Dear Dumisani,
Thanks for introducing me to Tshegofatso.
Dear Tshego,
Great to be e-introduced to you. Indeed, you've come to the right person, we've been doing these kinds of projects for some time now. What's even more exciting is that with Covid-19 we can organise the edit-a-thon virtually so that more people can join in.
Please, should you need more clarity and to discuss further on resources needed to organise the event, possible dates, what the programme will look like and the next steps. You can do so via WhatsApp or phone. Otherwise I'm always available here on email.
Kind regards, Bobby Shabangu 072 067 9593

Hello hello Tshegofatso
Thank you for reaching out. I am copying Bobby Shabangu who is one of the directors of Wikimedia South Africa http://wikimedia.org.za/wiki/Main_Page which is the local chapter representing Wikipedians and volunteers in South Africa. Bobby is a long time friend and an excellent WIkipedian who has helped facilitate similar edit-athons before with organizations such as Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, Constitutional Court, Keleketla Library, UNISA and Multichoice's Talk Radio 702. I think this could easily grow into a feature supported by the local chapter going forward!
This is one of the demographic that is criminally underrepresented in content everywhere!
Ofcause, I would be very interested in participating in the planned edit-a-thon and I will compile available resources on how to organize and run an edit-a-thon.
Best wishes

Hi Tšhego,
Thank you for reaching out, what a great project!
I have copied my colleague, Dumisani Ndubane, who is far better suited to advise you on running an edit-a-thon than I.
@Dumisani Ndubane dndubane@wikimedia.org We can chat about how best to support this project in our umrhabulo tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Hello Khanyi,
I hope you are keeping well, sorry it took me so long to finally draft this – crazy times.
At the moment, I working at directing my research capacity to addressing research gaps in our collection and the contemporary South African visual arts discourse. With this I want to prioritise public access to research and creating greater public awareness of queer artist practicing at the moment as well as historical figures we have much to learn from.
I’ve done some light desktop research on Wikipedia edit-a-thons and have an interest in using them as one strategy towards tackling the big knowledge gaps relating to LGBTQIA+ artists. At the moment a Google search for black queer artists/ queer artists practicing in South Africa yields very few results and this is a similar challenge with black woman artists.
To commemorate Pride month in October I am interested in hosting a virtual edit-a-thon at the National Gallery that focuses on the creation of articles on black queer contemporary artists practicing in South Africa. I think it would be wonderful for this to be something that continues beyond pride month and also helps to nurture a community of writers and editors that continue this work.
In short, I would really appreciate any advice and information on how one goes about organising one, getting in touch with seasoned local Wikipedia editors and how we could partner with you guys to make this an impactful project.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Warmest,
