Well, the first assumption was clearly stated in the part you cut out!
But the rest of your reasons are well taken.

Hi,
I am running MW 1.5.3 on Fedora 4.
I try to use two templates. In the first templates, I
opened a block with
<div style="display:block; border:1px solid
{{{border}}}; vertical-align:top;
background-color:{{{background}}};
color:{{{foreground}}}; margin-bottom:10px; padding:
1em; margin-top: 0em; padding-top:.3em; ">
But I donot close this block in the first template.
Then in the second template I tried to close the block
opened in the first template with </div>
But the MW 1.5.3 I am using would not allow me to
close the block. The block got closed prematurely in
the first template.
However the wikipedia.org can do the feature described
above.
Any suggestion on the fix.
Thanks
jc

Here's a script we use to copy preferences from one user to all users for MW
1.4.x. YMMV.
mysql_connect($wgDBserver,$wgDBuser,$wgDBpassword);
@mysql_select_db($wgDBname);
$query="SELECT * FROM " . $wgDBprefix . "user WHERE LOWER(user_name) =
'" . strtolower($name) . "'";
$result = mysql_query($query);
$row = mysql_fetch_array($result, MYSQL_ASSOC);
mysql_close();
mysql_connect($wgDBserver,$wgDBuser,$wgDBpassword);
@mysql_select_db($wgDBname);
$query="UPDATE " . $wgDBprefix . "user SET user_options = '" .
$row[user_options] . "'";
$result = mysql_query($query);
mysql_close();

Not a quick one, that I know of. A custom PHP script might do it.

I want to use an extension on my wiki, the automatic wikification
extension, of which a version can be downloaded at
http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2336. This extension
automatically adds wikilinks to words in an article that need them.
However, the extension normally runs on page save. Since I don't want
to go through all pages and save them only to run the extension, I
wanted something to go through all the pages and run the extension.
Unfortunately, I realized that my knowledge of php, mysql and the
mediawiki code is inadequate to create something like that. So I am
begging someone, anyone, to help me with this. I've used whole days
and only learned that the method I wanted to use was wrong.
If you can help me with this, please email me at
jediarchives11(a)gmail.com. Thanks.
No, he doesn't. I think it I made a mistake in my eMail. Sorry, but my english is a bit improofable...
I understood Tibor well and his adwise works well as well :-)
The thing abaut the DefaultSettings was somthing completly different.
Thince I am working with wikis, which is only a short time, I heard some people saying, that modifiing the DefaultSettings isn't a good idea, but nobody could tell me why, so I asked.
Thats all.
And by the way, whats an OP?
Have a nice day

I don't see where Tibor was advocating changing DefaultSettings.php,
he was talking about editing MediaWiki:Sidebar page which is a new
feature of 1.5
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Navigation_bar
I was a little unsure why your link to this page was to a specific
pre-1.5 edition when the OP clearly said that he was using 1.5.3

Hi All--
I'm trying to hack whatever functions produce the "&action=edit"
style defaults for broken links, but despite trawling Linker.php
and Skin.php (and a couple of less-likely candidates), googling
randomly and looking through the list archives here, I can't work
out what to change.
Can someone please point me in the right direction, or suggest
a better way to go about this? (My intention is to allow a
setting in LocalSettings.php to specify where broken links
point--which could be onsite or offsite, eg. to the wikipedia
page of the same name)? Thanks.

I'll second that! I've installed it and added a test/demo page; now I
just have to think of some situations to use it for... :-)

Since this is used for copying *one* user's preferences to all the
other users, and assuming you'd be pretty careful about selecting
that one to copy, and also assuming that this script would only be
run by trusted individuals in a trusted environment, what's the problem?
I'm not being facetious; I just want to know if I missed something
important.
(BTW: I just ported my static HTML "Van" pages, below, to MW 1.5.3.)

My link *should* have been to the finished version of it which applied
to 1.5.x - I cleaned it up myself a while back, and a few others have
added to it/corrected typos etc. Basically, I linked to that clean
version, minus the template clutter; apologies if I clicked on the
wrong revision or absentmindedly copied the wrong URL or whatever.
I think the confusion over DefaultSettings.php comes from him not
removing this thread's subject before responding to some other query.

I made two new MediaWiki extensions.
1) Poem Extension. A very simple extension, which only adds a line break at
the end of each line between <poem></poem> tags, which can be truly useful
for, err, poems. Its page is at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Poem_Extension
2) ShowHide Extension. A bit more complex extension, which enables you to make
a portion of wiki page which could be shown or hidden, as ToC could be now.
Its page is at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ShowHide_Extension
Please tell me what do you think of them :)
