Hi everyone
I teach a postgraduate course in African social policy at Rhodes University. This year, I'm considering getting my students to create a wikipedia entry on an under-covered topic as part of their assessment.
Has anyone had any experience with this? I'd love to hear stories about how you've done this. Have so much to learn!
Warmly, Nimi
Hi Nimi,
You could take a look at the Wikipedia Education Program: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Education_program There you will find people who have run similar activities.
There's also a Facebook group: https://m.facebook.com/groups/1052002851481030?refid=27
Best of luck!!

One last quick question: does anyone know if there are any Wikipedia campus ambassadors in the Eastern Cape? Can't find anything online (they all seem to be located in WC and Gauteng).

Hi Nimi and Colleagues,
I have submitted a request to WikimediaZA to become the Wikipedia in residence at Rhodes. Please let me know if there is anything I can assist with to get more community members involved in this area. I have been talking (though initial stages) to Douglas Scott from WikimediaZA to look at the possibility of hosting a Wikipedia event at Rhodes. Would that be something that you would be interested in?

Hi Wynand
A Wikipedia event at Rhodes would be fantastic!
I think two kinds of events would be really useful:
1. A session for academics and postdocs on how to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool for undergrads & postgrads 2. A session for students on how to become Wiki editors
I'm pretty sure I could drum up a fair amount of interest in using Wikipedia as a teaching tool (for example, at the Centre for Postgraduate Studies). Which is to say, how can I help to make this happen? :)
Also, in the spirit of wishlists, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could get a small community of Wikipedia editors to facilitate the creation of excellent Wikipedia content a la the methodology of the Murder, Madness and Mayhem https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Murder_Madness_and_Mayhem&oldid=679170429 project? They had the help of the Features Article team, which is now a defunct Wikipedia project, but maybe we could put together a similar small project for Rhodes students? There are some really important local topics that Rhodes grad students are working on, such as ancestral veneration and the history of jazz in the Eastern Cape. They could write these articles in isiXhosa, Afrikaans, English etc.
Warmly, Nimi

Hi Sandister
This is wonderful. Thank you!
Would you be able to share the guide to getting started, and possibly the course outline?
Like your group, I also want to approach the Wiki part of the course in terms of writing an article + peer review. But I'm struggling with the chronology of the course. I'm thinking, for instance, it could run like this (for honours and masters students):
0. My own scoping exercise to see what topics are missing/under-developed on Wikipedia 1. Have a dedicated workshop on Wikipedia and editing + have short discussions about Wiki after each seminar 2. Ask them to choose an article to write or edit 3. Ask them to produce an annotated bibliography on the topic 4. Ask them to submit a wiki article outline 5. Ask them to submit a wiki draft article 6. Ask them to review two students' draft articles 7. Ask them to revise their own draft article after receiving peer feedback and submit the final version 8. Ask them to submit an outline of an academic essay on the same topic 9. Ask them to submit the essay 10. I review and send back 11. Ask them to revise and resubmit
I'm not expecting you to comment on the structure, but I just wanted you to see how much I might benefit from seeing your course outline/structure and experiences :)
Warmly, Nimi
