it can be quite bothersome having to create a new template page for each tiny element - not to mention the issue of coming up with unique names for a large number of templates that are each only used on one particular page...
Any thoughts?

Hello all,
As the web master of my wiki many people have been contacting me with questions about how our wiki is indexed by Google (and other search engines). However, I have not really been able to supply good answers to any of them so I am asking here... obviously. ;)
How exactly is MediaWiki indexed by Google in its out-of-box state (no extensions, etc.)? Does it create meta-tags or anything for each page?
Thanks a million!
