Dear all,
I had already "met" Shupai in the course of a board meeting but seeing information here about her background gives me an idea, or rather re-awakens an old one.
One of WIkimedia-ZA's outreach options considered over the years and occasionally implemented by individual members, is the use of Kiwix offline WIkipedias. Given that prison inmates are denied internet access, but do sometimes have access to computers for rehabilitation-related training, how about arranging installation in those computers of Kiwix in all SA official languages - and perhaps other content available from Kiwix in .ZIM file format, like Khan academy or TED videos? For extra points, how about WikiFundi which allows them to create content?
Just flying a kite!

Good day all,
Today I'm excited to announce that WikimediaZA has granted the position of Executive Assistant to Shupai Muchuchu where among her role will be stakeholder and community engagement.
Shupai has a background in Dramatic Arts. She's done a lot of advocacy work to raise awareness on issues of juvenile delinquency and social rehabilitation through theatre workshops and dialogues in places such as Pollsmoore and Goodwood correctional services. She's also worked with a number of youth organisations supporting education in disadvantaged communities.
Kindly help me congratulate Shupai on her new role. We are looking forward to working with her.
Kind regards, Bobby Shabangu
WikimediaZA President.

Hello Michael,
I think it is a good idea. I remember us considering it a few years ago and being interested in it. Would you like to drive it? The hard part will be finding a prison which will be interested in letting us set it up but once that is done it is just a simple technology issue.
Regards,
Douglas.

Hello!
Michael this is a great idea! As far as I remember from Stephane's talks about Kiwix, are historically strong users of the resource. It is definitely worth looking into.
As Michael knows, the technology itself is easy to set up especially among concentrated populations - but it does require financial input with regards to the raspberry PIs that are required to 'deliver' the closed network. The software is obviously free, it's the tech and set up time that can be obstacles and then the will of the Department of Correctional Services, that need to be convinced - although with past projects they have seemed willing.
I am happy to chat about WikiFundi especially with whoever is interested in leading it in South Africa ?!
warmest Isla
